For a sequence of files, use a VLC Video source and turn on Loop Playlist. Those settings control OBS playback; YouTube’s viewer-side Loop control does not change the video feeding your live broadcast.
Choose the right OBS loop setting
One clip: Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene containing the clip and click its Media Source in the Sources list.
- Open Properties.
- Enable Loop, then confirm the change.
- Preview the scene and wait for the clip to reach its end. It should begin again from the start.
OBS describes Loop as replaying the file after playback completes. If the clip reaches its last frame and stays there rather than restarting, check whether Loop is enabled. The separate Show nothing when playback ends option determines what OBS displays after a file finishes; it does not replace the loop setting. See OBS’s media-source documentation.
Several clips: VLC Video playlist
- Install VLC. The OBS VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene.
- Open its properties and add the files you want to play to the playlist. Set the order or shuffle behavior to suit your stream.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then preview playback through the end of the list to confirm it restarts as intended.
OBS’s Loop Playlist control restarts the source after it runs out of media files. The VLC source’s playback behavior setting also affects what happens when its source is inactive: playback can stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue. This governs the OBS source when it is hidden or inactive, not whether the YouTube broadcast itself has ended. See OBS’s VLC Video source documentation.
Check whether the problem is playback, display, or YouTube
- The clip repeats, but you want a different sequence: A single Media Source is designed to replay its one file when Loop is enabled. Use a VLC Video playlist when you need multiple clips.
- The picture freezes on the final frame: Check Media Source’s Loop option. Show nothing when playback ends only changes the display after completion.
- The clip starts over after changing scenes: Review Restart playback when source becomes active. That setting controls the source’s starting point when it becomes active; it is separate from Loop.
- You are clicking YouTube’s Loop option: YouTube’s viewer Loop control repeats a video or playlist for an individual viewer. It does not change what OBS sends into a live stream. Configure repetition in OBS instead. YouTube’s live-stream settings cover the stream URL, key, and encoder-related settings; see YouTube’s live-streaming settings.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
Confirm both the media playback and the broadcast. In OBS, preview the scene, let the file or playlist reach its end, and check that the source behaves correctly when hidden or when you switch scenes. Start the broadcast and monitor stream health rather than assuming a working loop means the live connection will stay up.

A loop only controls file playback. The encoder, network connection, stream key, source files, and YouTube can each affect whether the broadcast continues. OBS media sources support video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, plus audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV; an unsupported or problematic file may prevent expected playback. YouTube provides the stream URL and key through its live settings. Keep the key private and verify the selected key and encoder settings if OBS cannot connect.

OBS keeps the playback and encoding on your own computer, so that machine and its connection need to remain active for the live stream to continue. Cloud-hosted prerecorded streaming is an alternative when you want the playback hosted remotely. Compare playlist controls, file limits, supported platforms, service terms, and recovery behavior before choosing a provider; a provider’s own claims are not independent reliability measurements.
