How to Use a Linux systemd Service to Restart a YouTube FFmpeg Stream

Use systemd to restart FFmpeg after qualifying failures, then confirm the stream itself is healthy in YouTube Live Control Room.

Run FFmpeg in the foreground as a systemd service, then set Restart=on-failure so systemd attempts to start it again after a qualifying failure. This can recover from a process exit, but it does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream: verify the service logs and YouTube Live Control Room separately.

What systemd can—and cannot—recover

A systemd restart policy acts when the service process exits or fails in a way covered by the selected policy. With Restart=on-failure, systemd restarts after a nonzero exit and certain abnormal failures. It does not restart a service that an administrator deliberately stopped with systemctl stop. The systemd.service manual documents restart conditions, delays, and start-rate limiting.

This is process recovery, not a guarantee of broadcast recovery. If FFmpeg stays alive while its input or output is unusable, systemd may have no process exit to act on. Even when systemd starts a fresh FFmpeg process, check whether YouTube is ingesting it and whether the live stream is healthy.

Create a systemd unit for FFmpeg

Keep FFmpeg in the foreground so it remains the service’s main process. Use the actual FFmpeg executable path, input file, encoding arguments, and YouTube ingest destination for your setup. The following is an illustrative template, not a tested FFmpeg command; replace every example path, user, and destination.

Use the current YouTube destination

For an encoder-based broadcast, YouTube provides a server URL and stream key in Live Control Room. Use the values for the intended live setup, not a stale or copied example. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to enter those values. Never publish a real stream key in a public unit file, article, or support post; restrict access to any file containing it or use an appropriate secret-injection method.

If you want to use RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS ingest address shown by YouTube and use it only if your installed FFmpeg build supports that protocol. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. The example’s RTMP address is deliberately a placeholder, not a recommendation to use that literal URL.

Choose a restart delay for your deployment

RestartSec=5s in the example means systemd waits five seconds before its next restart attempt. It is only a sample value, not a universal recovery guarantee. Choose a delay suitable for your service and consider systemd’s start-rate limiting: repeated failures can cause further restart requests to be limited. Review the installed systemd documentation and your operational needs before tuning the delay or limits.

Load, enable, and inspect the service

  1. Save the unit as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service, adapting the example command and protecting any credentials.

  2. Reload unit definitions and enable the service to start at boot while starting it now:

    sudo systemctl daemon-reload
    sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ffmpeg.service
  3. Check the service state and follow its logs:

    systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service
    journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -f
  4. Check YouTube Live Control Room for ingest and stream status. A running process or an active systemd unit alone does not establish that the broadcast is reaching viewers.

    • 2 × micro HDMI ports supproting up to 4Kp60 video resolution
    • Micro SD card slot for loading operating system and data storage

After changing the unit, reload definitions and deliberately restart the service with sudo systemctl restart youtube-ffmpeg.service. A deliberate administrator stop is not a valid test of automatic restart behavior because systemd suppresses restart when its own stop operation terminates the process. To test recovery, use a controlled failure during a non-public test stream, then verify both that a new process started and that YouTube reports the expected receiving state.

Systemd recovery versus FFmpeg-level recovery

These mechanisms address different failure layers. Systemd can restart FFmpeg after a qualifying process failure. FFmpeg-level input or output recovery options, where suitable, operate inside the encoder process and depend on the FFmpeg version and which connection failed. If FFmpeg remains running but the output connection is broken, a systemd policy triggered by process exit may not help. Do not assume an input-reconnect setting repairs an output connection, or that a restarted process resumes at the exact point of interruption.

Exact FFmpeg recovery flags and version-specific tuning are not included here; consult documentation for the FFmpeg build you actually run before adding such options. In either approach, observe the process and the YouTube ingest state rather than treating one as proof of the other.

Troubleshoot restarts that do not restore the stream

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a Linux machine or VPS to be responsible for keeping the encoder running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos as a YouTube live stream. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; cards are available worldwide. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
