The right way to use a VPN on a smart TV depends on its operating system. Android TV and Google TV may support a VPN app directly; Samsung Tizen and LG webOS generally need another route, such as a VPN-compatible router or a separate streaming device with its own VPN app. Check your TV model and software version before choosing a setup.
Can you install a VPN directly on a smart TV?
Sometimes. Direct installation depends on the TV’s operating system, the exact model, and whether the VPN app is available in that device’s app store. Android TV and Google TV are common app-based options, but availability should be checked on the specific television. Provider guidance also lists Amazon Fire TV, Vega OS, and Apple TVs running tvOS 17 or later as platforms with direct apps; that does not guarantee support on every model.

For TVs without a compatible app, you can route the TV’s connection through a VPN-compatible router or use an external streaming device that supports a VPN app. Those approaches differ in coverage: a TV app or streaming-device app protects that device, while a VPN configured on a router can cover devices connected through it.
Choose a setup that fits your TV and what you want to protect
| Setup | Works best when | What it protects | Main requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN app on the TV | The television’s OS supports the VPN app | The TV while its VPN app is connected | Compatible model, OS version, and app-store availability |
| VPN-compatible router | The TV has no supported app, or you want network-level coverage | Devices connected through the configured router | A router that supports VPN connections and configuration |
| External streaming device | The built-in TV system lacks a VPN app | The streaming device connected to the TV | An additional compatible device and its VPN app |
| Windows VPN-protected hotspot | You already have a Windows computer and want a fallback | Devices you connect to the shared hotspot | A Windows computer configured to share its VPN-protected connection |
| DNS-based streaming feature | You need a provider’s DNS-routing feature and understand its limits | DNS routing only; not VPN encryption or IP masking | Support for the specific DNS feature and device |
How to set up a VPN app on Android TV or Google TV
On a compatible TV, use the built-in app store first. ExpressVPN’s setup instructions cover Android 7.0 and later, while other providers publish their own device and version requirements. Menus and app availability can vary by model and software version.

- 4. Built-In Home Firewall & Traffic Monitoring: Functions as a light weight home firewall, helping monitor and control network traffic. Adds anadditional layer of protection against malicious domains and unwanted outbound connections.
- 5. Hardware VPN vs Software VPN: A dedicated hardware VPN privacy router offers centralized protection without slowing individual devices. One device. One network policy. Full-home coverage
- Open the TV’s app store, such as Google Play Store, and search for your VPN provider’s official app.
- Install the app, open it, and sign in using your VPN account.
- Select a server location if the app asks you to choose one, then connect.
- Confirm the app shows an active connection before opening the streaming app you want to use.
If the app is not listed in the store, check the provider’s official support instructions for your exact TV. Some providers document installing an Android Package Kit (APK) manually. Use only the provider’s official download source; avoid APK sites run by third parties. An app may still be incompatible with a particular TV even if the TV uses Android-based software.
What to do on Samsung Tizen or LG webOS
The provider guidance cited here describes no native VPN apps for Samsung Tizen or LG webOS. For a full VPN connection on one of these TVs, the best-supported option is a VPN-compatible router: connect the TV to that router and configure the VPN on the router using its documentation and your VPN provider’s instructions. Router compatibility varies by model, and setup can be more involved than installing a TV app.

Another option is an external streaming device with a supported VPN app. Connect it to the TV, install the VPN on the device, and use it for streaming. This avoids changing router settings, but it requires an extra purchase and protects only that connected streaming device.

These are not substitutes for an encrypted VPN tunnel. ExpressVPN says MediaStreamer does not encrypt traffic or mask the IP address. NordVPN publishes SmartDNS setup instructions for LG TVs, though menus can differ by model. Feature availability can change, so check the provider’s current support information before following older setup instructions.

Router, streaming device, or Windows hotspot?
Use a router when you want coverage beyond the TV
A VPN-compatible router can protect the TV and other devices routed through it, rather than requiring an app on each one. Confirm that your router supports VPN connections before following configuration steps; support and instructions depend on the router model. Configuration is typically more complex than installing an app and can affect connection speed, so check the router and VPN provider’s guidance before changing settings.
Use a streaming device for a simpler app-based workaround
A compatible Fire TV Stick or Android TV box can provide a VPN app even when the television’s own system does not. Chromecast with Google TV is another device category listed in provider support guidance. Check the exact device generation, operating system, and app availability before buying. The VPN connection applies to the streaming device, not automatically to every device on your home network.

Use a Windows hotspot if you already have the equipment
A Windows computer can share a VPN-protected hotspot, letting you choose which devices connect through it. This can be a practical fallback if you already have a suitable computer, but it is not as direct as a TV app and depends on the computer and hotspot configuration.
VPN tunnel versus Smart DNS: what changes?
A VPN app or a correctly configured VPN router sends traffic through an encrypted VPN connection and presents the VPN server’s IP address to services that see that connection. DNS-only routing works differently: it can change how domain-name requests are handled for supported services, but it does not provide VPN encryption or hide the device’s IP address. Do not choose a DNS-only feature if your goal is VPN privacy.

Before you subscribe or change your setup
- Identify the TV’s exact model, operating system, and software version in its settings.
- Check whether the VPN app appears in that TV’s app store and whether the provider supports that model or OS version.
- If considering a router, look up VPN support for the router’s precise model and hardware revision.
- If buying a streaming device, verify its current operating system and the VPN app’s availability before purchase.
- Decide whether you need protection for just the TV or for multiple devices routed through a VPN-configured router.
- Distinguish encrypted VPN service from Smart DNS or other DNS-only features, and confirm that any feature you plan to use is still offered.
Provider compatibility pages are useful starting points, not guarantees for every device. For example, see ExpressVPN’s Android TV setup guide, NordVPN’s Android TV instructions, and NordVPN’s router guidance. For platform-specific details, consult ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer explanation and NordVPN’s LG SmartDNS instructions.
