A screenshot API can capture a login-protected page if the browser behind the API receives authentication the site accepts. For a site that accepts a session cookie or authorization header, pass that credential using the provider’s documented request fields. If login requires interactive steps, use browser automation such as Playwright to sign in, save the browser state securely, navigate to the page, wait for its content, and capture it.
Choose the right authentication method
First identify how the target site authenticates you, and use only an account and session you are authorized to access. A screenshot request that supplies no valid authentication state will generally capture the login page instead of the protected content.

- Session cookie: Suitable when the site accepts a current cookie to identify an already authenticated session. The provider may require cookie name, value, domain, and path.
- HTTP Basic authentication: Works when the site protects the page with HTTP Basic credentials and the screenshot provider exposes a corresponding option.
- Authorization header: Useful for token-based access when the site accepts a header such as a bearer token.
- Interactive sign-in: Use browser automation if you must fill a login form, follow redirects, complete multiple steps, or preserve browser state.
These methods are not interchangeable. The target site’s authentication rules determine which one works, and provider request fields vary. Cloudflare’s Browser Run screenshot documentation, for example, documents cookies, HTTP Basic authentication, and token headers for its own endpoint; it does not establish that every screenshot API supports those options.

Use a hosted screenshot API when a request credential is enough
A hosted API is the simpler path when the provider can send the cookie or header the target expects. You do not manage the browser runtime directly, but you do depend on the provider’s supported parameters and must handle the credential securely.

Cloudflare Browser Run example
Cloudflare documents a POST request to its screenshot endpoint with the destination URL and a cookies array. Its cookie example includes a name, value, domain, and path. For HTTP Basic authentication it documents an authenticate object with username and password; for token authentication it describes setting an Authorization header with setExtraHTTPHeaders. The exact request schema and endpoint details are provider-specific, so check the current API reference before adapting an implementation.
The API token used to authorize a request to a hosted provider is separate from the cookie, password, or authorization token required by the target website. Keep the two credentials distinct in configuration and logs.

Use Playwright when login needs browser interaction
When the site requires signing in through its interface or needs browser state beyond a single request credential, automate the flow in a browser context. Playwright’s authentication guidance describes saving authentication state for reuse, and its Page API documents screenshot capture.
- Sign in: Launch a browser, open the login page, and complete the flow your authorized account normally uses.
- Save state: Save the authenticated context’s storage state to a protected file, then use it to create a new authenticated context in later runs.
- Navigate to the protected URL: Reuse the saved state in the same relevant site origin and load the target page.
- Wait for the page to be ready: Prefer a selector that appears when the protected content is usable. If the page loads data asynchronously, a successful navigation response alone may be too early.
- Capture and verify: Save a viewport, full-page, or element screenshot as appropriate, then inspect that it shows the expected signed-in content.
Playwright’s usual storage-state workflow covers cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and virtual WebAuthn passkeys. Session storage is domain-specific and is not automatically persisted by the standard workflow; if the application depends on it, save and restore it explicitly. Treat saved state as a credential: it can contain cookies or headers that let someone impersonate the account. Keep it out of source control and restrict access.

Wait for the authenticated content, not just navigation
Dashboards, charts, and other client-rendered pages may continue loading after the initial document response. Set a suitable timeout and navigation wait condition, then use a page-specific readiness check when possible. Cloudflare documents navigation options including gotoOptions with waitUntil and a timeout, along with viewport sizing and full-page or CSS-selector capture options. In Playwright, wait for a meaningful content selector before calling the screenshot method.
Choose the capture area based on what you need: a viewport image for the currently visible screen, a full-page capture for a long page, or a specific element for a focused result. A successful API response only indicates that the request completed; it does not prove the image contains the intended authenticated page.

Protect credentials and screenshots
- Do not put passwords, cookies, bearer tokens, or saved browser state in public code, repositories, or routine logs.
- Supply only the credential needed for the target and limit who or what can access it.
- Refresh or replace expired session state rather than repeatedly capturing a login or session-expired page.
- Check whether the screenshot exposes personal, account, or confidential information before storing or sharing it.
