To stream a prerecorded church service as a scheduled YouTube Live event, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and stream key into an encoder, start sending the prepared video, check YouTube’s preview, and click Go live in Live Control Room. The key connects the encoder to YouTube; it does not contain the service video or start the event by itself.
Before service day: check channel eligibility
YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it well before the first service rather than waiting until broadcast day. Schedule a YouTube Live event for the service
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Manage → Schedule stream.
- Create a new stream, or choose Reuse settings if an established recurring format is appropriate.
- Set the event’s date and time, title, description, and privacy. Review each field even when reusing settings; copied details may not be right for this week’s service.
- Save the event and check its watch page. A scheduled stream gives you a link to share, and viewers may be able to opt into reminders.
Scheduling creates the event and its watch page; it does not start the encoder or take the event live. YouTube says reuse settings can carry over the stream key and other settings, but the event’s schedule and metadata still need review. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
Choose how to play the recording into YouTube
The prerecorded service must be played into an encoder that sends a live feed to YouTube. The encoder can be software running on a computer or a standalone hardware device. YouTube’s general setup guidance does not prescribe a church-specific app or hardware model, and dedicated hardware is optional.

Either approach needs the event’s stream URL and key. The encoder or production system—not the key alone—determines how the recording is played and whether weekly operation is automated.
Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder
- Open the scheduled event’s stream settings in Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- In the encoder, paste the URL into its server or URL field and the key into its stream-key field. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- Load the prepared service in the encoder’s playback or production workflow. Confirm that it is the correct recording before you start sending.
- Store the key only where authorized operators need it. Do not put it in a public document, email list, or visible screen capture.
YouTube describes the credentials this way: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a password: it connects an encoder to the right stream, and anyone with access may be able to send a feed using it. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it from the Stream tab in Live Control Room. Replace the old value everywhere it was stored in the encoder or production workflow. Test, start the feed, and take the event live
- Test in advance. Send a test feed before service day when possible. Verify that the event opens from the channel and watch page, including on a phone, and that the intended audience can access it.
- Start the encoder before the scheduled start. Begin sending the recording to YouTube and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Verify the right event and program. Check picture and listen to the audio in the preview. Confirm that the selected event, recording, and privacy are correct.
- Click Go live in Live Control Room. For a scheduled encoder stream, sending the feed is not the same as making the event live; wait for preview, then take the event live there.
- Monitor throughout the service. Keep an operator checking the audio and video rather than assuming a successful preview guarantees an uninterrupted event.

A prerecorded service sent as a live stream is still subject to YouTube’s content checks. YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can interrupt or terminate the live stream, and an archived stream may receive a claim afterward. Music, video clips, and other included material should be cleared for this specific use.

A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. YouTube says to ask the rights holder to allowlist the channel through Content ID when licensed material is interrupted. Confirm the permissions and platform procedures for the actual repertoire and territories; this is not legal advice about a church’s particular license. End the event and check the replay
- When the service is over, end the stream in Live Control Room.
- Stop the encoder so it is no longer sending the feed.
- Check the resulting archive and any rights notices before sharing the replay.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That is YouTube’s current guidance accessed in 2026, not a guarantee that every stream will archive successfully. See the encoder instructions.

What can be reused for the next week?
For an established recurring format, Reuse settings can carry over the stream key and other settings. Treat this as a starting point, not an unattended weekly schedule: verify the new event’s date and time, title, description, privacy, and recording, then confirm the encoder is configured for that event. Automatic weekly playback depends on the encoder or production system and the event configuration; having a reusable key alone does not automate it.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. If enabling live streaming for the first time, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no feed: Confirm that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key for the scheduled event, then verify that the encoder is actually sending the prepared program.
- The preview is missing or shows the wrong content: Check the selected event and encoder playback source. Start sending the feed and wait for the correct incoming preview before clicking Go live.
- The event is live but viewers cannot access it: Recheck the event’s privacy and watch-page availability, then test the link from the channel and a mobile device.
- The key may have been exposed: Have a channel owner or manager reset it in the Stream tab in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder and any other authorized storage locations.
- The stream is interrupted over music or a clip: Review the rights for the material and territories involved. If the use is licensed, contact the rights holder about allowlisting the channel through Content ID; a license alone may not prevent an automated interruption.
