You can make a recognized controller feel closer to a PlayStation 2 layout by configuring its buttons in Steam Input for each game. Steam does not document a universal preset called “PS2,” and remapping cannot add native gamepad support to a game that lacks it. If you mean plugging in an original PS2 controller, that is a separate adapter-compatibility question: Steam’s guidance cited here does not confirm that any particular PS2-to-USB adapter will work.
What a “PS2-style” layout means in Steam
For most players, this means arranging a controller’s face buttons, shoulder controls, sticks, and directional pad to match familiar PlayStation-era actions. Steam Input lets you assign game commands to physical controls. Its flexible Button Pad and Directional Pad styles can also send keyboard or mouse commands when needed. Set up a familiar layout for a game
- Connect your controller and check the game’s support. Start Steam and confirm that the controller is recognized. Check the game’s Steam store page for its controller-support level. Full Controller Support means the game can be downloaded, launched, and played using only a controller. - Open the game’s controller configuration in Steam. Steam’s support guidance covers configuring controls, but the sources do not establish a single current click path for every client version or interface. Use the controller-layout or configuration option shown for the selected game in your Steam client.
- Assign controls to the game’s actions. Select a physical button or direction and choose the corresponding game action. Map the face buttons and shoulder controls according to the game’s prompts and the arrangement you prefer. Configure sticks and the directional pad as well; do not assume that a button map alone will provide the analog movement or camera control the game expects.
- Choose the right kind of command. If the game supports controllers, assign gamepad commands. If it does not, Steam’s flexible input styles can map controls to keyboard or mouse commands as a manual workaround. That can suit simple actions, but it may feel unnatural for analog movement or camera control. Understand controller and game compatibility
Steam Big Picture lists Xbox, DualShock 4, DualSense, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers as supported categories. Steam says, “Third party controllers often work, but are not officially supported.” That is not a guarantee for every third-party device, and the guidance does not establish support for an original PS2 controller connected through an adapter. Troubleshoot a layout that does not work
- Check whether Steam Overlay works. Steam says the overlay is important to Steam Controller functionality. Test it with the controller’s Steam button or Shift+Tab, and make sure the overlay is enabled for the game.
- Try a community configuration. If your custom assignments fail, load a community layout for that game and adjust it to your preferred arrangement.
- Check for conflicting programs. Steam recommends disabling conflicting software as a test. Restart the Steam client and test the layout again.
- Verify that the command type matches the game. A gamepad command needs a game that supports gamepad input. If the game lacks that support, try keyboard or mouse assignments only where they provide a usable substitute.
