Which method works depends on your exact camera, iPhone connector, and file format. Some supported camera apps also let you control the DSLR remotely; connecting a DSLR does not turn it into an external camera for the iPhone’s built-in Camera app.
How do I connect my DSLR to my iPhone?
First check the DSLR’s exact model and the iPhone’s connector. Camera-app compatibility and features vary by model, while wired options depend on the phone port, camera transfer support, and card type. Choose the route that matches what you want to do:

| Method | Best for | Check first | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camera-maker app over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi | Wireless photo transfer and, on some cameras, remote shooting | That the exact DSLR model and desired feature are supported by the maker’s current app and compatibility list | Features and file handling vary. A direct camera Wi-Fi connection may interrupt the iPhone’s internet access. |
| USB connection through a camera adapter | Importing without removing the memory card | The iPhone connector, camera USB-transfer mode, and correct camera cable | Camera-side behavior and file compatibility vary; an imported file may not display. |
| Memory-card reader | Importing from the card without relying on the camera’s wireless features | The iPhone connector and a reader that supports the DSLR’s card format | You need to remove the card, and some file formats may not display in Photos. |
How do I transfer photos from my DSLR to my iPhone?
Option 1: Use the camera maker’s app
- Find your DSLR’s exact model in the manufacturer’s current app compatibility list. Check that the app supports the feature you want; compatibility with transfers does not necessarily mean remote shooting is available. Nikon’s SnapBridge compatibility information is one example of a maker-specific list.
- Install the official app and begin pairing through the camera or app instructions. Follow the requested Bluetooth or Wi-Fi steps, and grant the app permission to access Photos when prompted.
- Keep the camera charged and ensure the memory card has space. For model-specific steps, follow the camera manual. For example, Nikon’s D3500 instructions say to start from the camera’s “Connect to smart device” menu and continue in SnapBridge on iOS, rather than pairing as a substitute through the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings.
- If the app asks you to join the camera’s Wi-Fi network, follow its prompt. On some Nikon models, direct Wi-Fi access-point mode can leave the iPhone without internet while connected; reconnect to your usual Wi-Fi afterward.
App features and file support are model-specific. Nikon says SnapBridge’s selected-download view does not show NEF/NRW RAW or TIFF files, and movies appear only when connected over Wi-Fi. These limits apply to the described SnapBridge view, not necessarily to other apps.

- Choose an iPhone-compatible camera adapter for the phone’s connector and the USB cable required by the camera.
- Connect the adapter to the iPhone, then connect the camera to the adapter by USB.
- Turn on the camera and select its USB transfer mode if the camera manual calls for one.
- Open Photos and use the import controls to select and import the images. The exact screen or tab can differ by iOS version; follow Apple’s current instructions for importing photos using Apple camera adapters.
Apple documents camera import using compatible adapters, but the camera manual determines the required cable and camera-side settings. Do not assume an adapter will power every camera or that every USB connection will be recognized.

- Turn the DSLR off before removing its card.

- Insert the card, connect the reader to the iPhone, then open Photos and choose the import controls.
Apple lists support for protocols including PTP and mass storage, and SD-family formats including SDSC, SDHC, and SDXC, for compatible camera-adapter workflows. That does not mean every card type or third-party reader will work. Check the card and reader specifications before buying.
Can I connect my DSLR to my iPhone with a cable?
Yes, if the camera supports USB photo transfer and you have an adapter compatible with the iPhone’s port plus the correct cable for the camera. Connect the camera, turn it on, select transfer mode if required, then import through Photos. If Photos does not recognize the camera, the camera’s USB mode, cable, or adapter may not suit that model; importing the card with a compatible reader is an alternative.

Apple’s adapter guidance also specifies USB 3 transfer speeds for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro models in the described adapter context; other adapters or iOS devices use USB 2. This is a device-specific specification, not a guaranteed DSLR transfer speed.

What should I try if the connection fails?
- Wireless pairing fails: Confirm the exact DSLR is supported, start pairing through the maker’s instructions, and check the camera’s wireless settings. Nikon’s D3500 guidance specifically directs users to start pairing in the camera menu and continue in SnapBridge, rather than pairing from iPhone Bluetooth settings alone.
- The app asks for Wi-Fi: Join the camera network as directed. If internet access stops during a direct Wi-Fi connection, reconnect the iPhone to its normal network after the transfer.
- USB import does not appear: Check that the camera is on, the cable and adapter match the camera and iPhone, and the camera is in the required transfer mode. Consult the camera manual for its USB behavior.
- The card reader is not recognized: Verify the reader supports the card format and iPhone connector, then reinsert the card with the camera safely off.
- A transferred file will not display: Check the file format. Import support does not guarantee that Photos can preview every file; camera-app handling also varies.
