How to Use a VPN with Amazon eero: Network-Wide and Device Options

Amazon eero can pass VPN traffic, but it does not route your whole network through a built-in VPN. Learn the network-wide router and device-level options.

Amazon eero supports VPN passthrough, but it does not provide a built-in VPN that routes every device on your home network through a VPN. For network-wide coverage, eero’s documented option is to place a VPN-capable router between your modem and the gateway eero. Alternatively, install a VPN app on individual devices; eero Plus also includes Guardian VPN for up to five supported devices.

What eero’s VPN support does—and does not—do

eero’s support documentation makes an important distinction: eero supports VPN passthrough but doesn’t currently offer network-wide VPN support. Passthrough allows encrypted VPN traffic to travel through the eero network; it does not make eero itself the VPN router for all connected devices.

That leaves two practical approaches: route the network through a separate VPN-capable router, or use VPN software on the devices you want protected. The right choice depends on whether you need all-network coverage and are comfortable adding hardware, or prefer to manage VPN connections device by device.

Set up network-wide VPN coverage with an upstream router

For a network-wide arrangement, eero’s documented topology places a VPN-capable router between the modem and the gateway eero. The separate router handles the VPN connection; eero passes the encrypted traffic. The support page does not name tested router models or provide a protocol-compatibility list, so confirm VPN capability and the required configuration with the router manufacturer before buying or connecting equipment.

If your setup includes an existing router as well as eero, avoid leaving both devices routing the network unless your equipment and configuration specifically support that arrangement. eero advises bridging either the existing router or the eero network. Which device to bridge depends on your setup:

  • Bridge the existing router: eero says this lets eero manage network traffic and preserves eero app features.
  • Bridge eero: eero functions as access points rather than as the router, and some advanced eero features become unavailable.

Bridge mode changes eero’s routing role; it is not itself a VPN setting. The cabling and correct bridge-mode choice depend on your modem, router, and ISP configuration. Follow the setup instructions from eero and the router manufacturer rather than assuming one wiring sequence fits every installation.

Use Guardian VPN on supported devices

eero Plus includes Guardian VPN for up to five supported devices. This protects participating devices when their VPN is active; it does not automatically cover every device connected to your eero network.

  1. Open the eero app and select Security & privacy.
  2. Choose VPN powered by Guardian and enable the VPN.
  3. Complete the remaining setup in Guardian.

eero’s setup guide lists minimum app versions of 6.32.0 for iOS and 6.32.1 for Android. App requirements and interface labels can change, so check the current eero support instructions if the options differ. The guide also says the VPN is visible in the eero app to the network owner, not network admins.

Account for streaming and feature tradeoffs

Some streaming platforms may block VPN connections. eero notes that you may need to disconnect the VPN to watch affected services. With a device-level VPN, that means disconnecting it on the device you are using; with an upstream router setup, the VPN routing configuration determines how traffic is handled. Check the router’s instructions for any available way to change or pause VPN routing.

Bridge mode also involves a tradeoff: eero operating as an access point loses some advanced features, while bridging the existing router is eero’s recommended way to retain eero app features when both routers are present. Check eero’s current feature documentation before changing modes.

What to verify before choosing equipment

  • Confirm whether you need VPN coverage for every device or only selected phones and computers.
  • For a whole-network setup, verify that the separate router supports the VPN service and configuration you intend to use.
  • Check your modem, ISP, and existing-router setup before changing cabling or bridge mode.
  • Consider whether streaming access and eero’s advanced app features matter to your setup.

eero’s support pages do not compare VPN-router throughput, latency, specific protocols, named third-party models, or independent security audits. Treat model compatibility and performance as questions to verify with the router maker and VPN provider, rather than assuming that any router labeled VPN-capable will suit your network.
