To add website screenshots to a Flask app, have Flask validate a request, call a hosted screenshot API from the server, and return the image bytes with the MIME type the provider supplies. The provider runs the rendering browser; your Flask process handles the web request and response.
How the Flask-to-API flow works
A hosted screenshot API keeps browser rendering outside your Flask process. Your route receives a target URL and permitted capture settings, sends them to the provider with a server-side credential, then returns the provider’s response. This avoids operating Chromium in the Flask deployment, but it does not remove the need to secure the endpoint or account for provider latency and limits.
- Accept and validate: Read the URL and enforce your application’s destination policy.
- Capture remotely: Send an authenticated request with bounded options and a timeout.
- Return correctly: Send the image bytes with the provider’s actual content type, or return a controlled error.
Install Flask and the provider SDK
The example below uses ScreenshotAPI’s Python SDK, whose distribution package is screenshotapi-to and import module is screenshotapi. Its documentation specifies Python 3.8 or later. The Flask guide was last updated 2026-03-25; SDK details were accessed 2026-10-03. Check the provider’s current documentation for changes before deployment.
python -m pip install Flask screenshotapi-to
Set the API key in the server environment rather than in source code, a browser bundle, or a mobile app. ScreenshotAPI says its SDK sends the credential in an x-api-key header. For example, configure SCREENSHOTAPI_KEY through your deployment platform’s secret manager or environment settings.

Build a Flask screenshot route
This provider-specific example follows ScreenshotAPI’s documented SDK pattern: create a client, call screenshot(), and return result.image using result.content_type. The SDK documents a 60-second default request timeout; the example sets a shorter 30-second limit to illustrate explicit timeout control. Choose a value that fits your own service’s latency budget.
import os
from flask import Flask, Response, jsonify, request
from screenshotapi import ScreenshotAPI
app = Flask(__name__)
api_key = os.environ.get("SCREENSHOTAPI_KEY")
if not api_key:
raise RuntimeError("SCREENSHOTAPI_KEY must be set")
client = ScreenshotAPI(api_key, timeout=30.0)
@app.get("/screenshot")
def screenshot():
target = request.args.get("url")
if not target:
return jsonify(error="url is required"), 400
# Replace this with your application's destination and option policy.
if not target.startswith(("https://", "http://")):
return jsonify(error="url must use http or https"), 400
try:
result = client.screenshot({"url": target, "type": "webp"})
except Exception:
# Log a sanitized diagnostic server-side; do not expose provider details.
app.logger.exception("Screenshot provider request failed")
return jsonify(error="screenshot could not be created"), 502
return Response(result.image, mimetype=result.content_type)
The scheme check is only a minimal illustration, not sufficient SSRF protection. In production, parse the URL and enforce an allowlist or other explicit host policy. Reject loopback, private, link-local, and metadata-service destinations; account for DNS resolution and redirects so a permitted hostname cannot resolve or redirect to an internal address. The exact policy depends on your deployment and intended users.
The exception handler intentionally returns a generic message. For production, map known provider errors and timeouts to deliberate HTTP responses, log useful diagnostics without credentials or sensitive page URLs, and avoid returning raw provider exceptions to callers. Add authentication and rate limits if the endpoint is not intended to be public.

Run and call the route
With SCREENSHOTAPI_KEY set, start the development server using Flask’s CLI:
flask --app app run
Then request a screenshot from a trusted target:
curl --get 'http://127.0.0.1:5000/screenshot'
--data-urlencode 'url=https://example.com'
--output screenshot.webp
The route requests WebP and returns the provider’s declared MIME type. If you offer multiple formats, validate the requested format against a small allowlist and pass only those choices to the provider; do not let callers supply arbitrary provider parameters.
Return an image or a downloadable attachment
A Flask Response is appropriate when the route should return image bytes directly, as in the example. If you prefer a download disposition, wrap the bytes in an in-memory stream and use Flask’s file response helper:

from io import BytesIO
from flask import send_file
return send_file(
BytesIO(result.image),
mimetype=result.content_type,
as_attachment=True,
download_name="screenshot.webp",
)
Keep the content type aligned with the actual output. Hard-coding image/png is incorrect if a caller can request WebP or JPEG. Provider response contracts also differ: some APIs return bytes and metadata, while others may return a hosted URL or redirect. Follow the selected provider’s documented contract rather than combining snippets from different services.
Validate inputs and constrain capture work
A URL-taking screenshot endpoint is a network proxy, so it needs controls beyond ordinary query validation. Restrict destinations to the sites your product needs, and decide whether callers may request full-page shots, large viewports, long waits, selectors, or other expensive behavior. Expose only the options your application needs, with bounded values.

Handle failures without leaking provider details
Choose a predictable response contract for your own callers. A missing URL is a client error; a provider timeout or failure is a gateway/service error. If you distinguish quota exhaustion or authorization failures, translate them into a safe, stable message and preserve the detailed diagnostic only in protected server logs.
- Missing or malformed URL: Return HTTP 400 and explain the required input without making a provider request.
- Disallowed destination or option: Reject it before calling the provider. A 400 response is suitable for invalid input; 403 can be used when your policy treats it as forbidden.
- Provider timeout: Return a controlled 504 or service-specific error. Avoid automatic retries that can multiply slow work; retry only when appropriate and within a total request deadline.
- Provider outage or rejected request: Return a generic 502 or 503 as appropriate. Do not expose API keys, raw exception text, or internal response details.
- Quota or credential problem: Alert operators and return a non-sensitive service error. Do not tell an untrusted caller details that could expose account state.
Hosted API or direct Playwright?
A hosted API and direct browser automation solve related but different operational problems. With a hosted API, the provider operates rendering infrastructure and Flask makes an HTTP request. With Playwright, your application owns the browser process and deployment environment. Playwright’s Python documentation describes screenshots saved to a file or byte buffer, including full-page and element captures.
| Decision | Hosted screenshot API | Direct Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Browser operations | The provider operates rendering infrastructure; your Flask app makes an API request. | Your application operates the browser and its deployment environment. |
| Authenticated or interactive pages | Confirm the chosen provider supports the target page’s access method; the cited Flask guide does not establish signed-in flow support. | Can suit workflows that require driving a browser or handling an authenticated interaction, subject to your implementation. |
| Integration responsibility | Manage a key, request options, timeout, provider response contract, and vendor limits. | Manage browser lifecycle, navigation, capture options, and image handling. |
| Output | Depends on the vendor: bytes and metadata, a URL, or a redirect may be used. | Can save to a file or capture to a byte buffer; full-page and element screenshots are documented. |
| Cost and privacy | Check current pricing, quotas, data handling, and terms with the vendor. | Assess your own infrastructure cost and the sensitivity of target pages in your deployment. |
Choose a hosted API when operating a browser fleet is not part of your application’s requirements. Prefer direct automation when you need control over browser interactions or infrastructure and are prepared to operate it. Compare the chosen provider’s current terms, pricing, capture support, latency, and data practices; the cited documentation does not establish a universal best provider or cross-provider cost comparison.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF, and its API supports Python, cURL, Node.js, or a Flask server-side HTTP call. Before capture, it accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.
For Flask, keep the key in the server environment and call the API from the route. This is the documented Python request pattern; replace the example URL with a target that your application permits.
import os
import requests
from flask import Response, jsonify, request
@app.get("/screenshot-neo")
def screenshot_neo():
target = request.args.get("url")
if not target:
return jsonify(error="url is required"), 400
try:
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": os.environ["SCREENSHOTNEO_API_KEY"], "url": target},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
except requests.Timeout:
return jsonify(error="screenshot request timed out"), 504
except requests.RequestException:
app.logger.exception("ScreenshotNeo request failed")
return jsonify(error="screenshot could not be created"), 502
return Response(r.content, content_type=r.headers.get("Content-Type", "application/octet-stream"))
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. The service has 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
