Use AI to turn a clearly defined user journey into a test draft, then review and run that test with a browser automation framework such as Playwright. AI can help plan scenarios, generate code, and interact with a browser; it cannot determine by itself whether a test reflects the right user outcome. Keep assertions reviewable, run the journeys in the browsers your users rely on, and use execution evidence to diagnose failures.
What AI can—and cannot—do in website testing
AI is most useful as an assistant around a repeatable test process. It can help convert a description of a task into candidate scenarios, draft browser automation, and help operate browser tools. A test runner then executes the reviewed steps consistently.

- Good uses: brainstorming edge cases, drafting test steps, generating a first version of browser code, and helping investigate a failure.
- Human responsibilities: deciding what successful behavior means, checking generated locators and assertions, selecting meaningful browser coverage, and determining whether a failure is a product defect or a test/environment problem.
Playwright documents test generation and agent workflows, but generated tests still need review against the intended behavior (test generation; release notes).
Build a reliable AI-assisted testing workflow
1. Choose one important user journey
Start with a task users actually need to complete, such as creating an account, searching a catalog, submitting a form, or checking out. Write down the expected outcome before asking AI to generate steps. For example: “A valid user can submit the sign-up form and sees the account confirmation page.” This gives you a criterion for reviewing the proposed test rather than accepting plausible-looking code.

2. Generate a draft with Playwright
Playwright’s code generator opens a browser and inspector while you perform interactions. It produces test code and recommends locators based on page content, favoring user-facing choices such as roles, text, and test IDs. Install Playwright and its browsers in your project, then start codegen with your target page:
npx playwright codegen https://example.com
Replace the URL with a page in your application. Perform the journey in the opened browser and review the generated code in the inspector. Codegen is a starting point: add assertions that check the outcome you defined, remove incidental clicks, and confirm that every locator targets the intended control. See the Playwright code generation guide for setup details and options.

3. Prefer semantic locators and meaningful assertions
Use locators that describe how a person or assistive technology identifies an element, where possible: getByRole, getByLabel, getByPlaceholder, and getByTestId. Avoid relying on long CSS paths tied to incidental page structure unless there is no more stable target.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor example, a reviewed test can express both an action and its expected result:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('visitor can submit the contact form', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/contact');
await page.getByLabel('Email').fill('[email protected]');
await page.getByLabel('Message').fill('Please contact me.');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Send' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('status')).toContainText('Thank you');
});
Adapt labels and expected text to the real application. Playwright’s runner auto-waits for actionability and retries assertions, which helps with common timing variation; it does not establish that the assertion tests the correct requirement (Playwright).
4. Run coverage for the browsers and devices that matter
Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, along with branded browsers and emulated devices. Choose a matrix based on your audience and the risks of the journey rather than assuming every test needs every configuration. Keep Playwright and its browser versions current so your tests exercise recent browser behavior. Consult Playwright browser documentation for supported browser options.

5. Use traces to understand failures
When a test fails, inspect its trace instead of asking AI to “fix” it without evidence. Playwright trace artifacts can include an execution timeline, DOM snapshots, network requests, console logs, and screenshots. Use these to determine whether the application behaved incorrectly, the test encoded the wrong expectation, or the environment disrupted execution. Treat any suggested repair as a proposal and verify it against the user journey.
6. Add accessibility checks, then assess manually
Playwright documents integration with @axe-core/playwright to run axe-core checks. Automated scans can identify some detectable issues, including low contrast, unlabeled controls, and duplicate IDs. They do not establish that a site is accessible: many issues require manual testing, and Playwright recommends combining automated checks with manual assessment and inclusive user testing (Accessibility testing).
Keep AI-generated tests maintainable
- Review intent, not just syntax. A test can execute successfully while checking the wrong outcome. Make each assertion map to a user-visible requirement.
- Keep journeys focused. Separate unrelated outcomes so one failure does not obscure which behavior broke.
- Prefer isolated tests. Avoid depending on state left behind by another test; isolation makes failures easier to reproduce.
- Use reliable setup data. Keep test accounts and fixtures deliberate, and avoid relying on production customer data.
- Check generated changes. If an AI agent proposes a “healing” change after a failure, confirm the underlying requirement and locator before adopting it.
- Preserve evidence. Save and inspect traces for failures so debugging uses the actual browser run rather than a guessed explanation.
Choose a testing approach that fits the risk
For critical workflows, use scripted, repeatable tests with explicit expected outcomes. AI-assisted exploration can suggest additional paths and edge cases, but exploratory findings should be turned into reviewed tests if they need to run reliably in CI. When evaluating a setup, consider browser and device coverage, how inspectable generated tests are, failure evidence, accessibility limits, and compatibility with the team’s existing runner and CI. The documented Playwright capabilities above do not constitute an independent comparison of all testing products.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a website screenshot as visual evidence rather than an interactive end-to-end test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not replace Playwright assertions or browser interaction tests; it can capture a page directly through one request.
cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
