AI can help produce a Christmas ad, but it cannot decide what makes the story matter. Start with a human insight—a reunion, a familiar ritual, an act of generosity—then give AI a clearly bounded production role. Keep people accountable for the story, emotional judgment, brand choices, and final review.
Can AI make a Christmas advert feel emotional?
It can contribute to an emotional advert, but using AI does not itself create emotional meaning. That comes from the audience insight, the relationships on screen, and choices about performance, pacing, sound, and what the brand wants to say. A polished synthetic scene can still feel empty if those choices are not convincing.

There is no sufficiently transparent, representative evidence establishing how audiences broadly respond to AI-generated Christmas advertising. Do not treat online reactions or a vendor’s sentiment score as proof of general preference, or promise a performance lift without testing the actual creative with its intended audience.

Write the human story before generating images or video. Identify the seasonal moment and why it matters to the people in it; only then choose where AI might support production.

Useful bounded roles
- Explore visual directions: Generate options for a setting, palette, or composition after the creative team has defined the scene’s purpose.
- Create or adapt imagery: Use generated visuals as production material, with people checking whether details, characters, and movement remain coherent.
- Support a digital experience: Consider interactive or personalized elements when they serve the story rather than functioning as novelty alone.
These are possible roles, not a guarantee that a particular tool or workflow will suit a brand. Coca-Cola’s own October 2024 account described AI and other digital tools in holiday films and a digital experience. Pratik Thakar, the company’s Global Head of Generative AI, said: “Until now, we have only presented the 1931 Sundblom Santa in static images, not dynamically,” in the campaign announcement. The brand’s description establishes what it said it made, not whether the campaign was effective.
In its 2025 holiday campaign description, Coca-Cola said it used AI-powered storytelling to celebrate people working behind the scenes and framed human creativity as central. That account illustrates one brand’s stated approach; it is not a controlled comparison of AI and non-AI production.

How should a team review AI-assisted creative?
Assign named people to make and approve the decisions that determine what the ad means. Review the complete piece—not just attractive stills or technically clean clips—against the story and audience it is intended for.
- Emotional fit: Does the scene communicate the intended seasonal feeling, or is the feeling merely asserted by the copy?
- Character and continuity: Do faces, clothing, props, movement, and spatial relationships stay believable from shot to shot?
- Pacing and legibility: Can viewers follow what happens, and does the edit give the important moment enough room?
- Sound: Do voice, music, and effects fit the same world as the images? Review them as part of the story, not as a finishing layer.
- Brand fit: Is the work consistent with the brand’s voice, history, and audience expectations?
- Human control: Who made the story, casting, edit, and release decisions—and who is accountable for them?
How should you compare creative approaches?
When several production approaches could tell the same story, compare the actual proposed work rather than ranking methods in the abstract. These criteria are a practical decision aid, not a proven scoring formula.

| Decision axis | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Story and emotional fit | Does this approach help the intended audience feel the seasonal moment? |
| Visibility of AI | Is AI only a behind-the-scenes aid, or is synthetic content prominent in the finished ad? |
| Visual and audio coherence | Do characters, objects, movement, voices, and music remain consistent and believable? |
| Brand fit | Does the finished work feel consistent with the brand’s voice, history, and audience expectations? |
| Human control | Who is responsible for the story, casting, edit, and final release? |
| Transparency | Could marking, labeling, or disclosure rules apply to this content in the markets where it will appear? |
| Evidence | Has the intended audience seen and evaluated the actual creative, rather than being asked about AI in general? |
If the decision is consequential, test the finished creative with the intended audience. Treat the result as evidence about that audience and that work—not as a universal verdict on AI in holiday advertising.
Do AI-generated Christmas ads need to be labelled?
In the European Union, Article 50 of the AI Act applies from 2 August 2026. Its transparency provisions distinguish among providers, deployers, and content types. In general, providers of systems that generate synthetic audio, image, video, or text must ensure outputs are marked in a machine-readable way and detectable as generated or manipulated, subject to the regulation’s provisions and exceptions. Deployers must disclose certain deepfake image, audio, or video content.
Rank #4
For AI-generated or manipulated text published to inform the public on matters of public interest, the provision includes an exception where the text has been subject to human review or editorial control and a person holds editorial responsibility. For artistic, creative, satirical, fictional, or analogous works, the regulation limits the manner of disclosure so it does not hamper the work’s display or enjoyment. The rules depend on the content and circumstances; a Christmas ad should not be assumed automatically exempt or automatically subject to one identical label.
The European Commission’s Article 50 text and summary, its transparency guidance and code of practice (the code page was updated 31 July 2026), and its FAQ on transparency obligations provide further detail. The Commission FAQ says the legal person under whose authority a system is used—for example, an advertising company—is the deployer; employees acting under that organization’s instructions are not separate deployers. The FAQ also discusses editorial responsibility for the public-interest text exception.

For each campaign, establish who is using the system and under whose authority, what kind of content is generated or manipulated, where it will be distributed, and whether an exception applies. Check current Commission guidance, applicable national requirements, and platform rules before release; these points do not determine the legal treatment of a particular advertisement.
