Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can connect a wireless keyboard through a monitor only if the monitor has a USB hub connected to your computer. Plug the keyboard’s USB receiver into a downstream USB port on the monitor, then connect the monitor’s upstream USB port to the computer with the data cable specified for that monitor. For a Bluetooth keyboard, pair it with the computer instead; the monitor usually does not host the Bluetooth connection.
First, identify how the keyboard connects
Wireless keyboards generally use either a small USB receiver or Bluetooth. The setup differs:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- USB receiver: The receiver plugs into a USB port. You can use a monitor’s USB hub if that hub has an upstream data connection to the computer.
- Bluetooth: Pair the keyboard directly with the computer using the computer’s Bluetooth settings and the keyboard’s pairing instructions. This route does not use the monitor’s USB ports. Logitech describes Bluetooth pairing as a direct-to-computer connection that does not require a USB port: Logitech.
A monitor is normally a pass-through USB hub, not a separate computer that independently connects to the keyboard.

Connect a receiver-based keyboard through the monitor
- Check the monitor manual or specifications. Confirm that it has a USB hub, find a downstream USB port for devices, and identify the upstream USB port that connects to the computer. Port types and required cables vary by model. LG notes that a monitor’s downstream USB port can connect a keyboard or mouse, while the hub requires a USB connection to the PC: LG support.
- Connect the monitor’s upstream USB port to the computer. Use the cable and ports specified for your monitor. Depending on the model, the upstream connection may use USB-C or USB-B. A video connection such as HDMI or DisplayPort alone does not activate the monitor’s USB hub. BenQ explains the upstream options and model-specific USB hub connections in its monitor USB connection guidance.
- Insert the keyboard receiver into a downstream USB port on the monitor. Turn on the keyboard and follow its setup instructions if required. The receiver’s signal reaches the computer through the monitor’s upstream USB data connection.
Connect a Bluetooth keyboard
Put the keyboard into pairing mode, then select it from the computer’s Bluetooth settings. Follow the keyboard and computer manuals for their specific pairing steps. Connecting the monitor to the computer with USB does not make the monitor a Bluetooth host.

If you want to switch the keyboard between computers
Some monitors include a KVM feature that lets them share connected peripherals between computers. Check the guide for your exact monitor to see which upstream connections and switching steps it requires. Dell’s instructions for supported KVM monitors allow a wireless USB receiver in a downstream port and require upstream connections to the computers; the described Dell workflow does not support Bluetooth keyboards: Dell KVM guidance. This behavior is specific to supported models, not a general rule for every monitor KVM.

Troubleshoot a keyboard that does not work
- Check the port: Make sure the receiver is in a downstream USB data port, not a port that only supplies power for charging.
- Check the upstream link: Confirm that the monitor is connected to the computer by the required USB data cable. A working HDMI or DisplayPort video connection does not necessarily connect the USB hub.
- Verify the exact cable and ports: Consult the monitor’s manual; USB-C, USB-B, and other port arrangements differ among models.
- Check USB-C capabilities: If USB-C carries video, verify whether that same connection also carries USB hub data on your monitor. Some models support both; others require a separate USB connection for the hub.
- Isolate the receiver: Try the receiver in a USB port on the computer. If it works there but not through the monitor, check the monitor hub connection and downstream port. This is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
- For Bluetooth, troubleshoot pairing on the computer: Make sure Bluetooth is enabled and follow the keyboard’s pairing instructions; the monitor’s USB hub is not part of that connection.
