To use a Garmin golf watch, make sure the correct course is available on the watch, start the Golf activity, wait for satellite acquisition, and select the course. During play, use the hole view for yardages, enable scoring to record each hole, and sync after the round to review the scorecard. The exact course-loading, update, and feature controls vary by watch model, so use the instructions for your specific Approach device where they differ.
Before your round: make sure the course is ready
Garmin watches do not all load or update courses the same way. Some Approach devices come with course maps already available; others use Garmin Golf or Garmin Connect to download a course. Garmin says CourseView covers over 43,000 golf courses worldwide, but coverage and storage capacity vary by device. Check your watch’s manual and Garmin’s course and software update guidance for the supported path.

Load a course with Garmin Golf
For compatible watches that use the Garmin Golf app workflow, Garmin’s instructions are to open the app, start the Golf activity on the watch, wait for the watch to acquire satellites, and select a nearby course when prompted. The watch displays the 20 closest courses; select the correct one and follow the on-watch prompts to transfer it. This path applies only to supported devices. See Garmin’s Garmin Golf course-download instructions.
Load a course with Garmin Connect
On compatible devices that use Garmin Connect, download the course in the app and sync the watch. Garmin says the watch displays the five closest courses based on its GPS location. This is a separate documented workflow from the Garmin Golf method; do not assume the same steps work on every model. See Garmin’s Garmin Connect course-download instructions.

Update maps and software
CourseView maps are updated periodically. Garmin says all Approach devices can use Garmin Express for software and map updates; some devices can receive software updates through Garmin Golf, and some can update CourseView maps through Map Manager over Wi-Fi. Which option is available depends on the device, so follow the model-specific instructions rather than relying on one update method.

Start the round and find the right hole
- Start Golf: On the watch, open the Golf activity. The exact control or menu path depends on the model; consult its owner’s manual if the labels differ.
- Wait for satellites: Give the watch time to acquire satellites before choosing or confirming the course.
- Select the course: Choose the course you are actually playing from the options shown. The hole view and distances depend on the watch having the correct course.
- Check the hole: Confirm the displayed hole matches your position, especially if starting somewhere other than the first tee or moving between holes.
Read distances and understand PlaysLike
The hole view provides course information and distances. PlaysLike Distance is not simply the unadjusted yardage: Garmin describes it as a distance to the green adjusted for elevation. On some compatible models it can also account for wind speed, wind direction, and air density, with air density based on temperature, humidity, and air pressure. Inputs, settings, and any Garmin Golf Membership requirement depend on the model; check the watch’s manual and Garmin’s PlaysLike guidance to see what your device uses.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Garmin lists limited sky view affecting satellite lock, changed or outdated course mapping, a manually moved pin, and PlaysLike being enabled among possible causes. Garmin’s support guidance for an Approach handheld says a discrepancy of five yards or less is acceptable for a consumer-grade product; that is not a universal accuracy guarantee or a watch-specific performance test. Keep score on the watch
Enable scoring for the Golf activity. When scoring is enabled, the watch prompts for a score after each hole; the score defaults to par and can be changed manually. Enter or correct the result for each hole as you play. Depending on the device and settings, the watch may also track statistics such as putts, fairways in regulation, penalties, and greens in regulation; not every device supports every statistic.
Garmin’s feature overview explains scoring and device-dependent statistics in its golf-watch feature guidance. For exact button presses or touch-screen controls, use your watch’s owner’s manual.

- Stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist
- Be comfortable on and off the course with the lightweight ComfortFit nylon strap
- Battery life: up to 10 days in smartwatch mode and up to 15 hours in GPS mode
- Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
- Playslike Distance feature tells you how far each shot truly is, with adjusted yardage for elevation changes
AutoShot and club tracking are optional
AutoShot can detect shots using swing speed and ball impact and record shot distances, but it has additional requirements and is not needed for manual scoring or basic yardages. Garmin says AutoShot use requires scoring to be enabled, the watch to be on the correct hole at tee-off, the score to be entered before teeing off on the next hole, and the watch to be worn on the lead wrist. A missed shot can be added manually.

CT10 sensors are required for some setups: Garmin specifies a full set of Approach CT10 sensors for AutoShot detection on the Approach G12 and S12. They are not a general requirement for course maps, yardages, or manual scorekeeping. Feature compatibility varies by model.

Sync and review the round
After play, sync the watch with Garmin Connect. Scorecards and supported shot information can be reviewed in Garmin Golf or Garmin Connect. AutoShot shot-analysis uploads require the watch to be paired and synced through compatible apps or Garmin Express. If the round or shot data does not appear, confirm the watch is paired and complete a sync before reviewing the apps.
