To live stream with a webcam on YouTube, sign in on a supported browser, open Create → Go Live → Webcam, enter your stream details, choose your camera and microphone, check the preview, and start the broadcast. You need an eligible YouTube channel, a working webcam and microphone, and a reliable upload connection.

Before you start: check channel eligibility and equipment

YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements say your channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling an event; platform requirements can change.

YouTube’s webcam workflow uses a computer and webcam. A built-in laptop camera is enough to begin if its image meets your needs. You can use an external USB webcam if your computer has no camera or you want a different image, but buying one is not a requirement. Check that your microphone works too: clear sound often matters more to viewers than a sharper picture.

YouTube lists Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ for its webcam workflow in its webcam instructions. Browser support may change, so if the camera setup does not appear, update your browser or try a currently supported browser.

Start a direct webcam stream

  1. Sign in and open the webcam flow. On YouTube, select Create → Go Live, then choose Webcam.
  2. Enter the broadcast details. Add a title and description, choose the privacy setting, and set scheduling or advanced options if you need them. Confirm the audience and visibility choices before going live.
  3. Choose your devices. At the camera preview step, select the webcam and microphone you intend to use. If prompted by the browser, allow YouTube to access them.
  4. Check your shot and sound. Confirm that your face or subject is in frame, lighting is usable, and the selected microphone captures your voice clearly. Listen with headphones if possible to catch echo or background noise.
  5. Start the broadcast. When the preview and stream details are ready, start the live stream. Keep YouTube’s stream health and the audio and video in view while you are live.

YouTube describes this as a way to go live from a computer without live-streaming encoder software. That makes it a straightforward choice for a single-camera talk, lesson, interview, or demonstration.

When to use an encoder instead

Use the direct webcam workflow when you need a simple camera-and-microphone broadcast. An encoder workflow is more appropriate if you need overlays, gameplay capture, multiple video sources, mixers, or more control over output settings. It takes additional setup: you configure streaming software or hardware and send the resulting stream to YouTube.

YouTube identifies webcams, external microphones, and headphones as common equipment for casual or gaming encoder setups, with more involved productions potentially using multiple cameras, microphones, mixers, and hardware encoders. These are options, not prerequisites for a basic webcam stream. YouTube’s overview of streaming methods explains the distinction.

Prepare the connection and test the broadcast

  • Check upload bandwidth. The relevant measure is upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available to your stream. This is planning guidance, not a guarantee against interruptions. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  • Run a test before the real event. Test the same camera, microphone, movement, and network you expect to use. Check the preview, listen to the audio, and look for stream-health warnings before you announce the event.
  • Monitor after starting. Watch stream health and listen for problems while live. If YouTube reports poor connection or the picture and sound degrade, reduce the demands on the setup or move to a more reliable upload connection.

Encoder bitrate recommendations are not webcam requirements

The direct browser workflow does not ask you to set an encoder bitrate. The figures below apply only when using an encoder, and should not be treated as universal settings for every webcam or computer. YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends these ranges for 1080p at 30 fps:

Encoder codec YouTube recommended bitrate at 1080p30
H.264 5–14 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 4–10 Mbps

Recommendations vary with resolution, frame rate, and codec. Check YouTube’s full encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the format you plan to send, then test that your encoder and connection can sustain it.

Troubleshoot common webcam-stream problems

  • You cannot select Webcam or start a live stream: confirm the channel is verified, meets YouTube’s age and restriction requirements, and has live streaming enabled. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming help.
  • The camera or microphone is missing: check browser permissions, close other apps that may be using the device, then return to the preview and select the intended camera and microphone.
  • The picture is dark, poorly framed, or shaky: reposition the computer, improve the light facing the subject, and check framing in the preview before restarting the broadcast.
  • Viewers hear echo or unclear audio: verify the selected microphone, reduce nearby speaker volume, and test with headphones. Speak at the distance and level you will use during the event.
  • The stream buffers or stream health reports a problem: check upload capacity and whether the connection is shared, then reduce competing network use or switch to a steadier connection. For encoder streams, lower the output demands to a bitrate your upload can reliably sustain.

For a live event, make changes during a test rather than discovering device or connection problems after viewers arrive.

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without leaving a computer or home connection on, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
