A cloud relay can forward a fireplace stream from an encoder or cloud source to a streaming platform, so the stream does not depend on a single direct connection from your home to the destination. It cannot create video when the source fails: for resilience, pair the relay with a fallback clip, a second live encoder, or a recovery plan.
How a cloud relay fits into a 24/7 fireplace stream
The usual path is video source → encoder → cloud relay → destination platform. Your encoder sends its feed to a provider-issued RTMP or SRT address and stream key. The relay then forwards the incoming stream to the destination or destinations you select. Google Cloud Live Stream API documents pushing output to remote RTMP or SRT endpoints, and Restream describes the encoder-and-destination workflow in its streaming software guide.

A relay can reduce the need for your encoder to connect separately to each destination, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service. If the source stops sending, the relay needs a separate fallback or backup mechanism to keep something on screen.

Choose the source and relay arrangement
Managed relay
A managed relay such as Restream provides encoder ingest and destination setup, with documented options for disconnect protection and a backup stream. Feature access depends on the plan. Restream lists SRT streaming on Business and custom Enterprise plans; check current eligibility before building the workflow around it. Its guides cover encoder setup and SRT setup.

Cloud distribution service
Google Cloud Live Stream API can push output to remote RTMP or SRT endpoints. You must configure the endpoint and operate the cloud workflow; the documentation does not, by itself, establish a particular destination’s compatibility, continuous-stream limit, or total cost. Self-managed VPS relay
A VPS gives you control over the relay software and configuration, but you also own deployment, process supervision, network access, monitoring, and recovery. A community project shows one possible setup: OBS sends SRT to a Docker-hosted MediaMTX relay on a VPS, which can then send downstream outputs. It is an example topology, not evidence of an uptime guarantee or hosting terms: OBS → VPS Streaming Relay (Docker).

Set up the relay and destination
- Decide how the video will be supplied. Choose a continuously running encoder, a cloud streaming service, or a pre-recorded loop workflow. The relay only forwards what its source sends; select a workflow that can supply the fireplace video continuously.
- Create the relay input and choose destinations. In a managed relay, create an encoder stream and select the destination platforms in its dashboard. For Google Cloud Live Stream API, configure remote output to the RTMP or SRT endpoint. With a VPS, deploy and configure the relay software and its input and output routes.
- Copy the provider-issued connection details into the encoder. Enter the exact server URL and stream key, stream ID, or SRT connection URI the provider assigned to you. Restream’s SRT guide shows OBS using the Custom service and the URL it provides. Do not use sample credentials as your production key; treat the real key as a secret.
- Configure the destination stream. Create or select the live event at the platform, set its audience and visibility, and connect the relay output using the destination’s own credentials or endpoint details. Confirm that the relay shows an incoming source and that the destination receives it before announcing the stream.
- Choose what viewers see during an interruption. Configure a fallback video, a second live encoder, or both if your provider supports them. These are distinct protections: a fallback is a holding clip; a backup stream is another live input.
- Test the complete path before relying on it. Start the source and verify playback at the destination. Then perform a controlled source disconnect and reconnect, and check what viewers actually see and how the relay reports the event. This is a recommended operational check, not a guarantee that future failures will recover the same way.
- Write down the recovery procedure. Record who can restart the encoder or relay, where the credentials are stored, how to confirm the destination is live, and what to do if a reconnect does not restore the feed.
Plan for source interruptions and long runtimes
Fallback video versus backup stream
A fallback video is a preselected holding clip shown when the live input disconnects. A backup stream is a second live input, normally sent by another encoder. Restream documents these as separate features. A fallback can keep a picture on screen while the primary source is unavailable, but it does not restore the source; a backup can take over only if the backup input is working and the service supports the switch. Know the protection window
Restream documents disconnect-protection fallback intervals of 5, 15, or 30 minutes and says the feature must be configured before going live. If the input does not reconnect within the configured interval, its guide says the stream ends at the destinations. These are Restream-specific options, not universal relay settings; verify your provider’s current controls and plan eligibility.
Do not treat 24/7 as an uptime promise
Restream states that it does not guarantee a stream will remain live for more than 24 hours even with its backup feature, and recommends restarting continuous streams every 24 hours. Its documentation says to ask about a custom plan for longer duration. This is guidance for Restream’s service, not a limit that can be applied to every relay. For any provider, establish a restart and monitoring plan and test it before depending on a continuous broadcast.

Match the backup feed
For a less jarring transition, keep the primary and backup feeds closely matched in content and presentation. A different scene, loudness, or abrupt change in the fireplace loop can make a switch obvious even if the relay changes inputs successfully.
Check protocol and network access
Use the protocol and ports required by your provider and allow the encoder’s outbound traffic through local firewalls and gateways. Restream’s network guide lists RTMP/RTMPS on port 1935 and SRT encoder traffic on UDP port 2010; these are Restream’s listed requirements, so confirm the current settings with whichever service you choose. - Confirm that the encoder is using the correct RTMP or SRT URL and the current stream key or ID.
- Check whether the network blocks the required port or UDP traffic.
- Verify that the relay reports an incoming source and that its destination output is enabled.
- If a firewall rule or gateway setting changed, retest both the incoming feed and the destination output.
Troubleshoot a fireplace stream that will not stay live
