You can use a USB mouse or keyboard to control an Android phone when its screen still shows an image but touch is broken. If the display is black or unreadable, a mouse cannot show you what is on the phone: you need a supported external-display connection, an already-usable casting method, or repair. Start by identifying which problem you have, then check your exact phone model before buying an adapter.
First, identify what has failed
- You can see the phone’s interface, but touch does not work: try a compatible USB mouse. A keyboard can also help with text entry and navigation.
- The display is black, badly damaged, or unreadable: a mouse or keyboard alone will not make the interface visible. Check whether your exact model supports wired video output to a monitor or TV.
- The phone will not power on: an input accessory will not fix a power or hardware failure. Follow the relevant device troubleshooting guidance or contact an authorized repair center.
If the picture is visible but touch is broken
Connect a wired USB mouse through an adapter that fits your phone’s port. Android’s accessibility guidance says an external keyboard or mouse can connect over USB or Bluetooth, and that a mouse and keyboard can be used at the same time: Google’s Android accessibility guidance. With the display visible, use the pointer to navigate and enter the phone’s usual unlock method.

Connect and troubleshoot the mouse
- Check your phone’s port, such as USB-C or micro-USB, and choose an adapter that fits it and accepts the mouse’s USB plug. Confirm that your model supports USB host/OTG input; Android guidance does not establish compatibility for every handset.
- Connect the adapter and mouse. If you need to type, connect a keyboard as well, using a suitable hub if the phone has only one port.
- Look for an on-screen pointer and test it in a menu or text field. If nothing responds, check that the phone is powered and responsive, reseat the connections, and confirm the adapter and phone support the setup.
A USB mouse or keyboard provides input; it does not bypass the lock screen, remove encryption, or guarantee access to private data. You may still need to enter your PIN, password, or pattern.
If the display is black or unreadable
You need a way to see the phone’s interface before a mouse can help. A USB-C connector does not by itself prove that a phone can send video to a monitor. Google says connected-display behavior varies by device; its cited Pixel projection guidance covers Pixel 8 and later, not every Pixel or every Android phone. What a supported wired setup needs
If the phone supports wired video output, the usual setup requires a USB-C-to-HDMI hub with USB-A ports, an HDMI display and cable, plus a wired mouse and keyboard. The hub must be compatible with the phone’s video-output capability; it cannot add that capability to an unsupported model.
Samsung Galaxy procedure
Samsung’s broken-screen data-transfer procedure applies only to a Galaxy phone running Android 12 or later that also supports DisplayPort. Samsung’s page was last updated June 17, 2026; consult it for the supported model and current steps: Samsung Canada’s Galaxy broken-screen instructions.

- Connect an HDMI display and the wired mouse and keyboard to a USB-C-to-HDMI hub with USB-A ports.
- Connect the hub to the phone. Samsung instructs users to press and hold both volume buttons while connecting.
- Check the external display for the mirrored phone screen or Samsung DeX. If DeX appears, unlock the phone or exit DeX before proceeding to Smart Switch.
Samsung notes that the hub and other accessories are not included with the phone. Do not apply the volume-button sequence to other Android phones; it is part of Samsung’s documented procedure, not a universal Android step.
If wired video is unsupported
An already-configured cast connection may be an option only if you can start or approve it without using the broken display. Casting is not guaranteed to be available or usable in this situation. If the phone cannot be operated and has no compatible external-display route, repair or authorized service may be more practical than buying adapters. Can you transfer files to a computer?
Connecting a USB cable to a computer does not automatically unlock the phone or expose its files. Google’s standard transfer instructions require you to unlock the device, open the USB notification, and select “File Transfer”; some cables do not transfer files. If you cannot operate the phone, you may first need a working mouse with a visible display or a supported external-display setup. See Google’s Android file-transfer instructions.

Before spending money, check whether an image is visible, whether the phone powers on and can be unlocked, the exact model’s input and video-output support, and the full set of accessories the chosen route requires.
