To connect a Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED to a phone hotspot, turn on the hotspot, then select its Wi-Fi network on the console and enter the password. Nintendo supports mobile hotspots, but says connection quality can vary with signal strength.

Connect your Switch to a phone hotspot

  1. Turn on the phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot. On an iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot and configure Personal Hotspot and its Wi-Fi password. On Android, enable Wi-Fi Hotspot in Quick Settings or the phone’s hotspot settings, then note the network name and password. Android menu names vary by manufacturer and device. Apple’s Personal Hotspot instructions and Google’s Android instructions provide device-specific guidance.
  2. Open the Switch’s internet settings. From the HOME Menu, choose System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings.
  3. Select your phone’s network. Find the hotspot’s network name (SSID) in the available networks list and select it.
  4. Enter the hotspot password. Use the password shown or configured in the phone’s hotspot settings, then wait for the Switch to report the connection result.
  5. Confirm the connection. A successful connection means the Wi-Fi setup is complete. Online performance still depends on the phone’s cellular connection and reception. Nintendo lists mobile hotspots as usable wireless internet sources for Switch systems.

If your phone is an iPhone

Personal Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular data connection. It may not be available with every carrier, and additional fees or device limits can depend on the carrier and iPhone model. If the Switch has trouble connecting, try Settings > Personal Hotspot > Maximize Compatibility. Apple notes that this can help another device connect, but may reduce performance; it is not a guaranteed fix.

If your phone is Android

Enable the Wi-Fi hotspot, then connect from the Switch using the displayed hotspot name and password. Android settings differ among manufacturers, so use the instructions for your specific phone if the controls are not where expected. Carrier plans may restrict tethering or charge extra.

Troubleshoot common hotspot problems

The hotspot does not appear on the Switch

  • Make sure the phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot is enabled and available to nearby devices, then scan again from System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings.
  • Keep the phone near the console while connecting.
  • Check that you enabled Wi-Fi hotspot rather than Bluetooth or USB tethering; those options do not appear as a Wi-Fi network for the Switch.

The Switch sees the network but will not connect

  • Check the password in the phone’s hotspot settings and enter it again carefully.
  • If the phone is an iPhone, try Maximize Compatibility under Settings > Personal Hotspot. This option may reduce performance.

The connection is slow or unstable

  • Check the phone’s cellular reception where you are using the Switch. Nintendo cautions that mobile-hotspot connection quality can vary with signal strength.
  • Check whether other devices or apps are using the phone’s connection.
  • The Switch supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Whether you can choose or change the hotspot band depends on the phone model and its settings.

The hotspot turns off or stops sharing

Check the phone’s hotspot and power-saving settings, and refer to its current manufacturer instructions. Google recommends plugging in devices while tethering to help extend battery life.
