To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a cloud VM, run an encoder such as FFmpeg on a Linux Compute Engine instance, configure it with the current ingest details from YouTube Studio, and send the repeated video to YouTube over RTMPS. The VM hosts the encoder; YouTube creates the viewer-facing broadcast. A VM is optional, not a requirement for every YouTube live stream.
How the VM, encoder and YouTube broadcast fit together
- Google Compute Engine VM: the cloud computer that stays on and hosts the encoder. You choose its zone, operating system, machine properties and storage. Google Cloud’s Compute Engine overview describes instances.
- Encoder: software such as FFmpeg reads the video, repeats it and sends the audio/video feed to YouTube. A headless command-line workflow does not need a desktop.
- YouTube Live: YouTube Studio supplies the stream settings used for ingestion and the broadcast viewers watch. In YouTube’s API model, the stream holds transmission settings while the broadcast represents the viewer-facing event. See Understanding broadcasts and streams.
You can administer a Linux VM over SSH rather than keeping a desktop session open; see Google Cloud’s Linux VM SSH guide.

Before creating the VM
Check live-stream eligibility
Check YouTube Studio and current YouTube Help guidance to confirm that your channel can go live. Eligibility and any first-time activation wait were not established here, so do not assume a newly created channel can stream immediately.
Choose a workload, not a guessed machine size
Select a machine with enough CPU, memory, disk and sustained network capacity for the resolution, frame rate and encoding method you intend to use. There is no single machine size that fits every stream. Software encoding can put substantial load on the CPU, especially at higher resolutions or frame rates; test your actual media and settings before relying on unattended operation.

Decide whether you need a graphical desktop
FFmpeg can run headlessly, which avoids installing and maintaining a desktop. If your chosen GUI encoder requires a display device, Google documents enabling virtual displays on a VM. A virtual display is not GPU acceleration, and Google cautions that the virtual-workstation setup is not suitable for graphically intensive workloads that need hardware graphics acceleration. See Enable virtual displays on a VM.
Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and prepare the live broadcast using its current interface and eligibility prompts.
- Open the broadcast’s stream settings and copy the current ingest URL and stream key. These are credentials for sending video, not viewer-facing details.
- Keep the key private. Do not include it in a public script, screenshot, shared terminal history or support message. Use a protected configuration or secret mechanism appropriate to your setup, and replace the key in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Keep the broadcast and ingest settings conceptually distinct: the encoder sends to the stream endpoint, and YouTube associates that feed with the broadcast viewers see.
Choose the ingest protocol and video settings
Use RTMPS for a straightforward loop
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, and says stream data is encrypted through Google’s servers. For an ordinary prerecorded loop, RTMPS is the sensible default. Use the current URL and key shown in YouTube Studio rather than relying on a copied or old endpoint. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

Match the current YouTube settings table
YouTube Help’s published encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube-published settings, not independent measurements; check the live guidance again before configuring a stream because the table may change.
| H.264 output example | YouTube-published recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
Those examples are bitrate recommendations from YouTube Help, not a promise that a particular VM can encode or upload them reliably. Choose the row for your actual resolution and frame rate, consult YouTube’s current table for other combinations and codec-specific ranges, then verify the VM can encode in real time and sustain the upload. YouTube transcodes live input into viewer formats.

When HLS may make sense
YouTube supports HLS ingestion for appropriate encoders and scenarios, but its guidance says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. HLS also requires specific packaging and request behavior, including TS segments, a rolling media playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests and no byte ranges. Unless your encoder or codec needs call for HLS, RTMPS is simpler for a basic loop. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
Configure FFmpeg to loop the file
The loop mechanism commonly used in FFmpeg is -stream_loop -1, which tells FFmpeg to repeat an input indefinitely. A secondary guide describes this technique: FFmpeg settings for 24/7 YouTube streaming. Exact command syntax depends on the media, audio tracks, FFmpeg build and selected encoder. Do not copy a generic command blindly or assume it has been tested for your file.

- Install FFmpeg on the Linux VM using the package source appropriate for its operating system, and confirm the installed build includes the encoders and protocol support you need.
- Put the video on the VM’s disk or make it accessible to the encoder. Check that it decodes correctly, has the expected audio, and can be read for the full duration.
- Construct an FFmpeg command that loops the input with
-stream_loop -1, encodes or passes through compatible audio/video, applies the selected CBR bitrate and two-second keyframes, and publishes to the RTMPS ingest URL with the stream key. - Keep the key out of shell history and logs where possible. Restrict permissions on any configuration file that contains it.
- Run the command in a process supervisor or service arrangement suitable for your Linux distribution so it can be monitored and restarted after an encoder process failure. This does not guarantee recovery from every VM, network or YouTube interruption.
- Watch the YouTube Studio preview and health messages during a test. Inspect the audio, motion, transition from the file’s end back to its start, encoder logs, VM uptime and any archived result.
For precise FFmpeg options, use the documentation for your installed build and the current YouTube encoder settings. Input containers and codecs differ; incompatible streams may need transcoding rather than direct copying. Transcoding also increases VM CPU load.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Test and operate the stream
- Test with audio and movement representative of the actual video. YouTube specifically recommends representative preflight tests and monitoring stream health and messages.
- Confirm the preview appears, the audio is audible, the loop boundary is acceptable and the broadcast is associated with the intended event.
- Monitor both sides: encoder process/logs and VM availability, plus YouTube Studio’s health indicators. A healthy process alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a good stream.
- Check the resulting archive if you intend to keep one. Continuous operation is not guaranteed by the sources cited here; plan to detect failures rather than assume a loop is self-healing.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview or YouTube reports no incoming stream | Wrong or stale ingest URL/key, encoder not running, or outbound connection issue | Re-copy the current stream details from YouTube Studio, inspect the encoder log and confirm the VM can reach the ingest service. |
| Preview appears but stream health is poor | Unstable upload, bitrate mismatch or VM unable to encode in real time | Compare configured bitrate and output mode with YouTube’s current table; test a lower resolution or frame rate and monitor CPU and network behavior. |
| Video runs but audio is missing or wrong | Unexpected input track, unsupported audio settings or incorrect mapping | Inspect the file’s audio tracks and the encoder output; test the actual audio before leaving the stream unattended. |
| Loop stalls or fails at the end of the file | Loop option placement, media decode issue or incompatible stream-copy workflow | Check FFmpeg’s input handling and logs; test multiple full loop transitions before relying on the process. |
| GUI encoder has no usable screen | The application expects a display device | Use a headless encoder where possible, or configure a virtual display; do not mistake a virtual display for GPU acceleration. |
| Encoder exits after a disconnect | Process or network interruption; YouTube-side recovery is not guaranteed | Use process monitoring and alerting, inspect logs and reconnect only after confirming the current stream settings. Test recovery behavior rather than assuming it. |
Estimate the cost and understand the trade-offs
There is no defensible flat Google Cloud total without your selected region, machine family and size, disk, runtime and outbound traffic assumptions. Use Google’s current pricing calculator with those inputs before committing to continuous operation. A VM shifts the always-on work off your home computer, but adds cloud configuration, monitoring and usage-based spend; it is not universally better than a local machine.
