The exact request and result handling depend on the API: it may return image bytes, a hosted image URL, or a later callback. Airtable’s Run a script action is unavailable on the Free plan, so check your plan before building the workflow.
Choose how the automation starts
An Airtable automation has a trigger and one or more actions. Choose the trigger that matches the event you want to capture:

- Start from Airtable: use a record-created, record-updated, or condition trigger when a change in a base should start the capture.
- Start from another service: use Airtable’s incoming webhook trigger when an external system should initiate the workflow.
An incoming webhook can also be useful as the return path for an API that finishes captures asynchronously. Airtable warns: “Remember that anyone who has the URL for your webhook trigger can trigger your automation.” Treat that URL as a secret and share it only with the service that needs it. Build the synchronous workflow
1. Prepare the record and destination fields
Store the page to capture in a URL field. Add fields for the outcome your workflow needs, such as capture status, completion time, and image URL or provider result reference. Decide in advance whether the API returns a hosted link or image data: those require different handling.

2. Configure the trigger and script inputs
Create an automation with the appropriate trigger, then add a Run a script action. In the script action’s input variables, pass the record’s target URL under a clear name such as pageUrl. Pass any other required capture settings as inputs rather than hard-coding them into the script where practical.
Validate the URL before sending it. Restrict it to the sites or URL patterns your workflow is intended to capture; a user-editable URL should not silently turn an automation into an unrestricted capture proxy. This is an application-level safeguard, not a built-in Airtable URL allowlist.
3. Call the provider with fetch()
Airtable documents fetch() for outbound requests in a Run a script automation. The endpoint, HTTP method, authentication, body, and response format come from the screenshot API’s documentation—not from a universal Airtable convention. The skeleton below shows where to connect those pieces; replace the marked provider-specific values with the API’s documented contract.

Follow the provider’s documented authentication method and Airtable’s current controls for sensitive values. Airtable describes this action as a background script; its integration guidance distinguishes it from client-side scripting, so the server-side automation call does not need a browser CORS workaround. 4. Store the response deliberately
Inspect the provider’s documented response schema, then map the fields you actually receive into Airtable fields. For a JSON response containing an image URL, return that URL from the script and use subsequent automation actions to update the originating record. If the provider returns binary image data instead, confirm that it documents a supported way to deliver or attach the file to Airtable; there is no universal binary-to-attachment procedure established by Airtable’s screenshot integration guidance.
Use an incoming webhook for external starts or asynchronous results
For an external start event, configure an Airtable When webhook received trigger and provide its generated URL to the calling service. For an API that returns a job identifier and completes later, configure the provider’s callback to send its result to an Airtable webhook URL, then use follow-on automation actions to locate or update the relevant record. Include a stable record identifier or job reference in the callback design so the result can be matched to the original request.

Protect webhook URLs as credentials: anyone who obtains the URL can trigger the automation. Check Airtable’s current plan-specific availability and limits for webhook triggers before relying on this flow.
What to verify before choosing a screenshot API
Request formats are provider-specific. The ScreenshotCenter instructions, for example, describe one vendor’s browser steps, screenshot request, and webhook result collection; they are an example, not a standard that applies to other services. Compare the items below in each provider’s documentation before committing your Airtable schema:
- Whether a request completes synchronously or returns a job for callback.
- Whether the result is image bytes, a hosted URL, or another reference.
- Authentication requirements and how to keep credentials out of records and logs.
- Support for full-page capture, viewport settings, and interactions needed by your target pages.
- Request and response schemas, rate limits, file-size limits, and error behavior.
- Regional processing and data-retention terms, plus price for the volume you expect.
These details are not interchangeable across APIs. A vendor’s sample should be treated as its own contract, not copied into a different provider’s script. See ScreenshotCenter’s documentation for its vendor-specific example.

Plan for Airtable limits and batch workflows
Airtable lists Run a script among automation actions and states that it is unavailable on the Free plan. Its incoming-webhook documentation describes availability across plan types with varying limitations. Check the current plan details and automation limits for your account before implementation. If an external process also enumerates records through Airtable’s Web API, list responses contain up to 100 records per page; paginate when a table exceeds that page size. This is relevant to bulk workflows and is separate from a single-record automation. See Airtable’s list-records API reference.

The script action is unavailable
Check the base’s plan and automation availability. Airtable says Run a script is not available on the Free plan.

The request fails or returns an HTTP error
Confirm the provider endpoint, method, required headers, authentication, and request body against that provider’s current documentation. Keep the HTTP status in the error message, and inspect provider error details without exposing API credentials.
The script receives no usable URL
Check the trigger record and the input-variable mapping. Ensure the script input name matches the name passed to input.config(), and reject missing or malformed values before making the external request.
The screenshot is missing from the record
Check whether the API response contains a URL, binary data, or an asynchronous job reference. A successful request does not guarantee that the response is an attachment-ready URL. For asynchronous jobs, verify the callback configuration and that the callback carries an identifier your workflow can use to find the intended record.

An external service can trigger the workflow unexpectedly
Limit access to the incoming webhook URL and rotate or replace it if it has been exposed. Airtable’s warning is direct: possession of the webhook URL is sufficient to trigger the automation.
