AirPrint lets you print from an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro to a compatible printer without installing additional printer drivers or software. To get started, confirm that your exact printer model supports AirPrint, connect the printer and device to the appropriate network, then choose the printer from a supported app’s print controls.
What AirPrint does—and what you need
AirPrint is Apple’s wireless printing technology for supported Apple devices. Apple lists features such as printer discovery, automatic media selection, and enterprise-class finishing, but available options vary by printer and job. Check the exact model in Apple’s AirPrint compatibility information; compatibility details are provided by manufacturers and updated regularly.

- An AirPrint-compatible printer. Support can differ between models from the same manufacturer.
- A network connection supported by the printer. For the standard iPhone and iPad workflow, Apple instructs users to put the device and printer on the same Wi-Fi network.
- An app that offers printing. Not every app includes a Print command.
AirPrint supports Wi-Fi or wired network connections. A printer plugged into the USB port of an AirPort Base Station or AirPort Time Capsule, or connected to a computer through Bluetooth, is not an AirPrint network printer.
Connect the printer to Wi-Fi
The setup method depends on the printer. Apple describes several common approaches, but these are not model-specific instructions; use the printer’s manual or manufacturer’s support for exact steps. See Apple’s overview of connecting an AirPrint printer to Wi-Fi.

- Printer control panel: Choose your Wi-Fi network on the printer’s display and enter its network details.
- Mac and USB: Temporarily connect the printer to a Mac by USB, then use the manufacturer’s setup assistant to configure its network connection.
- Printer-created network: Join the temporary Wi-Fi network created by the printer and complete setup in the manufacturer’s assistant.
- WPS: Use Wi-Fi Protected Setup if both the printer and network equipment support it.
After setup, connect the Apple device to the network required by the printer. If the printer or router uses separate network names or bands, confirm they allow devices to discover one another; being connected to Wi-Fi does not by itself guarantee that the printer will appear.
Print from an iPhone or iPad
- Open the document, photo, or other content in an app that supports printing.
- Open the app’s Share menu or Actions controls and choose Print. The option may appear farther down the share sheet. If it is missing, consult the app’s help or user guide.
- Tap No Printer Selected, then choose the AirPrint printer.
- Set the number of copies and any other options offered for that printer and content.
- Tap Print.
Apple’s full instructions are in Print from iPhone or iPad with AirPrint. To check progress or cancel a job, open Print Center while the job is active.

Print from a Mac
If the Mac and network printer are on the same Wi-Fi network, the printer may be available without further setup. To add or manage it, open Apple menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners, then add the printer from the available list. A network printer can take a short time—up to a minute or two—to appear.

macOS commonly uses AirPrint for compatible printers. If the printer does not support AirPrint, Apple directs users to the latest printer software from its manufacturer. Mac also supports other network printing protocols, though generic-protocol setups may provide fewer features. See Apple’s instructions for adding a printer on Mac.

When the printer does not appear or a job will not print
Work through the basic checks before changing printer settings. Apple’s Mac printer troubleshooting guidance recommends checking network and printer status, supplies, the queue, and whether another app can print.
- Check the connection: Confirm the printer is on and connected to the intended network. For iPhone or iPad printing, put the device and printer on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Check printer status: Look for alerts, paper jams, low ink or toner, and loose or incorrect cables. Clear any issue shown on the printer.
- Check the job and selected printer: Make sure the chosen printer is the one you intend to use. Inspect the print queue or, on iPhone and iPad, Print Center for a paused or blocked job.
- Try another app: If printing works elsewhere, consult the documentation for the app that failed.
- Check for updates: For an AirPrint-compatible model, look for printer updates from its manufacturer.
If a Mac still cannot add the printer, it may be off, connected to a different network, or unavailable because a Mac sharing it is asleep or has stopped sharing. If it does not appear in the list, adding it by IP address is another Mac option.

Reset the Mac printing system only as a last resort
Resetting removes printers, completed print jobs, and presets from the Mac. You will need to add printers again. Because this erases saved printer state, try the connection, status, queue, and alternate-app checks first.
Choosing a printer for AirPrint
If you are buying a printer, verify AirPrint support for the exact model rather than relying on a brand name or a general claim about a product line. Then check that its network connection and setup method suit your home or office, and confirm that it offers the print options you actually need. Apple describes automatic media selection and enterprise-class finishing as AirPrint capabilities, but those features should not be assumed for every printer. No model-specific price or independent reliability comparison is established here, so the compatibility check is the useful starting point—not a blanket model recommendation.
