Everything outside the shape is hidden, not deleted, so you can reposition, edit or release the mask later. This guide covers the full workflow, how to edit and release a mask, what to check when it fails, and when to use an opacity mask instead.
Make a clipping mask step by step
Adobe’s instructions state that “Only vector objects can be used as clipping paths.” The artwork being masked, however, can be any type, including a placed photo. The steps below follow Adobe’s “Create clipping masks in Illustrator” (updated October 27, 2025).

- Create the shape. Draw a vector shape, such as an ellipse, rectangle or custom path, that defines the area you want to remain visible.
- Stack it correctly. The shape must sit above the artwork in the stacking order. If the mask is built from several overlapping shapes, group them first so they act as one clipping path.
- Select both. Select the clipping shape and the artwork to be masked.
- Apply the mask. Choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make. Adobe also documents selecting a group or layer in the Layers panel and using Make/Release Clipping Mask.
Example: place a photo, draw a circle over the part you want to keep, select both, and run the command. The photo now shows only inside the circle. This is the workflow Adobe describes; the photo example is an illustration of it.

Select the part visible inside the mask. The hidden portions outside the mask still exist and remain editable, so you can slide a photo around to choose a different crop.

If the mask doesn’t work
- Confirm the clipping shape is a vector object, not a placed image.
- Confirm the shape is above the artwork in the stacking order.
- Confirm both the shape and the artwork were selected when you ran Make.
- If the mask uses multiple shapes, group them first.
For background on how clipping sets behave, see Adobe’s “About clipping masks” (updated February 11, 2026).

A clipping mask gives a clean, hard-edged crop defined by a vector path. If you want a fade or gradual transparency, use an opacity mask, which is covered in Adobe’s “Create and adjust opacity masks in Illustrator” (updated October 27, 2025). They are not interchangeable.
