How to Use a Radio Station Website Player as Audio for a YouTube Livestream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can capture a radio station’s website player in OBS and send its sound to YouTube, but do not rebroadcast it unless you have permission covering YouTube livestreaming and the relevant territory. Public access to a player is not permission to retransmit its programming. Once rights are cleared, choose desktop or application audio capture, test the sound in an unlisted stream, and monitor YouTube’s preview before going public.

First, get permission to rebroadcast the station

Ask the station and any relevant rights holders for permission that specifically covers livestreaming the programming on YouTube and the territories where it will be available. If you intend to leave the YouTube stream replayable, confirm that the permission covers the archived replay too. A station website playing audio for listeners does not, by itself, grant those rights.

YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party matches. A detected match can trigger a warning and placeholder image, then interruption or termination; even licensed content can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Before streaming, ask the rights holder whether it can allowlist your YouTube channel. YouTube says licensed streamers should ask the content owner to do this; a license alone may not prevent an automated interruption.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose what OBS should capture

The right setup depends on your operating system and OBS version. Capturing all desktop output is straightforward, but can also send notifications and other computer sounds to viewers. Capturing only the browser or player isolates the station audio more cleanly when your setup supports it.

Capture choice When it helps Watch out for
Desktop audio Use when you want the computer’s output, including the station player, in the stream. Notifications and unrelated system sounds may also be captured.
Single application audio Use when you want to isolate the browser or player from other desktop output. OBS documents this option on macOS 13 (Ventura) or later with OBS 30 or later. Make sure the chosen application is the one playing the station.
Audio-routing software May be needed for older macOS configurations that lack the newer native capture workflow. It adds a routing step; verify the signal reaches OBS and is not also captured through another source.

OBS documents macOS capture options in its macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide and device capture in its Audio Sources guide. The cited documentation does not establish a complete current Linux procedure, so Linux users should check current OBS and distribution-specific guidance rather than assume the macOS or Windows steps apply unchanged.

Set up and test the stream in OBS

  1. Open the station player. On the computer running OBS, start the station’s website player and confirm you can hear it. If you plan to capture all desktop output, silence or disable notifications and other sounds that should not go out to viewers.
  2. Check OBS’s default audio devices. OBS’s Quick Start Guide says desktop audio and a microphone are captured by default, and that devices can be selected manually. Open the audio settings and confirm that the intended output device is selected and that desktop audio is not disabled.
  3. Use a macOS application capture if appropriate. On macOS 13 or later with OBS 30 or later, add a macOS Audio Capture source and choose desktop audio or the station-playing application. For earlier macOS configurations, OBS describes using additional audio-routing software in its macOS guide.
  4. On Windows or macOS, add a device source if needed. In the scene’s Sources panel, add an Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source and choose the relevant device, as applicable to your setup. If that same device is already enabled as a global audio source, disable one of the two captures. OBS warns that capturing the same device both ways can cause echo.
  5. Check the OBS mixer. Start playback and verify the relevant audio meter moves. Confirm the source is not muted. Listen to the outgoing mix so you catch silence, distortion, unintended sounds, or doubled audio before the public broadcast.
  6. Run an unlisted test. Set the YouTube stream visibility to unlisted for the test, start the stream, and check the YouTube preview and audio—not just the sound you hear locally. YouTube recommends testing and continuously monitoring audio and video quality in its live streaming tips.
  7. Go public only after the test works. Confirm the stream is accessible, the station audio is audible in the YouTube preview, and your permission covers the planned broadcast. Continue monitoring while live.

What to expect from copyright checks

YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including another copyrighted live broadcast. A stream containing radio programming may therefore receive a warning or placeholder even if its audio capture is technically correct. If you have a license, ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel before relying on the stream to remain uninterrupted.

Creator Music is not a substitute for live-stream rights: YouTube’s current usage guidance says Creator Music tracks are for long-form videos, not livestreams. YouTube’s rights-holder guidance says paid Creator Music licenses were deprecated starting August 10, 2026, with gratis-license offerings the focus. Availability and terms can change; check YouTube Studio and the current Creator Music licensing guidance before relying on it.

YouTube describes copyright-safe music as material in the public domain or used with the copyright owner’s permission. A label such as “free” does not establish that a track is safe to rebroadcast, and a platform claim can still arise. See YouTube’s tips to find safe music.

Troubleshoot missing or poor audio

  • The OBS meter does not move: Check that the station is playing, the correct desktop or application device is selected, and the source is not muted. If using application capture, verify that OBS is targeting the application actually playing the audio.
  • The meter moves, but YouTube is silent: Check the YouTube preview, the stream’s audio output, and that the captured source is routed to the active stream mix. Test again with an unlisted stream before going public.
  • You hear an echo or doubled station audio: Look for the same device captured both as a global audio source and as a scene source. Disable one capture route; OBS warns that duplicate device capture can create echo.
  • Viewers hear notifications or other computer sounds: You are likely capturing all desktop output. Silence notifications or switch to single-application capture where supported.
  • YouTube displays a copyright warning or placeholder: This is a rights or matching issue, not a desktop-audio setting. Stop if you do not have permission. If you are licensed, contact the rights holder about allowlisting your channel; YouTube may interrupt or terminate a stream after a match.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it does not capture a radio station’s live website player or go live from a camera. For a separate, rights-cleared recording that you want to loop, upload it, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
