Use an AI code reviewer as an extra pass over a focused diff or pull request—not as an automatic approval gate. Give it repository-specific context, ask for actionable findings, verify each claim against the code, and run your normal tests and security checks before merging. AI review can help surface defects, but it can also miss them or raise unsupported concerns.
How to run an AI review before a merge
- Give the review a defined scope. Start with a pull request or focused change rather than asking for a review of an unclear body of code. GitHub documents Copilot code review for pull requests. Amazon Q Developer’s IDE review can inspect the active file’s Git diff by default when asked to review code, and can also review a file or project. See GitHub’s overview of Copilot code review and AWS’s Amazon Q review documentation.
- Supply project context. State what the change is intended to do, relevant architecture constraints, conventions, edge cases, and how it should be tested. GitHub supports repository custom instructions and
AGENTS.mdfor Copilot reviews. Its documentation says those instructions are read from the pull request’s head branch, so scrutinize changes to the review instructions themselves. Details are in GitHub’s code review instructions. - Ask for specific, actionable findings. Describe the intended behavior and request concerns about correctness, edge cases, security, and regressions. Ask the reviewer to identify the affected code and explain why it may be wrong. This is a useful way to frame a review, not a tested prompt or a guarantee that the tool will catch a defect.
- Verify each finding. Check whether it applies to the actual code and intended behavior. Reproduce the issue or write a focused test when practical. Reject unsupported findings; when assessing a tool, record false positives as well as defects it misses.
- Run independent checks. Keep the project’s tests and relevant static-analysis, secrets, dependency, and security checks. AWS describes Amazon Q review categories that include SAST, secrets detection, infrastructure-as-code issues, deployment risks, and software composition analysis. AWS also says its reviewer filters unsupported languages, test code, and open-source code. Check the tool’s documented coverage against your repository rather than assuming every file is reviewed. See AWS’s review documentation.
- Keep human review and merge controls. A reviewer must decide whether a suggested change is correct in context. Published evaluations describe missed vulnerabilities and variable results, so an AI review should not replace ordinary code review or security controls.
- Evaluate it in your workflow. Track actionable findings, confirmed bugs, false positives, known issues it failed to identify, review time, and regressions introduced by fixes. Results from other repositories or benchmarks do not predict performance in your codebase.
What AI review can—and cannot—tell you
An AI reviewer can add another inspection pass, but a clean report does not establish that a change is bug-free. A 2025 preprint evaluating Copilot against deliberately insecure and known-vulnerability datasets reported examples in which the tool reviewed files but produced no vulnerability-relevant comments. That finding is limited to the preprint’s datasets and tested product version; it is a reason to retain security checks, not a measure of how every current review will perform. See the preprint.

Published results also measure different things in different settings. The authors of the 2024 preprint Automated Code Review In Practice reported that 73.8% of automated comments were resolved. In the observed setting, average pull-request closure duration rose from 5 hours 52 minutes to 8 hours 20 minutes; trends varied by project, and practitioners generally described minor code-quality improvement. These results do not show that automated review universally speeds delivery or improves quality. See the study.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSignal65’s March 2026 evaluation tested five tools against historical bugs in six open-source repositories. It reported precision of 95.88% for CodeRabbit and 64.35% for GitHub Copilot in that benchmark. Those figures describe that evaluation and setup; they should not be generalized to other languages, repositories, product versions, or routine reviews. See Signal65’s report. The studies use different measures and settings, so their numbers are not directly comparable.

How the review workflows differ
| Option | Documented workflow | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot code review | GitHub describes reviews of pull requests that identify issues and suggest fixes. Repository instructions can provide project context. GitHub documentation | Availability is tied to paid Copilot plans; organizational policy and AI-credit details can matter. Check current plan terms and organization settings. GitHub usage documentation |
| Amazon Q Developer | AWS documents IDE reviews of changes, files, or projects, with code-quality and security categories. Its GitHub integration can automatically review newly created or reopened pull requests and add threaded findings with suggested fixes. IDE review; GitHub review | AWS says later commits do not automatically trigger another review; use /q review to request one. AWS marked the GitHub feature as preview in the documentation surfaced for this article, so confirm its current status before relying on it. |
| CodeRabbit | OpenAI’s account describes CodeRabbit adding context from code history, linters, code-graph analysis, issue tickets, and developer conversations before multi-model analysis. OpenAI’s case study | This is a vendor-facing account of the system, not independent evidence of bug-detection performance. Evaluate it on your own code and process. |
Features, availability, organizational controls, and usage terms can change. Consult the linked product documentation and your organization’s settings when selecting or configuring a tool. These sources do not establish a complete current comparison of prices or data-handling terms.

Run the candidate in a limited part of your workflow and compare its findings with issues your team confirms. A tool’s benchmark score is useful context, not a substitute for that local evaluation.
