To air prerecorded video continuously, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, enter both its stream URL and key in an encoder or streaming service that supports looping, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube’s encoder instructions say first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so prepare and test well before you plan to go live.
What a YouTube stream key does—and what it does not do
The key authenticates the encoder that sends video to YouTube. The encoder also needs the stream URL, and it must keep sending the program as a live feed. Looping a playlist, reconnecting after an interruption, and running unattended are capabilities of the encoder or service, not of the key. YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s password and address; treat yours as a secret credential. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

Before you set up the broadcast
Confirm that the channel can go live
Check the channel’s live-streaming eligibility and restrictions before building the broadcast. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours; minimum-age rules also apply under its current policy. Verify the account early rather than waiting until the day the stream is meant to start. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming

Use an encoder or streaming service that can loop a playlist and recover from interruptions if you need continuous operation. Options include software on a computer you maintain, standalone encoder hardware, or a cloud service. YouTube supports software and hardware encoder workflows and lists Gyre as a cloud-based prerecorded-stream option; its listing does not make that option mandatory or establish YouTube endorsement. Prepare the video, audio, and rights
- Make sure your chosen encoder can repeat the videos or playlist in the intended order and can resume after a computer, power, or network interruption.
- Use content you have permission to broadcast. A stream key does not grant rights to music, video, or other material in the feed; review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies before airing a library continuously.
- If the broadcast’s full archive matters, plan recording or segmentation separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be archived in full.
Create a stream and connect the key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Select Create, then Go live. Use the Stream tab to create a stream or select an existing one. If you want a promoted watch page and a scheduled start, schedule the stream first. See YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. You need both. In your encoder, paste the URL into the server, RTMP, or ingest-address field, and paste the key into the stream-key field. Some encoders offer a direct YouTube connection or preset; follow that encoder’s interface while ensuring the correct stream is selected in Studio.
- Configure the encoder for a continuous feed. Select the prerecorded video or looping playlist, enable looping if available, and configure restart or reconnection behavior. The exact controls depend on the encoder or service; the YouTube key alone cannot perform these tasks.
- Set the video and audio output. For common RTMP/RTMPS workflows, YouTube lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your encoder supports and your upload connection can sustain reliably. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the target format.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Confirm that video and audio appear in Live Control Room and check stream health before relying on the broadcast. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder instructions say to click Go live after the preview appears. The preview is a useful final check that the encoder is sending to the intended stream.
Protect the key and plan for long runtimes
Keep the key private
Do not expose the key in screenshots, public documents, chat, or a shared encoder configuration. Limit access to people and systems that need it. YouTube allows creators to create custom keys for reuse, and some reuse settings may also copy a key. If you believe the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in the encoder before restarting the feed. Manage live stream settings
Do not assume a 24-hour archive will be complete
YouTube’s stated automatic archive coverage is for streams under 12 hours. It does not confirm that a single 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full. If you need a complete record, arrange separate recording or split the broadcast into segments, and verify the current behavior of both YouTube and your encoder or service. Choose an operating setup that fits your needs

For any setup, compare looping and recovery, preview and alerts, resolution and bitrate options, secure key storage, and how you will record or segment broadcasts longer than 12 hours. Troubleshooting common setup problems
You cannot start a live stream
Check channel eligibility and restrictions, and whether first-time activation is still pending. YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours, so allow for that delay. Review YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance.
YouTube does not receive a signal
Confirm that the encoder has both the correct stream URL and key, that it is sending to the intended stream, and that its output has started. Then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. For general encoder troubleshooting, see YouTube’s streaming tips.

The stream starts but stops when the video ends or the connection drops
Check that playlist looping is enabled and that the encoder or service is configured to reconnect or restart. A stream key cannot perform those functions. For a computer-based encoder, also check that the computer, power, and internet remain available.
The preview appears, but the scheduled broadcast is not live
After the preview appears, use Go live in Live Control Room for a scheduled stream, as directed in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Review the encoder workflow.

The key may have been shared or exposed
Reset the key in Live Control Room, update the encoder with the replacement, and keep the new value out of public or shared materials. YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.
The archive does not cover the full broadcast
Do not assume a single 24-hour run will be fully archived: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive coverage is for streams under 12 hours. Use your own recording or segment the broadcast if a complete archive is necessary.
