Yes. A compatible smartphone can use an eSIM for cellular service and a separate virtual-number service for calls or messages. The eSIM connects the phone to a mobile carrier; the virtual-number provider manages a different number, often through an app, call forwarding, or both. Installing an eSIM does not automatically create a virtual number.
What an eSIM and a virtual number each do
The eSIM connects you to a mobile network
An eSIM is a SIM profile provisioned digitally to a device’s embedded secure element. It performs the SIM role of authenticating the device to a mobile operator for a subscribed plan; it is not merely a data-app setting. The GSMA describes eSIM as securely downloading a SIM profile into a device’s embedded secure element, with protection equivalent to a removable SIM. See the GSMA eSIM overview and its consumer remote-provisioning specifications, SGP.21 V3.1 and SGP.22 v2.5.

The virtual number belongs to a separate service
A virtual number is assigned or hosted by a calling or messaging provider. Depending on the service, you may use its app over Wi-Fi or cellular data, have calls forwarded to linked numbers, or use a combination. Google Voice illustrates these options: its number can be used for calls in the app or at voice.google.com, and calls can optionally ring linked phone numbers. Those details describe Google Voice, not every virtual-number provider. See Google Voice Help.
Can I use a virtual number with an eSIM?
Yes, if the phone supports the eSIM plan and the virtual-number service supports your device, account, and location. The eSIM can provide cellular data for the virtual-number app when Wi-Fi is unavailable. The app’s number remains associated with the separate provider; it does not become a carrier-issued number on the eSIM. If the service forwards calls to another number, that linked number and the provider’s forwarding settings determine where calls ring.

It is also possible to use a virtual-number app over Wi-Fi without a physical SIM or an active eSIM, provided the app can connect to the internet and the service allows the required functions. Without any internet connection, an app-based service generally cannot deliver calls or messages through the app; forwarding behavior is service-specific and may depend on a reachable linked number.
Can I have two phone numbers on one phone?
Often, but the number of usable lines and the way calls behave depend on the phone, its software and regional variant, the carrier, and the virtual-number provider. One number may be associated with a mobile carrier plan on an eSIM, while another is handled inside a separate app or through forwarding. They are not necessarily two equivalent carrier lines: caller ID, ordinary SMS, voicemail, and simultaneous call handling can differ.

Before relying on both numbers, check whether each service supports the exact functions you need, including receiving calls while the other line is active and sending or receiving SMS. Do not assume a virtual number can receive verification texts or short codes simply because it can receive ordinary messages.

Will a virtual number work when I travel with an eSIM?
It may, if the travel eSIM provides internet access where you are and the virtual-number provider permits use from that location. An app call can use the travel eSIM’s data connection or Wi-Fi; the eSIM itself does not make the virtual number a local carrier number. If your virtual-number setup relies on forwarding, confirm that the linked destination can receive forwarded calls while you travel and review any provider-specific charges or restrictions.

Availability, SMS support, verification messages, and emergency calling vary by provider and region. Google Voice’s terms, for example, describe emergency-calling limitations for that service; they should not be treated as a statement about other providers. Review the applicable service terms, such as Google Voice Personal terms, before depending on a virtual number for urgent calls.
How to check compatibility and set up both services
- Check the exact phone model and regional variant. Confirm that it supports eSIM; availability can differ by model and country. Apple’s eSIM setup guidance covers iPhone requirements, while other manufacturers publish their own model-specific requirements.
- Check the phone’s lock status. If you plan to use an eSIM from a different provider, confirm that the phone is unlocked. Apple explains that an unlocked iPhone can use eSIM plans offered by other network providers in its provider availability guidance.
- Confirm carrier and country support. Ask the mobile or travel provider whether its eSIM plan supports your device and destination. Depending on carrier support, Apple lists activation methods including carrier activation, eSIM transfer, QR code, provider app, link, and manual setup in its setup instructions.
- Install or configure the virtual-number service. Check whether it handles calls through its app, forwards them to linked numbers, or offers both. For Google Voice, calls can ring in the app or web interface and can optionally be forwarded to linked numbers, as described in Google Voice Help.
- Test the functions you will depend on. Try incoming and outgoing calls, ordinary SMS, voicemail, caller ID, and verification texts if the provider says it supports them. Test while on Wi-Fi and while using the eSIM’s cellular data, and check travel use before leaving.
If your current phone cannot use eSIM, a compatible unlocked model may be needed. Verify the precise model, regional variant, carrier compatibility, and lock status before choosing a replacement.

What to compare when choosing a virtual-number service
There is no single set of features that applies to all virtual numbers. First define your country, destination, and use case, then compare providers on the terms that affect that use:
