It does not start a YouTube broadcast by itself: OBS still needs a configured stream key and an explicit start action. This guide sets up the login launch, explains the limits, and shows how to connect OBS to YouTube.
What a LaunchAgent will—and will not—do
A LaunchAgent is a per-user launchd job. It runs in that user’s login session, so it is appropriate for opening OBS after you sign in—not for launching OBS before login or as a system-wide service. Apple describes a user agent as specific to a logged-in user and active only while that user is logged in (Apple’s launchd guide).

Opening the app is separate from going live. The LaunchAgent does not prove that OBS has loaded the intended scene collection, that camera or microphone permissions are granted, that the stream key is correct, or that YouTube is receiving a broadcast. Treat automatic app launch and starting a livestream as separate tasks.
Check your Mac, OBS installation, and YouTube access
Confirm the OBS app path
OBS’s official Mac installation instructions use a macOS DMG and move OBS into Applications; Homebrew is also offered as an installation option (OBS macOS installation). Before writing a LaunchAgent, confirm the actual app path on your Mac. A typical DMG installation is /Applications/OBS.app, but do not use that path blindly if you installed or moved the app elsewhere.

Check capability against your actual production
OBS’s requirements page lists Intel or Apple silicon, OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics, and macOS 11 or later, while warning that compatible hardware is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording adequately. CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity (OBS system requirements). The page is dated 2021, so check the current requirements for the OBS version and macOS release you use. Run OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard and test your actual scenes rather than assuming a Mac mini can sustain a particular quality based on its name alone.
Apple’s current Mac mini specifications describe configurable Apple silicon models, memory and storage options, video encode capabilities, and Ethernet connectivity. They do not establish a minimum configuration for OBS or mean you need to buy a new computer. Base any hardware decision on the workload and peripherals you actually plan to use.

Make sure your YouTube channel can go live
YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Confirm live access ahead of a scheduled broadcast rather than relying on OBS startup as proof that the channel is ready (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).
Create a LaunchAgent to open OBS at login
The example below creates a user-level property list that asks launchd to open OBS at login. Apple’s guide documents property-list job configuration and identifies Label and ProgramArguments among the required keys in its example. The guide is archival, and macOS behavior and supported launchctl commands can vary by release. Verify the commands against the macOS version on your Mac; this configuration has not been tested across macOS versions.

- Find the OBS application path. In Finder, locate OBS in Applications (or wherever you installed it). If the path differs from
/Applications/OBS.app, use the correct path in the property list. - Create your user LaunchAgents folder if needed. In Terminal, run
mkdir -p "$HOME/Library/LaunchAgents". This is the per-user directory, not the system LaunchAgents directory. - Create the property list. Use a plain-text editor to save the following as
com.example.obs-login.plistinside~/Library/LaunchAgents/. Replace the example application path if your OBS installation is elsewhere.<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Label</key> <string>com.example.obs-login</string> <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/usr/bin/open</string> <string>-a</string> <string>/Applications/OBS.app</string> </array> <key>RunAtLoad</key> <true/> </dict> </plist>The label should be unique for this job. Keep the XML structure and ensure the app path is a single, valid string.
- Validate the file. Run
plutil -lint "$HOME/Library/LaunchAgents/com.example.obs-login.plist". Correct any reported syntax error before loading the job. - Load the job using the method supported by your macOS release. Apple’s launchd documentation is archival; check the current
launchctlguidance for your macOS version instead of assuming an older command is valid. Do not copy a system-daemon command for a per-user agent. - Sign out and back in to test. Confirm OBS opens in the intended account. This test confirms app launch only; separately verify the scene, devices, YouTube connection, and broadcast state.
To stop automatic opening, remove or disable the LaunchAgent using the procedure supported by your macOS version. Avoid deleting or changing a system-level job: this setup belongs in your home folder.
Connect OBS to YouTube and start the stream
YouTube describes encoder streaming as suitable for screen or gameplay sharing, external audio/video equipment, and more advanced productions. An encoder can be software or hardware; YouTube does not recommend one specific choice on the cited help page (YouTube Help: Live streaming with an encoder).

- In YouTube Studio, create or open the stream you intend to broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. In OBS, open the streaming settings and enter the server URL and key in the fields provided by the selected service/connection method.
- Configure the encoder and production in OBS, including the scene and audio/video sources you intend viewers to see and hear. Run a test before a public or scheduled broadcast.
- When ready, start streaming from OBS and check YouTube Studio to confirm that the incoming stream is connected. Opening OBS from a LaunchAgent is not this start action.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer streams (YouTube Help: Live streaming with an encoder). Treat the stream key as account-specific credential material: do not show it in screenshots, logs, examples, or shared files.
Troubleshoot the login launch and broadcast separately
- OBS does not open at login: Confirm the plist is in
~/Library/LaunchAgents/, the XML passesplutil -lint, the application path exists, and the job was loaded using instructions for your macOS version. On macOS 13 and later, check System Settings’ Login Items controls for whether the LaunchAgent is allowed; Apple documents switches for LaunchAgents for apps targeting macOS 13 and later (Apple Support: Change Login Items settings). - OBS opens, but the wrong setup appears: Check the scene collection, profile, and selected sources in OBS. A successful app launch does not certify that a particular production is ready.
- OBS opens, but YouTube is not live: Check that the correct stream URL and key are configured, live access is enabled for the channel, and you explicitly started streaming in OBS. Confirm connection status in YouTube Studio.
- Video or audio fails, lags, or drops: Check source selection and device permissions, then test the actual scene and encoder settings. Compatibility requirements alone do not guarantee adequate performance; encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity affect workload (OBS system requirements).
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube loop rather than a camera, gameplay, or scene-based OBS production, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
