A Raspberry Pi can send a continuous nature-sounds broadcast to YouTube Live: provide audio from recordings you own or are licensed to use, pair it with a still image or visual loop, and send the resulting audio-and-video stream from an encoder such as FFmpeg. Raspberry Pi Ltd has documented a Pi-to-YouTube FFmpeg workflow, but its example dates to 2017; it is not proof that a current Pi model will run this workload reliably for 24/7. Test the exact board, software, audio source and network you plan to use.
Choose how the nature sounds will reach the stream
There are two practical source paths. Neither is established as better by the available platform documentation; choose based on whether the sound must be live and what equipment and rights you have.

| Source | What it means | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Looped recordings | Play audio recordings repeatedly alongside a still image or visual loop. | Use audio you created or have permission to broadcast and archive. Check that loop transitions are acceptable and that the files work with your chosen encoder. |
| Live outdoor capture | Feed ambience from a microphone or audio interface into the encoder. | This is genuinely live capture, but it adds outdoor placement, capture hardware and environmental variables. Compatibility of any particular microphone or interface with a particular Pi setup is not established here. |
A Raspberry Pi is the encoder host, not a guarantee of an end-to-end recording setup. If you choose live capture, verify the audio input path on the actual board and operating system. If you choose recordings, verify the file playback and loop behavior before scheduling a long broadcast.

- A Raspberry Pi and a working network connection. No current model-specific performance recommendation is established for this continuous, audio-first use.
- An audio source: original or properly licensed recordings, or a live input device that you have verified works with your Pi setup.
- A visual source, such as a still image or visual loop, so the encoder sends both audio and video.
- An encoder such as FFmpeg. Raspberry Pi Ltd published a Docker-based FFmpeg-to-YouTube example on 30 May 2017; treat it as a historical demonstration, not a current compatibility guide or reliability test.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, and access to YouTube Studio to create or select a stream and copy its server URL and stream key.
Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Create or select the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or select an existing one. Open its stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains this connection process: YouTube Help: set up a live stream with an encoder.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public script or share a screenshot that exposes it. Use the key only in the encoder configuration on a device you control.
- Configure the output protocol and audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which Google describes as RTMP carried through an SSL connection. Use the server address YouTube currently supplies for your stream and confirm the encoder is configured for the secure endpoint. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate encoding. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate; it lists AAC or MP3 for audio. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee of performance from a particular Pi, FFmpeg build or microphone. See YouTube Help: live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions and Google for Developers: RTMPS ingestion.
- Supply both audio and video. Arrange for your recording or live input to feed the audio track, and provide a still image or visual loop as the video track. The sources do not establish a tested FFmpeg command, a preferred current Pi model or a proven microphone for this particular setup, so validate the chosen input and encoder configuration on your own hardware rather than copying an assumed command.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start the stream from the Pi and confirm that YouTube receives the preview with the expected picture and sound. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to start the broadcast from Live Control Room after the preview appears. Follow the current controls shown in Studio for the selected stream.
Plan for a genuinely continuous broadcast
Do not treat one stream as an indefinite archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a continuous channel, plan how the broadcast will be divided or restarted and verify current behavior in YouTube Studio before relying on an individual stream lasting longer than that archive window. The 12-hour figure concerns automatic archiving; it should not be read as a guarantee that a Pi, encoder, connection or YouTube broadcast will remain uninterrupted for that long. See YouTube Help: archive live streams.

Test recovery instead of assuming it
The available sources do not establish automatic recovery after power, network or YouTube interruptions for a current Pi-and-FFmpeg setup. Test what happens after a brief network loss and an encoder restart before relying on the channel as always-on. Decide how you will notice a failed broadcast and restore it, and keep the stream key private while making any recovery changes.
Keep rights and channel policies in view
Use nature recordings you made or have permission to broadcast and archive; the sound of a natural environment does not by itself establish rights to a recording someone else made. YouTube’s copyright guidance and channel policies can affect live broadcasts and archived videos, so review the current rules for the specific material and channel before going live. No particular recording’s rights status is established here.

Troubleshooting the Pi-to-YouTube workflow
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder preview | Server URL, stream key, selected stream, network or encoder connection settings. | Compare the encoder destination and key with the current values in YouTube Studio. Confirm that the encoder is using the stream selected in Studio and the recommended RTMPS endpoint where available. |
| The preview appears, but there is no sound | Audio input selection, file playback, track routing or audio encoding. | Check that the chosen recording or capture device is producing audio at the encoder, then confirm the stream’s audio codec and stereo settings. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo. |
| Live ambience is missing or inconsistent | Capture hardware, input compatibility, placement or environmental conditions. | Test the microphone or interface with the exact Pi and software before broadcasting. No device-specific compatibility recommendation is established for this workload. |
| The stream stops after an interruption | Power, network, encoder or platform reconnection behavior. | Reproduce the interruption during a test and determine how the encoder and YouTube Studio behave. Automatic recovery for this setup is not established; plan a manual restart or another tested recovery process. |
| A long broadcast is not archived as expected | Stream duration and current YouTube archiving behavior. | YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Check the current Live Control Room status and plan shorter segments if archiving each broadcast is important. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded nature-sounds videos playing rather than a live microphone feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer, OBS or home connection staying on. It supports uploaded video exactly as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and does not broadcast a live camera or microphone feed. Start a free day at StreamNeo registration.
