A --proxy-server launch argument applies to the browser process; to route pages differently, use separate BrowserContexts with proxyServer where your installed Puppeteer version and browser protocol support it. If they do not, launch a separate browser process for each proxy.

BrowserContexts isolate cookies and cache, create and own their pages, and keep popups opened by a page in that page’s parent context. They are useful for separating page state as well as proxy routes, but do not assume that a browser-wide launch argument can vary between pages.

Use a different proxy for each BrowserContext
The current Puppeteer Next API reference documents proxyServer and proxyBypassList in BrowserContextOptions. The stable 25.12.0 API reference does not list this option in the same way; the 25.12.0 changelog does describe proxy support for incognito BrowserContexts under BiDi. Confirm that the API exists in your installed release and that your chosen protocol supports it before relying on this pattern.

Check the route before scaling up
- Check the installed Puppeteer type definitions or release documentation for
BrowserContextOptions.proxyServer. - Run a small request from each context to a destination that reports the observed public IP, and verify that each context exits through the intended proxy.
- Repeat with the browser protocol and browser version you plan to deploy. Puppeteer documents supported browser versions; align them when investigating routing issues.
Fallback: launch one browser process per proxy
If context-level routing is unavailable or does not work with your release and protocol, set the proxy when launching each browser instance. Each process and its pages then use that process’s proxy configuration.

The trade-off is operational: separate processes are easier to reason about when context proxying is unsupported, but require managing more browser instances. The documentation cited here does not establish a universal performance difference.

Handle HTTP proxy authentication separately
For a proxy that uses HTTP authentication, Puppeteer documents page.authenticate({ username, password }). Set credentials on the page before navigation:

await page.goto('https://example.com');This is specifically for HTTP authentication; check your proxy’s authentication scheme rather than assuming all proxy credentials work this way. Puppeteer turns request interception on behind the scenes to implement authentication, which may affect performance.

Troubleshoot proxy routing
- Different pages appear to share one route: If the proxy was supplied through
--proxy-server, it is configured for the browser process. Use supported context-level proxy settings or separate browser processes. proxyServeris missing or rejected: Confirm the installed release’s API and types. The Next reference and stable 25.12.0 reference do not provide identical evidence for this option; test with your actual protocol.- A context request does not use its intended proxy: Verify the observed outbound IP with a routing check, then confirm protocol and browser compatibility. Puppeteer’s supported-browser documentation pairs releases with browser versions.
- Authentication fails: Check that the endpoint uses HTTP authentication and that credentials are correct;
page.authenticate()is not documented here as a general solution for every proxy authentication method. - Authenticated requests are slower: Account for the request interception Puppeteer enables to implement
page.authenticate(); no fixed performance impact is established.

Popups belong to their parent BrowserContext, so they follow that context rather than getting an independent route.
