A USB-C Power Delivery (PD) analyzer lets you observe communication between a power source and a device, and—depending on the model—measure electrical behavior on the connection. For an inline analyzer, connect the source and sink to opposite ends, capture a session, and read the decoded messages alongside any voltage, current, or Configuration Channel (CC) readings the instrument supports. A trace helps explain what happened in that session; it is not, by itself, proof of standards compliance.
What a USB-C PD analyzer shows
USB PD devices negotiate power over the Configuration Channel (CC). An analyzer can capture and decode that communication so you can inspect the messages exchanged between the source and sink. Texas Instruments describes its TI-PD-ANALYZER as monitoring and logging PD data on CC1 and CC2 to help analyze and debug that communication. Its product page states the supported PD revision; check that page and the guide for the exact capability relevant to your setup: TI-PD-ANALYZER product documentation.

Some instruments also report electrical readings. Those answer a different question from a protocol trace: a decoded message shows what devices communicated, while a voltage or current reading shows an electrical condition measured by the instrument. Total Phase’s explanation of its own analyzer’s voltage and current measurements is useful context, but its circuit details and available readings should not be assumed to apply to other products: Total Phase’s voltage and current measurement guide.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Electrical measurements: may show values such as VBUS voltage and current, or CC-related signals, depending on the analyzer.
Do not treat a meter reading as a decoded message, or a decoded message as a direct electrical measurement. The combination can provide a fuller picture when investigating a charging or power-negotiation problem.

How to connect and capture a session
- Check the exact instrument. Confirm its supported PD revision, connector arrangement, software, and whether it needs companion hardware. Read the manual before connecting equipment.
- Place an inline analyzer between the source and sink. Connect each side according to the instrument’s marked orientation and manual. For TI’s bidirectional unit, the guide describes a Type-C plug and receptacle and the source/sink orientation: TI-PD-ANALYZER user guide.
- Connect the analyzer to the host computer and open its supplied software. TI says its GUI displays and saves recorded communication. The specific computer and software setup depends on the instrument; follow its guide rather than assuming every model uses the same procedure.
- Capture a repeatable session. Reproduce the connection or charging condition you want to understand. Read the message ordering and roles in the trace, then compare relevant events with electrical readings if your analyzer provides them.
- Save the trace with context. Record the source, sink, cable, analyzer model, software and firmware versions, connection orientation, and test conditions so another person can interpret or reproduce the capture.
Important: TI-PD-ANALYZER requires a paired EVM
The TI-PD-ANALYZER is intended for use with a paired evaluation module (EVM); it is not licensed as a standalone product. This limitation matters before purchase or setup. Check TI’s product documentation and user guide for the required EVM and supported configuration rather than treating the analyzer as a self-contained USB-C accessory.
Analyzer, tester, and exerciser are not interchangeable labels
Products described as analyzers or testers can have substantially different functions. Some focus on observing and recording protocol traffic. Others add programmable source or sink operation, cable checks, or device exercising. Compare the exact model’s specifications and manual rather than inferring capabilities from its category name.

Use a trace for debugging, not as a compliance verdict
A captured session is evidence of the communication observed in that setup. It does not establish that a product, cable, or complete implementation complies with USB Type-C or PD requirements. USB-IF maintains separate testing specifications and equipment resources for formal testing; consult the applicable material if compliance is the goal: USB-IF compliance resources.
Use power-exercising features cautiously
If an instrument can source power or exercise a port, follow its manual and the ratings of every connected device and cable. Teledyne LeCroy warns that setting voltage or current beyond the equipment’s capabilities can damage the devices under test and their cables. Do not treat an exercising instrument like a passive monitor unless its documentation confirms the chosen operating mode is passive.
