You can use an AI chatbot to prompt reflection or organize your thoughts, but a hosted chatbot is not the same as a confidential diary. Turning off model training does not necessarily delete a chat, prevent safety review, or stop information from being sent to a connected service. The safest approach is to share only the minimum detail needed—and keep anything that must remain confidential out of hosted chatbots.
Use the chatbot for reflection, not as a vault
Ask for help examining a decision, naming possible feelings, or finding a journaling prompt. You usually do not need to provide a full personal history for those tasks. Treat every setting as a limit on a particular use of your data, not as a blanket promise of secrecy.

OpenAI’s Help Center gives a direct caution: “Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used.” OpenAI explains how data is used to improve model performance.
Write a useful prompt with fewer identifying details
- Start with the task. Ask for a reflection structure, a few questions to consider, or help weighing a decision rather than pasting a detailed account.
- Use roles instead of names. Write “my manager,” “a relative,” or “a friend” instead of names, employer names, or client names.
- Generalize specifics. Replace exact dates and addresses with broad timeframes and settings. Remove account numbers, passwords, identifying documents, and details that could identify someone through a unique combination.
- Include only what changes the answer. If a detail is not needed to get useful reflection, leave it out. For example, “I’m deciding whether to raise a recurring workload issue with someone at work” may be enough to ask for questions that clarify your goals.
- Check the controls before you type. Review the service’s settings for training, history or activity, memory and personalization, temporary or incognito chats, feedback, and connected tools or actions.
Anthropic specifically advises care with highly sensitive details, including financial information, health information, passwords, and confidential documents. Its Help Center says: “While we have these protections in place, we also recommend being thoughtful about sharing highly sensitive personal details such as:” Anthropic’s guidance on sensitive data and Claude conversations.

What the main consumer chatbots’ controls do
Provider controls change, and account options may vary. The details below describe consumer products as checked on October 4, 2026. They distinguish training, retention, personalization, review, and sharing because those are separate questions.

Understand the limits of the privacy controls
Training is not the same as storage or deletion
A setting that prevents a chat from being used to improve models does not necessarily remove it from history or prevent temporary retention. Check the service’s separate history, activity, and deletion rules rather than treating an opt-out as a delete command.

Temporary modes can still have exceptions
Temporary or incognito modes can limit history or model-improvement use, but services may retain content for safety or process it for trust and safety. Personalization can also draw on information already saved, and a connected action can pass information to another company. Read what the particular mode excludes and what it does not.

Feedback and connected tools create separate paths
Submitting a rating or written feedback on a sensitive exchange may let the provider use the associated conversation for improvement. Likewise, a chatbot action or connected app can send content beyond the chatbot provider. Avoid feedback on a sensitive chat unless you have checked the provider’s stated consequences, and do not connect or invoke tools for journaling unless you understand where the information goes.

Take extra care with work, school, and managed accounts
OpenAI says inputs and outputs in Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API offerings are not used to improve models by default. That does not establish that every organization has the same retention or access arrangements: an organization may control workspace settings, retention, and access. If the material must remain confidential—such as a password, financial account detail, health record, identifying document, or confidential personal or business document—do not put it in a hosted chatbot for journaling. Use an offline alternative, such as a paper journal, for private writing. That alternative does not change how a chatbot handles anything you have already entered.
