How to Use a Portable Generator Safely at a Tailgate

Keep a portable generator outdoors, more than 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents, and far enough from the vehicle that exhaust cannot enter. An open tailgate is not protection from carbon monoxide.

Run a portable generator outdoors, more than 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents, with its exhaust aimed away from buildings and people. Keep it well away from your car or SUV, too: an open tailgate does not stop carbon monoxide (CO) from entering, and the CDC warns that exhaust can be drawn into a vehicle when only the tailgate is open. Never run a generator inside a vehicle, garage, or other enclosed space.

Where to place a generator at a tailgate

Choose an outdoor location more than 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents, and direct the exhaust away from buildings people could enter. Keep the generator away from the vehicle’s tailgate, windows, and vents as well; do not position it so exhaust can reach people or enter the vehicle. The CDC’s 20-foot guidance is for openings such as doors, windows, and vents, not a guarantee for every crowded tailgate layout or wind condition. Follow venue rules and the generator’s manual, and choose another power plan if you cannot keep exhaust away from occupied areas.

The CDC specifically warns that when only a car or SUV tailgate is open, generator exhaust can be pulled into the vehicle. Opening vehicle windows or vents to create airflow does not make it safe to put a generator close to the vehicle.

What not to do

  • Do not run the generator inside the car, SUV, trunk, garage, shed, or another enclosed or partly enclosed space. Opening a door, window, or tailgate does not provide enough ventilation to prevent lethal CO buildup.
  • Do not rely on seeing or smelling exhaust. CO is colorless and odorless; it can cause sudden illness and death.
  • Do not refuel a running generator. Turn it off and let it cool as directed in its manual.
  • Keep people away from hot surfaces and exhaust.

Use the generator and electrical equipment as its manual directs

Before operating, read the specific generator’s manual, labels, and warnings. Follow its instructions for setup, electrical connections, maintenance, and weather. CPSC advises following the manufacturer’s guidance about shock hazards in inclement weather; weather precautions vary by machine, and the manual may specify a noncombustible shelter or require waiting for rain to pass. Do not improvise a cover or operate in conditions the manual prohibits.

The U.S. CPSC identifies the main generator hazards as CO poisoning from engine exhaust, electric shock or electrocution, fire, and burns. Its Portable Generator Safety Alert (2017) gives additional precautions.

Alarms and automatic shutoff are backup safeguards

Consider a generator with a CO shutoff feature and a battery-powered or battery-backup CO alarm. CDC and CPSC recommend CO alarms, and CPSC advises looking for generators with CO shutoff. Follow the alarm maker’s placement and operating instructions. Neither an alarm nor automatic shutoff replaces safe outdoor placement, separation from openings, or directing exhaust away from people and buildings.

What to do if CO exposure is possible

If anyone feels ill or CO exposure is suspected, leave the area for fresh air immediately and seek emergency help as appropriate. Do not wait for an alarm or for symptoms to become severe: CO cannot be detected by sight or smell.

How serious is generator-related CO poisoning?

The U.S. CPSC’s Carbon Monoxide Information Center, accessed in 2026, says more than 200 people die annually in the United States from accidental, non-fire CO poisoning associated with consumer products, with more than 100 deaths linked to portable generators. These are agency-rounded annual figures, not a count specific to tailgating. In a 2026 winter safety release, CPSC estimated about 750 generator-associated CO poisoning deaths over 2012–2022; that is an estimate for the full period, not an annual total. CPSC’s 2026 release provides the period estimate.
