How to Use a Screenshot API Response in a Make HTTP Module

Learn how to configure Make HTTP for a screenshot API, inspect its response, and route URLs, parsed JSON, or image data to the correct next step.

In Make, configure HTTP > Make a request with the screenshot provider’s endpoint and authentication, run it once, then inspect the output bundle. What you map next depends on the response: map a returned image URL into HTTP > Download a file; for JSON, enable Parse response to expose fields; for raw image data, check how Make represents it and what the receiving module accepts. A URL, base64 text, and binary file data are different formats and are not interchangeable.

Set up the screenshot request in Make

The screenshot provider determines the endpoint, authentication method, parameter names, and response format. Use its API documentation rather than assuming all screenshot APIs behave alike. Make’s current HTTP documentation covers the request module and its settings: Make HTTP documentation.

  1. Add the request module. In your scenario, add HTTP > Make a request.
  2. Configure the request. Set the method and endpoint, then add authentication, headers, query parameters, or a body as required by the provider. Make recommends entering authentication details in its dedicated Credentials field.
  3. Set response parsing appropriately. For a JSON response, set Parse response to Yes so Make can structure fields for mapping.
  4. Run the module once. Inspect its output bundle. Make says mappable items become available after the module has run once; the actual field names come from the API’s response schema.

Make HTTP v4 only permits secure HTTPS connections and rejects unverified self-signed certificates. Its current documentation also describes a timeout setting from 1 to 300 seconds and automatic following of up to 10 redirects. Choose settings that suit the provider and workflow.

Map the response according to its format

The API returns a screenshot URL

Map the URL from the request output into HTTP > Download a file. That module downloads the file and exposes file data for later modules. Then map the downloaded file data—not the original URL—into a destination that expects an uploaded or binary file.

The API returns JSON

Set Parse response to Yes, run the request once, and inspect the structured output. Map the field that the provider documents as containing the screenshot URL, image data, or other result. Do not guess a field name: providers use different response schemas.

The API returns image data directly

Inspect the captured output and the next module’s accepted input type before mapping anything. If the response is binary file data, connect it as file data where supported. If it is a base64-encoded string, it may need decoding or conversion before a destination can accept it. The precise conversion depends on the provider’s response and the receiving module; the available Make documentation does not establish a universal mapping for every image response.

Legacy HTTP module behavior

If a scenario uses Make’s legacy HTTP app, its documentation distinguishes raw, unparsed response data from parsed output. Enable response parsing and manually run the module once so Make can recognize JSON or XML fields for later mapping: Legacy HTTP documentation.

Choose error and timing behavior

Make’s current HTTP module includes an option to return an error for 4xx or 5xx responses. Decide whether those should stop the route or be handled by an error path, based on how your scenario should respond to a failed capture. Set the timeout within the documented 1–300-second range to allow for the provider’s expected response time without letting a stalled request hold up the scenario indefinitely. Redirect following is automatic up to 10 redirects.

Troubleshoot common mapping problems

  • No fields appear for mapping: confirm Parse response is enabled for JSON, then run the module once and inspect its bundle.
  • The next module rejects the mapped value: check whether the value is a URL, base64 text, or file data. If it is a URL, use HTTP > Download a file first; if it is image data, match its representation to the destination’s input requirements.
  • The request fails before returning a screenshot: recheck the provider’s method, endpoint, credentials, headers, and required parameters. Make’s HTTP v4 requires HTTPS and will reject unverified self-signed certificates.
  • The provider returns an HTTP error: inspect the status and response details, verify the request against the provider’s documentation, and configure Make’s 4xx/5xx error behavior to fit your scenario.
  • The request times out or redirects unexpectedly: review the provider’s response timing, set an appropriate timeout, and check whether the request exceeds Make’s limit of 10 followed redirects.
  • You are using the legacy app and only see raw output: turn on parsing and manually run the module to expose recognizable JSON or XML fields.

Consider Make’s native screenshot actions

Make’s integration listing for HTML/CSS to Image includes Create a Screenshot of a URL and Get an Image. These are alternatives to consider if you only need to create or retrieve a screenshot within Make. The listing does not establish feature parity, pricing, or a provider-specific comparison, so check whether the action’s capture options and output fit your workflow: HTML/CSS to Image and HTTP integration listing.
