You can use a compatible Galaxy Tab as a laptop-like workspace by running Samsung DeX on the tablet, adding a keyboard and mouse, and opening the Android apps you need. A monitor is optional. The key caveat: DeX gives Android a desktop-style interface; it does not turn the tablet into a Windows or macOS computer, and some Galaxy Tab models cannot send video to an external screen.
What you need for a laptop-like Galaxy Tab setup
Start with the tablet itself: Samsung DeX is the feature that provides a desktop-style workspace, including app windows you can move and resize on supported tablets. Samsung’s current US guide describes standalone DeX on the tablet screen. Check the exact model and software version against Samsung’s workspace guidance, because modes and availability vary.

- For portable use: a keyboard cover made for your exact tablet model. Check cover compatibility and whether the screen and keyboard suit your typing needs.
- For a desk: a stand plus a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. This can make sense if you already own peripherals.
- For a larger workspace: a compatible external monitor or TV, connected wirelessly or by cable where the tablet supports it.
Samsung also documents touchscreen and S Pen control in DeX. Keyboard and mouse are options, not prerequisites. See Samsung’s keyboard and mouse instructions.
How to set up Samsung DeX on the tablet
- Confirm the tablet supports the mode you want. Check Samsung’s DeX workspace compatibility guidance and Galaxy Tab DeX guide for your model and software version.
- Open standalone DeX. On a supported tablet, start DeX from Quick Settings. Samsung says Android 16 with One UI 8.0 also adds a way to launch standalone DeX from the Home screen on supported devices.
- Connect your input devices. Attach a compatible keyboard cover, connect a USB keyboard and mouse, or pair Bluetooth peripherals. Use the touchscreen or S Pen if that better fits the task.
- Open the apps you rely on. Samsung says Galaxy apps can be accessed in DeX, but availability in DeX does not guarantee that every Android app has a desktop-optimized layout. Test the actual apps and workflows you need.
- Add an external screen only if useful. Connect to a compatible display wirelessly or by cable if the tablet supports that method. Verify video output for your exact model before buying an adapter.
Choose a setup for the way you work

These are different ways to arrange the same Android tablet workflow, not equivalent laptop specifications. Choose based on portability, typing comfort, pointer preference, and whether your apps work well in DeX.

Check external-display support before buying an adapter
Not every Galaxy Tab that can run standalone DeX can output video over HDMI. Samsung says the Tab S9 FE, S9 FE+, S10 FE, S10 FE+, and S10 Lite are not compatible with HDMI output. An adapter cannot add a capability the tablet does not support. Check Samsung’s model-specific tablet guidance before choosing a wired setup.
For a wireless display, verify compatibility between the tablet and the display hardware. Samsung’s DeX guidance for external displays describes wired and wireless options, but the connection depends on compatible devices and network conditions; it does not promise a particular performance level.

Know what DeX can—and cannot—replace
DeX is a desktop-like interface for Galaxy devices, not a separate desktop operating system. Samsung describes access to apps and windowed use, but that alone does not establish that a particular Android app offers the controls, layout, or peripheral support you expect from its desktop counterpart.

Also distinguish standalone DeX from DeX for PC. Samsung says DeX for PC is no longer supported on Galaxy devices released with or updated to One UI 7 or later. DeX support for Mac ended in January 2022; existing installs may still work, but Samsung says they no longer receive support or updates and are no longer available to download. Samsung’s current US workspace guide lists standalone DeX for the Tab S4, S6, S7 series, S8 series, S9 series, A9+, S10 series, S11 series, and A11+. Support can vary by software version and market, so use the current compatibility information for your specific tablet rather than relying on the series name alone. HDMI output is a separate capability from standalone DeX.
