In general, set it on a stable, heat-resistant surface, remove all packing materials before use, keep food and containers away from heating elements, and treat the oven and its contents as hot during and after cooking.
Set up the toaster oven safely
Place the oven on a level, stable, heat-resistant surface with room for airflow. Keep it away from water, other heat sources, curtains, and flammable materials. Follow the clearance requirements in the manual for your exact model. Panasonic lists different clearances for different models, while Danby directs owners to their manual for clearance and under-cabinet installation details; neither supports a universal spacing rule. Can a toaster oven go under a cabinet?
Only if the instructions for that specific model permit it and state the required clearances. Do not assume a countertop oven is safe beneath a cabinet simply because it fits there.
Prepare it before first use
Remove packaging, labels, and protective materials, then clean the cavity and accessories as directed. GE recommends wiping the cavity and cleaning accessories before use. First-use steps can be more specific: for example, the Tefal OF160870 instructions call for an empty heating run of 15–20 minutes and note that some initial smoke or odor may occur. That is guidance for that model, not a universal procedure. If smoke occurs during first use, consult your own manual rather than assuming it is normal. Choose settings and cookware for the job
Use the recipe and appliance manual together. Select the function, rack position, temperature, cookware, and timer they call for; preheat only when directed. Keep food and containers from touching the heating elements, and do not force oversized food or unapproved utensils into the cavity. Use only accessories approved for your appliance. Can you use aluminum foil?
Check your model’s manual before using foil, and follow its directions about placement. Do not cover the crumb tray or any part of the oven unless the manual expressly allows that use. One hosted countertop-oven manual warns that covering its crumb tray with foil can overheat the appliance; Panasonic, by contrast, describes a particular model-specific use of foil over the rack to catch ingredients. Keep flammable and meltable materials out
Do not place paper, cardboard, plastic, or other materials that could melt or catch fire inside the oven. Use heat-resistant oven mitts when handling hot trays or other materials; a Newell Brands manual gives that instruction for its applicable appliance. Newell Brands manual
Handle hot surfaces, food, and cleanup carefully
The exterior, rack, tray, and cooked food can remain hot during and after operation. Use oven mitts to handle hot items, and keep hands clear of the heating elements. GE warns that exterior surfaces may remain hot after use. GE first-use and safety guidance

- Switch off and unplug the oven.
- Let the appliance cool fully before cleaning.
- Follow the model’s cleaning directions, including how to remove and replace the crumb tray.
- For the Tefal OF160870, the instructions describe wiping the exterior with a damp sponge and mild detergent and avoiding aggressive cleaners and abrasive pads. Do not assume those details apply to other models.

Respond to smoke or a fire
If food smokes or catches fire, do not open the door or pour water onto the appliance. Follow the emergency instructions in your exact model’s manual and applicable local emergency guidance. Panasonic’s guidance for its named models says to keep the door closed, switch off and unplug the appliance, and not use water. Tefal gives similar instructions for the OF160870 and also describes smothering flames with a damp cloth. Do not apply that additional step to a different model unless its manual says to do so. Use time and preheating thoughtfully
Follow the recipe and appliance directions, and use the timer to stop cooking when the recipe is complete. Avoid unnecessary preheating when both the recipe and manual allow you to skip it; Tefal notes that preheating is not always needed depending on the recipe.
