You can use a laptop without an external mouse by navigating with the keyboard, using the built-in trackpad, or—on supported systems—controlling the pointer with Mouse Keys or voice commands. Keyboard navigation moves focus between buttons, links, and fields; it does not normally move a free-floating pointer. Choose the method that matches what you need to do.
Choose the right mouse-free method
| Method | Moves the pointer? | What it needs | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyboard focus and shortcuts | Usually no | A working keyboard and controls that accept keyboard focus | Forms, menus, app commands, and routine navigation |
| Built-in trackpad | Yes | A working trackpad | Pointer movement without an external mouse |
| Windows Mouse Keys | Yes | Windows and a numeric keypad | Moving the pointer with keypad keys |
| Windows Voice Access | Yes, through voice commands and on-screen number overlays | Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, a microphone, and internet for initial setup | Voice-based app, text, and on-screen control |
| macOS Full Keyboard Access | No free pointer movement | A Mac keyboard and the feature enabled | Moving focus among interface controls and activating them |
| macOS VoiceOver | No free pointer movement | A Mac keyboard and VoiceOver enabled | Spoken, item-by-item navigation and interaction |
Hardware and software support vary by laptop and operating-system version. MacBooks include a built-in trackpad; the feature-specific steps below apply to the operating systems named.

Use the keyboard for everyday navigation
- Press Tab to move focus forward through available controls; press Shift+Tab to move backward.
- Use the arrow keys to move within many menus, lists, and groups.
- Press Enter or Space to activate a focused button or item, depending on the control.
- Use app shortcuts for frequent actions such as switching apps, saving, copying, pasting, or closing a window. The exact keys differ between Windows, macOS, and individual applications.
To click without a mouse, first move focus to the item with Tab or the arrow keys, then press Enter or Space. If an item never receives focus or does not respond, try the app’s menu or shortcut help. Keyboard navigation does not expose every control in every app; on Mac in particular, Apple notes that Tab navigation is commonly used for forms but does not reach all focusable elements. See Apple’s guide to VoiceOver and Tab navigation.
Use the built-in trackpad
If the external mouse is missing but the laptop’s trackpad works, use it to move the pointer and select items as usual. Trackpad gestures and settings depend on the device and operating system; Apple’s Mac keyboard and trackpad guide covers Mac options.

Control the pointer with Mouse Keys in Windows
Mouse Keys uses a numeric keypad to move the pointer, so it is useful when you specifically need cursor movement rather than keyboard focus. Microsoft documents it for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Accessibility > Mouse.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Ease of Access > Mouse.
- Turn on Mouse Keys and use the numeric keypad to control the pointer.
If the laptop keyboard has no numeric keypad, an external numeric keypad may be needed for this particular method. It is not required for ordinary keyboard navigation or voice control. Microsoft’s input-device accessibility guide also describes Sticky Keys, which lets you enter multi-key shortcuts one key at a time, and Filter Keys, which can ignore brief or repeated keystrokes. The On-Screen Keyboard opens with Windows key+Ctrl+O; it is for entering keystrokes when the physical keyboard is difficult or unavailable, not a pointer substitute by itself.
Use voice to control Windows 11
Voice Access can open and switch apps, enter text, and interact with controls by name or number. It is available on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. Initial setup requires an internet connection to download language files; Microsoft says Voice Access can work offline after setup. To enable it, go to Settings > Accessibility > Speech or find Voice Access with Windows Search. Setup details and supported languages are in Microsoft’s Voice Access setup guide.

Select an on-screen item
Say the item’s name to select, focus, or double-click it. If names are unclear or several controls are similar, use number overlays to label items and select the number shown. Microsoft notes overlays work best on the primary monitor. See Microsoft’s commands for interacting with on-screen items.

Use VoiceOver for spoken navigation
VoiceOver is the built-in screen reader: it announces interface items as you navigate and interact with them using keyboard commands. Its default modifier is Caps Lock or Control-Option. It can reach items that ordinary Tab navigation may not, making it the better option when you need spoken descriptions or broader item-by-item access. Apple’s VoiceOver navigation guide describes using it with Tab.
For common Mac actions, keyboard shortcuts can replace many trackpad interactions, including copy, paste, save, find, print, and app switching. Apple lists these in its keyboard and trackpad guide.
