How to Use Abstract Screenshot API with Node.js and fetch

A practical Node.js example for requesting an Abstract Screenshot API capture with fetch and saving the binary response safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Node.js’s built-in fetch to send a GET request to Abstract’s Screenshot API, then read the response with arrayBuffer() and save those bytes. The example below is an adaptation of Abstract’s documented endpoint and GET-based file-saving approach; it has not been independently tested. Keep your API key on the server, and check Abstract’s current documentation for output-format and option details before relying on them.

Call Abstract’s Screenshot API from Node.js

Abstract documents the endpoint https://screenshot.abstractapi.com/v1/ with api_key and url query parameters. Its Screenshot API accepts a page URL or raw HTML and can return image formats including JPEG, PNG, and GIF. This minimal example requests a screenshot of a page URL and saves the response bytes to a file.

import { writeFile } from 'node:fs/promises';

const apiKey = process.env.ABSTRACT_API_KEY;
const pageUrl = 'https://example.com';

if (!apiKey) throw new Error('Set ABSTRACT_API_KEY in the environment');

const endpoint = new URL('https://screenshot.abstractapi.com/v1/');
endpoint.search = new URLSearchParams({
  api_key: apiKey,
  url: pageUrl,
}).toString();

const response = await fetch(endpoint);
if (!response.ok) {
  throw new Error(`Screenshot API returned HTTP ${response.status}`);
}

const image = Buffer.from(await response.arrayBuffer());
await writeFile('screenshot.png', image);

This uses ES modules and Node’s global fetch; use a current Node release that provides global fetch, or configure a fetch implementation if your runtime does not. Set the key before running:

The filename in this example is screenshot.png, but the reviewed API material does not establish that every response is PNG regardless of settings. Confirm the selected format and use a matching extension or content-type handling in your application.

Why the response must be handled as bytes

An image response is binary data, not JSON. Calling response.json() attempts to parse image bytes as text and will fail or produce unusable output. response.arrayBuffer() reads the response body as bytes; converting it to a Node Buffer lets writeFile persist the image without text encoding changes.

For an HTTP error, the sample reports the status code rather than assuming a particular error-body format. The reviewed documentation does not establish all error response details, so consult the live API documentation if your application needs to interpret error bodies or distinguish quota, authentication, and input errors.

Keep the API key and request handling safe

  • Store ABSTRACT_API_KEY in server-side environment configuration or a secrets manager; do not put it in browser JavaScript or commit it to source control.
  • Because the documented request puts api_key in the query string, avoid logging the full URL. Query strings can be captured by application logs, proxies, or monitoring systems.
  • Use only page URLs your application is authorized to capture, and validate any user-supplied URL before sending it to a screenshot service.
  • Add an application-level timeout and retry policy appropriate to your workload. The reviewed material does not specify a universal timeout or retry behavior, so avoid treating any particular value as an Abstract guarantee.

Capture options, rate limits, and cost

Abstract lists viewport or dimensions, image formats, custom CSS, capture delay or timing, and device settings among its customization areas. Check the current API documentation for exact parameter names, valid values, and which options are available to your account before adding them to the query. The API page also describes use cases such as device QA, recurring snapshots, embedded previews, monitoring placements, and security preview flows.

On Abstract’s 2026 product page, the free plan is listed at $0 with 100 requests and a limit of 1 request per second. The same page’s monthly-billing view lists Standard at $99 per month with 60,000 requests per month and 3 requests per second; its yearly-billing view lists Standard at $99 per month paid annually, with 60,000 requests per year and 3 requests per second. Because those figures differ by billing view, check the current plan page and selected billing cadence before estimating capacity or cost. The page lists Enterprise as custom and states that it includes a 99.99% uptime SLA; that is a vendor-published plan statement, not an independently verified performance measurement.

Common problems and fixes

Missing-key error before the request

If the script throws Set ABSTRACT_API_KEY in the environment, the environment variable is unset or empty. Set it in the shell or your deployment’s secret configuration, then rerun the script. Do not replace the environment variable with a key committed in the file.

HTTP response is not successful

The code throws when response.ok is false, which means the response status is outside the successful HTTP range. Log the status code and consult Abstract’s current documentation for the corresponding error details. Do not assume a particular error JSON schema based on this example.

Saved file will not open as an image

Check that the API request succeeded, that the response body was saved using arrayBuffer() rather than parsed as JSON or converted to text, and that the filename extension matches the format requested or returned. The sample’s .png extension is illustrative, not proof of the response format in every configuration.

Requests are slower or more frequent than the plan allows

Compare your request rate and expected monthly or yearly volume with the limits for the billing view and plan you actually selected. The listed limits are plan-specific vendor figures and may change; they are not a guarantee that every capture completes within a particular duration.
