How to Use a USB SSD for an FFmpeg YouTube Playlist on Raspberry Pi

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use the USB SSD as media storage, mount it at a stable path, create an FFmpeg concat playlist, and send the repeating input to YouTube Live using the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Keep the Pi’s existing boot drive unless you specifically want to configure USB boot: media storage and boot storage are separate choices, and USB boot support depends on the Pi model and setup.

The exact command and encoding settings depend on your Raspberry Pi model and the videos’ codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio. The workflow below shows how to prepare and test the setup without claiming one configuration will work on every Pi.

What you need to decide first

  • Which Pi and operating system? Note the exact model and OS version before choosing mount or encoding instructions.
  • Media storage or boot storage? For this workflow, the SSD can hold videos while the Pi continues to boot from its current storage. Raspberry Pi documents USB mass-storage boot for supported, configured systems, but boot options vary by model. See the Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation and getting-started documentation.
  • Can the Pi sustain the stream? The right output resolution and bitrate depend on the source media, whether FFmpeg must encode, the Pi’s capacity, and your upload connection. The platform recommendations below are not a guarantee that a particular Pi can encode them in real time.
  • How is the SSD powered? Check the drive and enclosure requirements and what else is connected to USB. Raspberry Pi notes that attached disks draw power; multiple disks may call for externally powered hardware.

Connect and mount the SSD

Connect the drive, then use the storage tools for your Raspberry Pi OS to format and mount it. There is no single filesystem, partitioning scheme, or mount command established for every Pi and OS combination, so use the instructions appropriate to your installation. Choose a stable mount location and keep the playlist and video files there; if the mount path changes, file entries in the playlist will stop resolving.

Once mounted, confirm that the Pi can read the files and that the SSD remains connected during sustained activity. If you intend to use the SSD as boot media as well, check your exact model’s boot guidance rather than assuming that plugging in a USB disk is sufficient.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Prepare compatible videos and an FFmpeg concat list

The concat demuxer reads a text file containing media file paths in sequence. FFmpeg’s documentation states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” This makes concat convenient for compatible files, not a conversion tool for mismatched videos. Incorrect duration metadata can also lead to artifacts or gaps. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

  1. Put the videos on the mounted SSD.
  2. Create a plain-text playlist file on the SSD. Use the concat demuxer’s documented file syntax and paths that resolve from the Pi’s mounted directory.
  3. Check that listed files have matching stream structure, codecs, and time bases. If transitions have gaps or artifacts, check the files’ duration metadata and compatibility.
  4. Test the list locally before sending it to a public stream. If sources differ in a way concat cannot handle, convert them to a consistent format or use an encoding workflow that suits the Pi.

Do not assume that a single stream-copy or re-encoding command is suitable for every library. Stream copying avoids re-encoding but only works when the input streams are appropriate for the destination and compatible with one another. Re-encoding adds processing work; without the exact Pi model and source details, no universal Raspberry Pi encode capability or safe bitrate can be prescribed.

Get YouTube Live’s RTMPS address and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the scheduled or intended broadcast.
  2. Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s instructions are in Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your live event.
  4. Configure FFmpeg to send to the RTMPS destination using the key. Use the installed FFmpeg version’s help and documentation for the exact command syntax and option placement.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and frame rates up to 60 fps. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not proof that a given Pi can encode a chosen resolution or frame rate in real time. Select settings the Pi and upload connection can sustain, and check YouTube’s current guidance before going live.

Loop the playlist and test before going public

FFmpeg provides -stream_loop as an input option for repeating an input. Its behavior with a concat input and the correct placement of options depend on the installed version and invocation; consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and local FFmpeg help rather than copying an unverified universal command.

  1. Run a local playback or other non-public test with the playlist. Confirm that files advance in the intended order and that audio and video remain synchronized.
  2. Start a private or scheduled YouTube test using the RTMPS URL and key. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health indicators; an FFmpeg process running without errors does not by itself prove viewers are receiving stable audio and video.
  3. Check the loop boundary and several transitions. If the stream pauses or shows artifacts, investigate file compatibility and duration metadata.
  4. Only move to the intended audience after the preview and health indicators are satisfactory.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Playlist entries fail to open The SSD is not mounted where expected, or playlist paths do not match the mount location. Confirm the drive is mounted, readable, and using the stable path referenced by the playlist.
Gaps, artifacts, or failures at transitions Files have mismatched streams, codecs, time bases, or inaccurate duration metadata. Check each listed file against FFmpeg concat’s compatibility requirements and inspect duration metadata; make sources consistent if needed.
Loop does not repeat as expected The loop option may be placed incorrectly, or behavior may differ with the installed FFmpeg version and concat input. Check the local FFmpeg help and command-line documentation for input option placement and test the precise playlist invocation outside a public broadcast.
YouTube does not receive a usable stream Wrong ingest URL or key, unsupported output settings, or unstable upload. Re-copy the RTMPS URL and key from the correct Live Control Room event, verify encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance, and inspect the preview and health indicators.
SSD disconnects or storage errors appear under load Insufficient or unstable power, a poor cable or enclosure connection, or competing USB power demands. Check the cable, enclosure, drive power requirements, and other attached devices. If the setup needs more power, consider a powered enclosure or powered USB hub; it is not required in every setup.
Video stutters while FFmpeg runs The Pi may be unable to sustain the chosen encode settings, or the upload connection may not sustain the outgoing stream. Check the Pi model, whether you are encoding or stream-copying, source properties, YouTube preview, and connection stability. Lower the workload only after testing a supported output configuration.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules

Having a playlist that runs technically does not establish that you have the right to broadcast every video or that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and channel policies before scheduling a long-running broadcast. A technical test is not a policy review.
