Yes. Run OpenVPN in server mode on a publicly reachable Linux VPS, connect your home or remote machine as a client, enable IPv4 forwarding, and apply source NAT on the VPS. With redirect-gateway def1 pushed to the client, ordinary Internet traffic leaves through the VPS, so websites see the VPS’s public address instead of the client’s address.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenVPN, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
The setup succeeds only when all four links are present: a reachable OpenVPN listener, a working tunnel and certificate chain, Linux forwarding, and firewall rules that allow forwarding plus POSTROUTING masquerading. DNS also needs an intentional configuration once the client becomes full-tunnel.

What the VPS middleman actually does
The VPS is both the OpenVPN server and the Internet gateway for the VPN subnet. Your home server or laptop encrypts packets into the tunnel; OpenVPN terminates that tunnel on the VPS; Linux forwards the packets from the tunnel interface to the VPS’s Internet-facing interface; source NAT changes the packets’ source address to the VPS address before they go online. Replies return to the VPS, are de-NATed, and travel back through the tunnel.
client device OpenVPN tunnel VPS (OpenVPN server)
forwarding + source NAT Internet
This is different from a port-forwarding arrangement. Port forwarding publishes a service behind the VPS; the middleman design routes outbound traffic from the client through the VPS. It can therefore make a home server’s outbound connections appear to originate from the VPS, provided the client installs a default route through the tunnel.

Requirements to check before configuring anything
- A public VPS address: the client must be able to reach the VPS from the network where it runs. The VPS provider must permit you to run a VPN listener and modify firewall or networking settings.
- Administrative access: you need root or equivalent
sudoaccess for OpenVPN, sysctl, and firewall changes. - A known Internet interface: common names include
eth0andens3, but provider images can use something else. Find the interface used by the default route instead of assuming a name. - A defined tunnel subnet: use the subnet in the actual OpenVPN server configuration. The examples below use
10.9.8.0/24for NAT and mention10.8.0.0/24only where the DNS example requires it; these are examples, not values to copy blindly. - A client that supports OpenVPN profiles: this may be a home server, workstation, router, or another remote host.
- PKI material: the server certificate and private key, a client certificate and key, and the CA material used to validate them. Keep private keys inaccessible to other users and plan how you will revoke a lost client credential.
Record the VPS address, the OpenVPN listener address and protocol, the tunnel interface name, the tunnel subnet, and the VPS’s egress interface before writing firewall rules. Every later rule depends on those values.
Choose full-tunnel or split-tunnel routing
| Mode | How it is selected | What uses the VPS | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full tunnel | Push redirect-gateway def1 |
All client IP traffic, including ordinary Internet traffic | Simple central egress and a VPS public IP, but more bandwidth and OpenVPN processing; DHCP and DNS behavior can require platform-specific handling |
| Split tunnel | Push only selected route entries, or control route installation with --route, --route-gateway, and --route-nopull |
Only destinations covered by the pushed routes | Preserves local Internet and local-resource access, but traffic outside those routes continues to bypass the VPS |
If the goal is specifically “make my public IP the VPS IP,” use full-tunnel routing and verify that the client’s default routes changed. If you only need access to a private network or a few destinations, split tunneling avoids sending unrelated traffic through the VPS.

Install the OpenVPN package supplied by your Linux distribution. Keep the server configuration and generated PKI files in the locations expected by that distribution’s service unit. Package layouts differ, so check which configuration directory and instance naming convention your image uses before enabling a service.
Generate server and client credentials
Use a PKI utility such as Easy-RSA to create a certificate authority, a server certificate and key, and at least one client certificate and key. The client profile must contain or reference the material needed to authenticate to this particular server. Certificate handling is part of the routing security boundary. When a laptop, home server, or account is retired, revoke its client certificate rather than merely deleting a profile. Keep a documented copy of the revocation procedure and protect the CA key separately from the running VPS.
Configure the OpenVPN server
Create the server configuration with the tunnel address pool, certificate paths, and listener settings required by your distribution. The crucial full-tunnel directive is:
push "redirect-gateway def1"
This tells a connected client to send all IP traffic through the OpenVPN server. For split tunneling, omit that directive and push only the destination routes the client should use through the VPS. A route-only design must still have forwarding and NAT if those selected destinations are reached through the VPS’s Internet interface.
Enable Linux packet forwarding
OpenVPN can establish a tunnel while Linux still refuses to route packets between interfaces. Linux controls IPv4 forwarding with net.ipv4.ip_forward: 0 disables forwarding and 1 enables it.

- Create a persistent sysctl drop-in containing exactly:
net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1
- Apply the setting with your distribution’s sysctl reload command, then inspect the live value:
sudo sysctl --system
sysctl net.ipv4.ip_forward
The second command should report net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1. Confirm this before changing firewall rules. A tunnel that connects but cannot reach anything beyond the VPS often has forwarding disabled, so checking the kernel switch first prevents misdiagnosing the problem as OpenVPN authentication.
Permit forwarding and add source NAT
Identify the interfaces and subnet
The tunnel interface is commonly named tun0, but use the name shown by your running OpenVPN instance. The Internet-facing interface is the device on the VPS’s default route; it may be eth0, ens3, or a provider-specific name. The NAT source must be the actual VPN client subnet from your server configuration.

iptables example
If your firewall’s FORWARD policy is DROP, allow the VPN subnet to leave through the VPS interface and allow only established return traffic back to the tunnel. A narrowly scoped example is:
iptables -A FORWARD -i tun0 -o eth0 -s 10.9.8.0/24 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o tun0 -d 10.9.8.0/24 -m conntrack --ctstate ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
Replace tun0, eth0, and 10.9.8.0/24 with the values in your deployment. Then add source NAT on the Internet-facing interface:

iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.9.8.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE
Masquerading rewrites the source to the outgoing interface address. That is what makes Internet services see the VPS address rather than an unroutable private tunnel address. The rule must match both the real tunnel subnet and the real egress interface; a correct rule with either value wrong will not translate the client’s packets.
nftables equivalent
On systems using nftables as the active firewall stack, implement the same policy in the distribution’s nftables configuration: a postrouting chain with a masquerade rule for the VPN source subnet and egress interface, plus forward-chain rules for new tunnel-to-Internet traffic and established return traffic. Nftables defines masquerade as source NAT using the outgoing interface address. Do not run overlapping, independently managed iptables and nftables policies unless you understand how your distribution translates and persists them.
Persist whichever firewall system you choose. A rule that works in the current shell but disappears at reboot produces an intermittent VPN that is difficult to diagnose.
Give full-tunnel clients a usable DNS path
When redirect-gateway def1 is active, DNS queries can follow the VPN path too. The client therefore needs a resolver reachable through the tunnel, and that resolver must either answer the queries or forward them onward. One documented pattern is:
Best Value
push "dhcp-option DNS 10.8.0.1"
Use a resolver address that actually exists and is reachable from your tunnel; do not copy 10.8.0.1 unless your configuration provides that address. If DNS resolution fails while numeric Internet addresses work, inspect the client DNS settings and the resolver’s reachability separately from the NAT rules.
Full-tunnel routing can expose DHCP-renewal and Windows DNS edge cases. If local DHCP services or local-name resolution must remain on the physical network, use split tunneling or the platform’s specific DNS controls rather than assuming every client handles pushed DNS identically.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Start the correct OpenVPN service and connect a client
- Place the server configuration where your distribution’s OpenVPN service expects instance files.
- Start the instance-specific unit. Ubuntu’s documented pattern is an instance such as
openvpn@myserver; the genericopenvpnunit may not start the configuration you just created. - Check the service status and OpenVPN log for a completed TLS handshake and an assigned tunnel address.
- Import the generated client profile on the home server or remote device, then connect it.
- Inspect the client’s routing table. In full-tunnel mode, the two routes installed by
redirect-gateway def1should direct ordinary destinations through the tunnel while preserving a path to the VPS itself.
Do not test only for a “connected” status. A successful TLS session proves authentication and tunnel establishment; it does not prove that Linux forwarding, firewall policy, NAT, or DNS is correct.
Verify that the VPS is really the Internet gateway
- Check the tunnel address: confirm the client received an address from the configured VPN subnet.
- Check routes: inspect the client routing table before and after connection. In full-tunnel mode, the default Internet path should be represented by the OpenVPN routes rather than the local gateway.
- Check public address: record the client’s public Internet address with the VPN disconnected, connect the tunnel, and check again. With full-tunnel routing and working MASQUERADE, the post-connection address should be the VPS egress address.
- Check DNS independently: resolve a known name and confirm that the configured resolver is reachable through the tunnel. A public-address change with broken name resolution indicates a DNS problem, not necessarily a NAT problem.
- Check the VPS: inspect OpenVPN logs, FORWARD-chain counters, and POSTROUTING NAT counters while generating traffic from the client. Counters that never increase identify the layer where packets stop.
Test from the actual machine whose traffic you want to route. A browser on your laptop cannot prove that a separate home server is using the tunnel, and a successful ping to the VPS cannot prove Internet forwarding.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Most likely layer | Checks and correction |
|---|---|---|
| The client cannot connect | Reachability, listener, or certificates | Confirm the VPS address is publicly reachable, the OpenVPN listener is running on the expected protocol and address, and the client certificate/key pair is valid. Review the OpenVPN log for TLS or certificate errors. |
| The tunnel connects but no Internet traffic works | Kernel forwarding, FORWARD policy, or NAT | Verify net.ipv4.ip_forward is 1; check tunnel-to-egress and established-return rules; confirm MASQUERADE uses the real VPN subnet and egress interface. |
| The VPS is reachable but the public address does not change | Routing mode | Confirm the server pushes redirect-gateway def1 and that the client installed the resulting routes. If only selected routes were pushed, unrelated Internet traffic is expected to bypass the VPS. |
| Numeric sites work but names do not | DNS | Use a resolver reachable from the tunnel, validate the pushed dhcp-option DNS, and account for the client’s DNS-management behavior. |
| Rules work until reboot | Persistence | Persist the sysctl drop-in, OpenVPN instance, and the selected iptables or nftables policy. Recheck counters after a reboot. |
| Browsing is noticeably slower | Full-tunnel overhead or VPS capacity | OpenVPN documents a performance penalty when all traffic is routed through the VPN. Use split tunneling for traffic that does not need the VPS, and avoid sending bulk traffic through an undersized VPS. |
Security and operational maintenance
- Protect private keys: restrict file permissions and user access on both VPS and clients. A stolen client key is a valid VPN credential until revoked.
- Use revocation, not just deletion: Easy-RSA and the OpenVPN PKI workflow support certificate generation and revocation. Keep the revocation process available even when a device is offline.
- Keep firewall scope narrow: allow forwarding from the VPN subnet to the intended egress interface and permit established replies; do not turn the VPS into an unrestricted router for unrelated source networks.
- Preserve administrative access: test firewall changes from an active SSH session and ensure the rules do not block the VPS’s management path.
- Monitor after changes: a connected client, forwarding counters, NAT counters, route inspection, and DNS resolution each verify a different part of the path.
When to choose another approach
| Decision | Choose this when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Full tunnel | You need the VPS public address for nearly all client Internet traffic | More bandwidth and processing through the VPS; possible DHCP and DNS complications |
| Split tunnel | Only selected networks or destinations need the VPS | Local and unrelated traffic keeps its ordinary path, but the VPS is not the universal public egress |
| iptables | You already operate a legacy iptables firewall and understand its persistence method | Familiar syntax, but it may not be the distribution’s preferred firewall stack |
| nftables | Your distribution manages firewall policy with nftables | Native current-stack integration, but the ruleset must include both forwarding and postrouting masquerade |
| Community OpenVPN | You want direct control over configuration, routing, certificates, and firewall rules | More manual administration |
| OpenVPN Access Server | You prefer managed administration and its documented routing/NAT workflow | Less hands-on control than building the community configuration yourself |
For a single home server or remote workstation, the community daemon on a small Linux VPS is enough when you are comfortable maintaining PKI and firewall state. A managed server product becomes relevant when several users, device enrollment, and centralized administration matter more than minimal moving parts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can this route a home server’s traffic through a VPS?
Yes, as long as the home server itself runs the OpenVPN client (or sends its traffic to a local router that does), receives a tunnel address, installs the intended routes, and the VPS forwards and masquerades that tunnel subnet. The VPS cannot change traffic from devices that never use the tunnel or a router configured to send their traffic into it.
What the final working state looks like
A correct deployment has a reachable VPS listener, a mutually authenticated OpenVPN tunnel, a client address from the VPN subnet, net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1, forward-chain permits in both necessary directions, POSTROUTING MASQUERADE on the actual egress interface, and a DNS resolver reachable through the tunnel. In full-tunnel mode, route inspection and a before-and-after public-address check should show that the VPS is the client’s Internet middleman.
