A YouTube stream key lets an encoder send a live feed to your channel; it does not play or schedule a playlist. To run a playlist continuously, keep the playlist and encoder running on your server, then connect the encoder to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before leaving it unattended.
What the stream key does—and what it does not do
YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” In practice, the key is a credential the encoder uses to send video to YouTube. The server’s playlist supplies the media, and the encoder turns that media into the outgoing feed. The key is not the playlist, the server software, or the public watch-page URL.

YouTube’s instruction is to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube Studio provides those connection details and shows whether it is receiving the feed; your chosen server software controls how the playlist advances and how the encoder runs. Check channel eligibility first
Before configuring the server, confirm the channel can live stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Initial live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, and YouTube’s getting-started guidance sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Set up the YouTube stream
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or open one you have scheduled.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Your encoder needs both in their corresponding fields. A custom key can be useful when you want to reuse stream settings. Do not share the key or put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log.
- Choose the endpoint your encoder supports. YouTube may display an ordinary RTMP URL by default. If your encoder supports encrypted transport, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room rather than assuming the default endpoint is secure. - Enter the URL and key in your server encoder. Use the fields and configuration instructions for the specific encoder and version you have installed. The exact playlist scheduler, restart policy, and encoder settings depend on that software; YouTube does not provide a universal server-playlist command or operating-system recipe.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed and that picture and sound are correct. If you are using a scheduled stream, follow the on-screen Go live step after the preview appears. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover this Studio-to-encoder connection: Manage live stream settings.
Make the playlist safe to leave running
A successful preview proves the encoder is reaching YouTube at that moment; it does not prove the whole unattended workflow will survive a playlist transition, encoder restart, network interruption, or long session. Before relying on it, test the complete sequence under the conditions you expect to use.
- Watch the playlist advance through multiple items and confirm that audio and video continue across transitions.
- Restart the encoder and verify that it resumes sending the intended feed. If a backup or failover encoder is configured, test the handoff rather than assuming it works.
- Test recovery after an interruption that is representative of your deployment, and monitor the Live Control Room preview for quality issues.
- If an independent recording matters, configure it on the server and confirm that the file is actually being written and can be opened. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not establish that a longer continuous broadcast will be archived in full.
- Check that the event opens from your channel and watch page, including on mobile, before leaving it unattended.

Protect or replace an exposed stream key
Treat the key like a password. If it appears in a public script, log, or screenshot, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the server encoder. A reset key will not help if the encoder continues trying to use the exposed one; verify the new key by checking for a fresh incoming preview.
RTMP and RTMPS: choose the matching URL
RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use the RTMPS URL only when the encoder is configured for that protocol. For the SSL error case documented by YouTube, check that both the selected protocol and server are RTMPS; YouTube also says port 443 can be specified. Do not solve a protocol mismatch by guessing at an endpoint—copy the current URL from Live Control Room and check the encoder’s instructions for that version. What depends on your server software
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, but it does not define a universal way to create a server playlist, keep it advancing, or restart a particular encoder. Those details depend on the software and version you choose. Use that product’s current documentation for playlist input, loop behavior, reconnect options, and whether it can record locally while streaming; then verify the YouTube ingest settings separately.
YouTube’s encoder page lists a CamStreamer app as supporting “24/7 continuous streams.” That description applies to the listed product, not a general guarantee that every encoder, playlist, or server configuration will run continuously. Troubleshoot common problems
