Use a standing steamer only when steaming is allowed, keep the steamer moving over a hanging garment at the distance specified in its manual, and never use steam on an item marked “no steam” or “do not steam.” For ironing, use the lowest setting required by the most delicate fiber in a blend, begin with low-temperature garments, and use the reverse side or a press cloth when the label permits. The label overrides general appliance advice.
Why the care label comes first
A steamer and an iron are not interchangeable. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) care-label glossary gives distinct meanings to several instructions that are sometimes treated as suggestions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- “No steam” or “Do not steam” means steam in any form must not be used, including steam from a wand.
- “Steam only” means steaming without contact pressure. It does not authorize pressing the appliance against the fabric.
- “Do not iron” prohibits ironing, even if you plan to use a low temperature or a protective cloth.
- “Iron wrong side only” directs you to work on the inside of the garment.
- “Use press cloth” means placing a dry or damp cloth between the iron and the garment.
These definitions appear in the FTC’s care-label rule and glossary: FTC care-label rule. A press cloth can reduce direct heat and help prevent shine, but it cannot cancel a “do not iron” or “no steam” instruction.

Prepare the garment and appliance
Inspect the label and the garment
- Find the sewn-in or printed care label and read every symbol and phrase.
- Check for glued decorations, sequins, raised prints, waterproof coatings, leather or faux-leather panels, elastic, and loose construction. The available guidance does not establish one universal steaming or ironing method for all such finishes.
- Empty pockets, close zippers and fasteners where practical, and shake out the garment so folds are visible before you apply heat or moisture.
Set up on a stable surface
Follow the appliance manual for water type, filling, heat-up time, cleaning, and shutdown. Standing steam stations and irons differ in tank design, controls, and safe operating distances. For a steam station, Rowenta’s July 14, 2026 guide specifies a flat, stable, heat-resistant setup surface; use the equivalent surface recommended for your model: Rowenta steam-station guide.
Keep a test plan realistic
Some manufacturers or garment makers may recommend trying an inconspicuous area first. There is no single test protocol that is valid for every fiber, dye, coating, trim, and appliance. If a test area changes color, texture, sheen, or shape, stop rather than expanding the test.
How to use a standing garment steamer
A standing steamer is generally used with the garment hanging. It relaxes wrinkles with steam instead of a heated soleplate pressing directly on the cloth. That vertical arrangement is useful for hanging clothing and, where the appliance maker allows it, items such as curtains that are awkward to lay flat.

1. Confirm that steaming is allowed
Do not proceed when the label says “no steam” or “do not steam.” Under the FTC definition, “do not steam” covers steam in any form. A garment labeled “steam only” may be steamed without contact pressure, but the appliance manual still controls distance and technique.
2. Fill and heat the appliance according to its manual
Use only the water and filling procedure specified for your model. Do not infer water-treatment rules, tank capacity, or heat-up behavior from another brand or from a steam-station guide. Place the base where a tipped tank or hose cannot contact people, pets, electrical equipment, or the garment.
3. Hang the garment securely
Use a hanger that supports the shoulders without stretching them. Leave enough clearance for the hose and your movements. Fasten the garment enough to hold its shape, but do not trap steam against a closed layer if the label or manual warns against it.

4. Hold the fabric slightly taut
Rowenta’s steam-station instructions describe holding a hanging garment slightly taut and working from the top toward the bottom. Use that approach only within the distance and attachment instructions for your own appliance. Keep your free hand clear of the steam path; steam can burn skin even when the fabric appears cool.
5. Make continuous passes
Move the steam head continuously rather than leaving it in one place. Stationary steam can saturate a small area and expose it to heat longer than intended. Use overlapping top-to-bottom strokes, allowing the fabric to relax before making another pass. For delicate fabrics such as silk, Rowenta advises keeping the iron or steam head a few centimeters away; your manual may specify a different distance, which takes priority.
6. Treat details separately
Work around collars, cuffs, seams, pockets, prints, and decorations instead of assuming they tolerate the same exposure as the main fabric. If a trim reacts, develops a mark, or begins to distort, stop immediately and let the area cool before reassessing the label and maker’s instructions.
7. Let the garment dry and cool
After steaming, keep the item on its hanger until residual moisture has evaporated and the shape has settled. Do not fold or pack it while damp. If the appearance changes unexpectedly, stop using steam and seek garment-maker or professional-care guidance.
How to use an iron safely
1. Check ironing and steam permissions
Read the label for an iron symbol, a temperature level, a “no steam” instruction, a reverse-side instruction, or a press-cloth requirement. Never iron an item marked “do not iron.” If steam is prohibited, turn the iron’s steam function off even when the iron setting itself is allowed. The FTC’s glossary explains these distinctions: FTC care-label rule.

2. Prepare a suitable ironing surface
Use a stable, heat-resistant ironing board or another surface expressly intended for ironing. Keep the cord and steam hose, if present, away from edges where they could snag. Follow the appliance manual for water filling, soleplate cleaning, and automatic shutoff; those details are model-specific.

3. Sort garments from low to high heat
Philips advises starting with items that require the lowest temperature, such as synthetics, and then moving to fabrics that need more heat. An iron heats faster than it cools, so beginning with a high-heat garment can leave the soleplate too hot for the next item. Manufacturer guidance and your garment label should be read together: Philips iron instructions.
4. Choose the setting for the most delicate fiber
For a blend, set the iron for the fiber that tolerates the least heat. Philips states: “If the fabric consists of various kinds of fibres, always select the temperature required by the most delicate fibre, i.e. the lowest temperature.” Its example is a garment containing 60% polyester and 40% cotton: use the polyester setting and no steam. This is general manufacturer guidance; a specific label for your garment overrides it.
5. Iron from the safer side
When the label permits ironing, use the reverse side for silk, wool, and synthetic materials to reduce the chance of shiny patches. Place a dry or damp press cloth between the soleplate and the garment when the label calls for one or when the manufacturer recommends it. A cloth is a layer of protection, not permission to exceed the stated temperature or to iron a prohibited item.

Set the soleplate down smoothly, move it across the section, and lift or reposition it rather than leaving a hot soleplate resting on the fabric while you pause. Follow the garment’s construction: iron seams and edges without stretching them, and use the appliance’s pointed area only where the manual and label permit.
7. Finish and shut down
When the garment is smooth, return the iron to its heel or other designated rest position. Switch it off, unplug it if the manual requires that step, and empty or store water as directed. Leave the garment flat or hanging until it is cool and dry before wearing or storing it.

Do not select a temperature from fiber percentages alone. Use the label’s instruction first, then apply the conservative principle of matching the most delicate fiber. The table shows how to interpret the available manufacturer guidance without inventing numeric temperatures.

| Garment or fiber situation | Starting approach | Steam and contact precautions |
|---|---|---|
| 60% polyester / 40% cotton example | Philips’ example uses the polyester setting, because polyester is the more delicate fiber in that blend. | Use no steam in that example; defer to the garment label if it differs. |
| Silk | Use the label-permitted low setting and work from the reverse side when ironing is allowed. | For vertical steaming, keep the head the distance specified by the manual; Rowenta describes a few centimeters for delicate fabrics in its steam-station context. |
| Wool | Use the label-permitted setting and the reverse side where directed. | A press cloth may help prevent shiny patches when ironing, but it does not override a prohibition. |
| Synthetic material | Place it early in a low-to-high ironing sequence and use the label’s setting. | Avoid leaving the soleplate in contact while paused; use no steam when the label or blend guidance requires it. |
| Any blend with unclear instructions | Choose the lowest setting supported by the label or obtain the maker’s advice. | Do not guess that the heat-tolerant component makes the blend safe. |
Philips’ complete instructions are available at this manufacturer manual. They do not replace the care label attached to your specific garment.
Steamer or iron: which method fits the job?
The right choice depends first on the label, then on the finish you need. The comparison below summarizes what the cited instructions establish; it is not a product performance test.
| Decision point | Standing garment steamer | Iron |
|---|---|---|
| Garment position | Usually a securely hanging garment; follow the steamer’s manual. | Typically a garment laid on a stable, heat-resistant surface. |
| Contact and pressure | “Steam only” means steaming without contact pressure under the FTC glossary. | Uses a heated soleplate and may involve pressing; the label governs whether that is allowed. |
| Supported use in the cited guidance | Vertical steaming and refreshing hanging garments; Rowenta also discusses curtains and items not suited to laying flat. | Controlled temperature and steam settings for pressing; Philips supplies blend and reverse-side guidance. |
| Main damage control | Respect “no steam,” keep the head moving, and maintain the manual’s distance. | Respect “do not iron,” start with low heat, use the most delicate fiber’s setting, and use the reverse side or press cloth when appropriate. |
| When evidence is insufficient | Coated, embellished, structured, or otherwise unusual garments may need maker or professional advice. | The same caution applies when the label is missing, contradictory, or unclear. |
Preventing the most common damage patterns
Shiny or flattened patches
Shine can appear when a hot soleplate compresses or heats the surface. Reduce that risk by ironing from the reverse side for silk, wool, and synthetics when permitted, using the label’s temperature, and adding a press cloth when instructed. Never solve shine by raising the heat.
Water marks and over-wetting
Steam output, condensation, and water handling vary by appliance. Keep the head moving, follow the manual’s distance, and allow a steamed garment to dry fully before folding. If a spot darkens or rings, stop and check the garment maker’s care advice rather than repeatedly applying more steam.
Scorching or melting
Scorching risk rises when the iron is too hot for the fiber or left stationary. Sort low-temperature items first, select the most delicate fiber’s setting for blends, and lift the iron when pausing. Synthetic fibers can deform or melt; a low label-permitted setting and reverse-side work are safer than experimenting with higher heat.

Steam and pressure can relax or shift structured areas. Keep the garment supported, avoid pulling it out of shape, and work in small sections. If a shoulder, waistband, interfacing, or pleat changes shape, stop and let it cool before attempting another pass.

Damage to prints and decorations
Raised graphics, glued trims, sequins, and coated surfaces may not tolerate direct heat or steam. Treat each as a separate risk area, use only the method and side allowed by the label, and do not press directly on a decoration unless its instructions explicitly permit it.
Troubleshooting when something goes wrong
The garment still looks wrinkled
First confirm that the method is allowed and that the appliance reached operating temperature. For a steamer, rehang the item so the fabric is slightly taut and make moving passes at the manual’s distance. For an iron, verify that the setting matches the most delicate fiber and that the garment is on a stable surface. Do not compensate for poor setup by increasing heat beyond the label.
The steamer spits water
Stop directing it at the garment, place it safely, and consult the appliance manual for tank level, warm-up, hose position, and cleaning requirements. Water behavior is model-specific; do not assume that a procedure for one steam station applies to another.
The fabric changes color, texture, or sheen
Stop immediately and allow the area to cool. Do not continue testing larger sections. Record the label instructions and the appliance setting, then contact the garment maker or a professional cleaner for advice. The cited guidance does not establish that every delicate, coated, or embellished item can be safely recovered at home.
You cannot find a reliable label
Do not infer permission from the fiber’s appearance or from a similar garment. Seek the manufacturer’s care instructions or professional advice. If you choose to proceed after obtaining guidance, follow the exact temperature, steam, side, and distance instructions rather than a generic internet setting.
A repeatable decision checklist
- Read: Identify every “do not,” “no steam,” “steam only,” reverse-side, temperature, and press-cloth instruction.
- Choose: Use a steamer for a permitted hanging-garment treatment or an iron for a permitted pressed finish; never use either method against the label.
- Set up: Use a stable surface, correct water procedure, and the appliance manual’s heat-up and distance instructions.
- Start conservatively: For ironing, begin with low-temperature garments and use the most delicate fiber’s setting for blends.
- Control contact: Keep a steamer moving and an iron moving; use the reverse side or a press cloth when allowed.
- Watch: Stop at the first unexpected change in color, texture, shape, or sheen.
- Cool and store: Let the garment dry and cool, then shut down and maintain the appliance as its manual directs.
The safest result comes from treating the label as the governing instruction, using the appliance only within its manual, and choosing the least aggressive method that achieves the finish you need.
