How to Use a USB SSD for an FFmpeg YouTube Loop Stream on Raspberry Pi

Use a USB SSD for media storage and FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option to repeat a video to YouTube Live from a Raspberry Pi. Learn the setup, settings, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes. A Raspberry Pi can read a video from a USB SSD and send it to YouTube Live with FFmpeg; the Pi’s operating system can remain on a microSD card. Mount the SSD, identify the video’s path, place -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i input, then send the output to the RTMPS server URL and stream key for your YouTube Live event. Test the exact Pi, FFmpeg build, file, and network before relying on it for a continuous stream.

What you need

  • A Raspberry Pi and a supported operating-system setup.
  • A USB SSD, enclosure, or adapter that works with your Pi, plus any power supply the drive requires.
  • A video file readable by the account that will run FFmpeg.
  • An FFmpeg build with the encoder and RTMPS support needed for your chosen output.
  • A YouTube Live event’s server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
  • A sustained internet upload connection that can carry the selected stream bitrate.

There is no single guaranteed command for every Pi: model, operating system, FFmpeg build, video format, encoder support, and upload capacity all affect the result. The example below is a starting point to adapt and test, not a verified configuration for a particular board.

Keep the video on the SSD without booting the Pi from it

The SSD can serve only as media storage. You can boot the operating system from a microSD card and read the video from the USB drive. Raspberry Pi documentation discusses USB storage as a boot option, but supported boot media and instructions depend on the model; USB boot is not required for this setup. See the Raspberry Pi computer documentation for model-specific details.

Connect, mount, and check access

  1. Connect the SSD and let the operating system detect it. Confirm that its filesystem is recognized and note where it is mounted.
  2. Find the video’s full path on the mounted drive. Do not assume the partition will always have a name such as /dev/sda1; device names can change after a reboot or reconnection.
  3. Check that the user running FFmpeg can read the file. If access fails, resolve the mount or permissions issue before starting the stream.
  4. Check the drive’s power requirements. Raspberry Pi guidance notes that USB disks and SSDs need adequate power; it says more than one attached disk typically calls for a powered enclosure or USB hub. That does not mean every single SSD needs external power.

Mount commands and filesystem support depend on the operating-system image and drive format. Use current instructions for your specific OS rather than copying a device path or mount command intended for another setup.

  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Get the YouTube Live server URL and stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live event you intend to use.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event into your FFmpeg output configuration.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube describes a stream key as functioning like a password and address for the stream; do not publish it in a command, screenshot, or shared log.

Use the values provided for your selected event rather than assuming an ingest URL. YouTube’s live streaming encoder settings and setup guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.

Build an FFmpeg command that loops the SSD video

In the shell on the Pi, adapt this schematic command. Replace the input path and the RTMPS URL/key placeholders with your actual values; never leave the placeholders as the final output target.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/mnt/ssd/loop-video.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

What the important options do

  • -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so put it before the corresponding -i.
  • -re reads the input at its native rate, which FFmpeg documents as useful for real-time output. Whether it suits a particular file and output should be checked in a test.
  • -c:v libx264 selects the software H.264 encoder if it is available in your FFmpeg build. The example does not establish that a given Pi can encode the chosen resolution and frame rate reliably.
  • -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize set video rate-control parameters; the sample values are illustrative, not universal YouTube settings.
  • -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP in this example. The correct GOP length depends on output frame rate: for a two-second keyframe interval, choose a GOP corresponding to two seconds of frames.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k encodes audio as AAC at the sample bitrate if the input contains audio. Check that the file’s audio is present and that the output is audible.
  • -f flv specifies the muxer commonly used for RTMP/RTMPS output. The output target must use the server URL and key supplied by YouTube.

Some builds or hardware may not include or sustain the example’s software encoder. Confirm the local FFmpeg version and enabled encoders/protocols, then choose settings your Pi can maintain while leaving capacity for the operating system and USB activity. Do not assume the sample bitrate or GOP fits a different resolution or frame rate.

Match the output to YouTube’s ingest guidance

Google’s YouTube Help encoder-settings page, accessed in 2026, recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS. It says not to exceed four seconds. Its current H.264 bitrate recommendations include:

Output format YouTube recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps

These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not evidence that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode those formats. Pick resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that the Pi can sustain and that your upload connection can carry steadily. The settings page can change, so check it again when configuring a future stream.

Test before leaving the stream running

  1. Run the command with the intended file and monitor FFmpeg output for input, encoder, or connection errors.
  2. Watch CPU load and confirm that the Pi keeps pace without sustained overload. Check video and audio at the YouTube end, not only in local FFmpeg logs.
  3. Open YouTube Live Control Room and monitor stream health and any warnings or messages.
  4. Test with content that has similar motion and audio to the material you plan to stream. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement.
  5. Let the stream run long enough to detect drive disconnects, power problems, upload instability, or trouble at the file loop point.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
FFmpeg cannot open the input file Wrong mount path, drive not mounted, or insufficient read permission Confirm the SSD is mounted, copy the file’s actual path, and check access as the user running FFmpeg.
The SSD disconnects or the Pi reports power trouble USB power, cable, enclosure, or multiple attached disks Check power and connections. For multiple disks, Raspberry Pi guidance says external power from an enclosure or powered hub is typically needed.
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or protocol Installed FFmpeg build lacks the requested encoder or RTMPS support Check the local build’s available encoders and protocols; select supported options or install a suitable build for your OS.
Video stutters or the stream falls behind Encoding load, unsuitable frame rate/resolution, or insufficient upload capacity Reduce output demands, select a bitrate and format the Pi can maintain, and check sustained upload capacity.
YouTube does not receive the stream Incorrect event server URL or stream key, connection issue, or output configuration Re-copy the URL and key from the selected Live Control Room event, keep the key private, and inspect FFmpeg and YouTube stream-health messages.
Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong Source audio or audio encoder configuration Check whether the file has an audio track, inspect FFmpeg’s input/output messages, and verify audio at the YouTube end during a test.
Stream disconnects when the file reaches its end Loop option omitted or placed after the input Put -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i and test through the end-of-file transition.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

A looping file still contains the same material each time it repeats. Make sure you have the rights needed to stream the video and its audio, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and channel monetization policies before making a recurring stream. Repeating a file does not establish that the content is original, licensed, or eligible for monetization.
