You can use an address such as [email protected] with iCloud Mail through Apple’s Custom Email Domain feature, included with iCloud+. It works well for personal and family email, but it is not a business-mail administration platform: Apple allows up to five active domains, three active addresses per person on each domain, and sharing with up to five other people. You keep control of a domain you already own; Apple hosts its mail once you point the domain’s DNS records to iCloud.
Is iCloud Mail the right host for your domain?
A custom email domain lets you use your own domain name for email—for example, [email protected]—instead of an address ending in @icloud.com. In this arrangement, a registrar or DNS provider may continue to manage the domain registration and DNS, while iCloud Mail handles mail delivery. It is different from Hide My Email, which creates private forwarding addresses rather than hosting mail for a domain you own.

- A good fit: You already use iCloud+, want a few personal or family addresses, and prefer Apple Mail and iCloud.com.
- Consider a dedicated email host: You need employee accounts managed centrally, shared team inboxes, delegated access, detailed compliance controls, extensive routing or aliases, or high-volume transactional and marketing sending. Apple says managed accounts are not supported for Custom Email Domain (Apple Support).
Each domain participant uses their own Apple Account and iCloud Mail. Sharing a domain does not automatically make a shared mailbox. Hide My Email is also not a substitute for a hosted custom-domain mailbox.

Check the requirements and limits
Before starting, make sure you have:
- An iCloud+ subscription, either your own or one shared with you through Family Sharing. Custom Email Domain is included with iCloud+ plans (Apple iCloud+).
- An Apple Account with two-factor authentication and a primary iCloud Mail address. iCloud Mail must be enabled.
- A domain you own, or a willingness to purchase one through Apple’s supported setup flow.
- Access to the domain’s authoritative DNS settings, unless Apple can update them through a supported registrar connection.
- If you are moving from another provider, an inventory of existing addresses and enough iCloud storage for any mail you plan to import.
Apple documents a maximum of five active custom domains. Each person can have up to three active addresses on a domain, and the domain can be shared with up to five other people. These are address limits, not a promise of unlimited aliases or separate mailboxes (Apple Support; Apple iCloud User Guide).

Availability can vary by country or region. If the Custom Email Domain option is missing, verify your iCloud+ access, primary iCloud Mail address, Mail setting, account requirements, and regional availability.
Prepare before changing mail providers
If the domain already receives mail, do not start by changing its MX records. First record every address in use, who uses it, and which services rely on it. Include Apple Account login addresses, forwarders, catch-all behavior, mailing lists, automated senders, and historical mail that must be kept.
One account detail can block setup: an address already used as the email address for another Apple Account cannot be added to the custom domain until that account stops using it. Change the other account’s primary email address first; deleting that Apple Account does not necessarily make the address immediately reusable. Also, Apple says a custom-domain address cannot be used to sign in to an Apple Account once it has been added to iCloud Mail, even if the address is later deleted (Apple Support; Apple iCloud User Guide).

- Open Settings, tap [your name], then tap iCloud.
- Make sure Mail is enabled, then tap Custom Email Domain.
- Choose Buy a Domain if you need one, or Use a Domain You Own to connect an existing domain.
- Follow Apple’s prompts to choose whether the domain is for you alone or for you and other people, enter the domain, and add or verify addresses as requested.
- When Apple asks for DNS changes, use the exact records shown for your domain. Do not substitute values from an old guide.
Apple’s current iPhone instructions describe the setup and address-management flow (iPhone User Guide). If you have not created a primary iCloud Mail address, do that before trying to add a custom domain (iCloud User Guide).
Add an existing domain on iCloud.com
The web interface is useful for domain administration, family sharing, and importing mail.
- Go to icloud.com/icloudplus and sign in to your Apple Account.
- Choose Custom Email Domain, then select Add a domain you own.
- Choose Only You or You and Other People, enter the domain, and add any existing addresses you want to keep.
- Verify the addresses using the messages Apple sends. Resolve any address conflict with another Apple Account before proceeding.
- Update the domain’s DNS records as Apple directs, then return to setup and finish verification.
- Choose a default sending address. You can optionally import existing mail during setup or do it later.
Apple’s setup guide describes the web process, including address verification, DNS, sharing, and the default sending address (Apple iCloud User Guide). Buying a domain through Apple is also an option, but domain availability and pricing depend on the live offer and region (Apple iCloud User Guide).

DNS tells other mail systems where to deliver mail for your domain. Apple may offer automatic updates for some registrars; otherwise, sign in to the DNS host that is authoritative for the domain and enter the records Apple displays. A registrar and DNS host are not always the same company.

- Copy the current records from Apple’s setup screen exactly. Record values can change, and requirements are specific to the setup; do not rely on a static MX or TXT list from an old tutorial.
- Change mail-related records only. Do not delete website records such as those used for a site or other services unless Apple explicitly identifies them as part of the mail setup.
- If you are moving from another mail host, plan the cutover. Conflicting or leftover MX records can keep mail going to the old provider.
- If an SPF record already exists, do not publish a second SPF record blindly. Follow Apple’s current instructions and have the existing policy merged appropriately where required.
- After saving changes, allow time for DNS propagation. Then return to Apple’s setup screen to check verification status.
DNS changes can cause a gap or split in delivery if made before the new addresses and migration are ready. Keep the old provider active until you have tested the new setup and confirmed that needed mail is present.
Manage addresses and choose a sending address
After setup, each participant can manage their own addresses. On the web, go to icloud.com/icloudplus, open Custom Email Domain, and select the domain. On iPhone or iPad, use Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Custom Email Domain, select the domain, then tap Manage Email Addresses. Apple limits each person to three active addresses per domain; a person cannot create or delete addresses assigned to someone else (Apple iCloud User Guide).
Receiving is governed by DNS and the addresses assigned to users. To send, select an available custom address in the message’s From field, or set a default address in iCloud Mail settings. The available From choices can depend on the app and device configuration. Send a test message to an independent provider and reply to it to check the visible sender and return path.
Share the domain with family or other people
The domain owner can share a domain with up to five other people. Family Sharing members may be offered during setup, and Apple also supports invitations to people outside the family group under its account requirements. Invitees need Apple Accounts and must accept invitations when required (Apple Support).

Addresses are associated with individual participants’ Apple Accounts and inboxes; domain sharing is not a shared-inbox feature. Each person has their own address limit. Apple supports transferring an active address between domain members, subject to acceptance by the relevant users (Apple iCloud User Guide).
Decide whether to enable catch-all delivery
Apple’s iPhone flow includes Allow All Incoming Messages. When enabled by the domain owner, messages addressed to uncreated addresses can be delivered to the owner’s inbox. When it is off, mail to nonexistent addresses is returned to the sender; messages sent to deleted addresses are automatically returned (iPhone User Guide).
- Enable it if catching typos or old addresses is more important than filtering unsolicited mail.
- Leave it off if you want unassigned addresses rejected rather than routed to the owner.
Catch-all delivery does not create separate mailboxes or unlimited manageable addresses, and it can increase spam reaching the owner.
Import mail from your previous provider
Apple’s import tool is available on the web, not directly in the Mail app, and works with some—not all—previous providers. To try it, go to icloud.com/icloudplus, open Custom Email Domain, choose the relevant domain or address, select Import Mail, and follow the sign-in prompts for the previous provider. Imported messages appear in a new iCloud Mail folder named after the previous email address; folder organization is preserved within it where supported. The import can take time and requires sufficient iCloud storage (Apple iCloud User Guide; Apple Support).

If the provider is not supported, use Apple Mail to copy or move messages between accounts. Keep the old mailbox active while checking folders, sent messages, attachments, and older mail, and retain an independent backup before closing the account. Mail stored in iCloud counts toward iCloud storage; if storage is exhausted, new messages cannot be received at custom addresses until space is freed (Apple iCloud legal terms).
Test delivery before relying on the domain
- Send from each custom address to an independent email provider and inspect the visible sender.
- Reply to those test messages and confirm replies arrive in the expected iCloud inbox.
- Send from the independent account to every custom address, including each family member’s address.
- If catch-all is enabled, test a deliberately uncreated address and confirm it reaches the intended inbox.
- Check spam placement and confirm messages appear on the Apple devices where iCloud Mail is enabled.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Apple says the domain is not verified | A required DNS record is missing, incorrect, or entered at a non-authoritative DNS host. | Reopen setup, copy the current Apple records exactly, confirm which provider hosts authoritative DNS, and allow propagation. |
| Mail still arrives at the old provider | Old or conflicting MX records remain, or DNS changes have not propagated. | Check the authoritative DNS zone and the records Apple currently requests. Keep the old host active until delivery is confirmed. |
| An address cannot be added | The address may already be associated with another Apple Account. | Change that account’s primary email address before adding the address to the custom domain; account deletion may not release it immediately (Apple Support). |
| Custom Email Domain is missing | The account may lack iCloud+ access, a primary iCloud Mail address, enabled Mail, or regional availability. | Check the setup requirements and confirm the feature is available for your account and region. |
| Import Mail is unavailable or incomplete | The previous provider may not be supported, storage may be insufficient, or the import may still be running. | Check Apple’s import guidance; use Apple Mail for a manual copy if needed, and retain the old mailbox until verified (Apple Support). |
| A family invitation does not work | The invitee may not have accepted or may not meet Apple’s account requirements. | Confirm the invited Apple Account and account settings, then resend or accept the invitation as prompted. |
| New messages stop arriving | iCloud storage may be full, or the domain’s mail configuration may have been removed or changed. | Free iCloud storage and verify the domain and DNS configuration before sending more test messages. |
Move the domain away from iCloud Mail
Removing a domain from iCloud Mail stops sending and receiving through iCloud for all addresses on it; it does not cancel the domain registration. The primary @icloud.com address continues to work. Before removal, configure the replacement mail provider and move the mail you need.
- Create the required addresses with the new provider and confirm access to its mailboxes.
- Export or migrate existing messages, then check folders, sent mail, and attachments.
- At the domain’s DNS host, change mail records to those required by the new provider. If you plan ahead, lowering DNS TTL in advance may help changes take effect sooner, but propagation still varies.
- Test incoming and outgoing messages at the new provider, including every address and participant.
- Only after the replacement is working, remove the domain from iCloud Mail and remove iCloud-related records as Apple directs.
Apple’s iPhone guide describes removing a domain and changing DNS when moving to another provider (iPhone User Guide).
