If your account, region, plan and workspace are included in the rollout, you can create one in the ChatGPT mobile app, desktop app or desktop browser, give it a defined outcome, connect only the services it needs, and review its work between conversations. Access is gradual, so an eligible plan does not guarantee that the feature has reached your account yet.
First, check whether Dots are available to you
OpenAI says Dots are rolling out gradually to ChatGPT Pro users aged over 18 in markets outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom; Business Premium users in supported ChatGPT regions; and Enterprise users, including Edu and Healthcare, when a workspace administrator enables the beta. The rollout began across Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise plans in eligible markets, and access may take several days to appear.

If you cannot find Dots, confirm that you are signed into the intended account and workspace, check your plan and market, and ask an Enterprise administrator whether the beta is enabled. Do not assume that changing devices will unlock a feature that has not reached your account.

Where you can create a Dot
The newest ChatGPT Learn instructions dated October 5–9, 2026 say creation is supported in the ChatGPT mobile app, desktop app and desktop browser. Mobile web is not supported. An older Help Center article still describes desktop app or desktop web as the only creation routes, so its wording may lag behind the newer mobile documentation.

- Sign in to the ChatGPT account and workspace you intend to use.
- Open Dots in the ChatGPT mobile app, desktop app or desktop browser and start the onboarding flow.
- Give the Dot a name and, if offered, choose an appearance.
- Skip plugin or app connections unless the Dot needs them; you can add connections later.
- Describe the outcome you want, the background it needs, and how you want updates or decisions returned.
- Open the Dot profile to inspect activity and results. Correct the relevant task rather than assuming a completed status means the work is accurate.
What a Dot can do
OpenAI describes a Dot as an always-on agent that can pursue a project goal between conversations using its own computer and connected apps. Examples include preparing a presentation, turning an interview transcript into content, improving an app, reviewing a calendar, researching a topic and setting a reminder. It can report progress, return a result for review or ask you to decide what happens next. These are product descriptions, not independent performance tests.
Each task has its own conversation. A new task does not automatically inherit every detail from other conversations with the same Dot, so repeat the files, links, constraints, deadlines and definitions of success that matter for that task.

How to give your Dot a useful first task
Specify an outcome, not a vague role
Instead of “help with work,” state the deliverable: “Create a 10-slide briefing from the attached interview transcript, use only the supplied facts, flag missing evidence, and return an outline before drafting.” Include the audience, format, deadline, source material and what a finished result must contain.
Set the decision boundary
Tell the Dot which steps it may take independently and which require your approval. For example, it might research and draft without asking, but wait before sending a message, changing a file, publishing content or spending money.

Ask for checkpoints
Request progress updates at meaningful stages, such as after source collection, before an irreversible change and when the draft is ready. Review activity marked In progress, Scheduled or Completed in the Dot profile; inspect the actual output even when the task says it is complete.
Cloud computer, local computer and app connections

Grant the narrowest access that can complete the task. Messaging channels, connected apps and local-computer access are separate permissions, not one all-purpose approval.

Rules, approvals and pausing
Custom rules let you choose whether the Dot can act without asking, act after a pre-approval, ask before a step, or hand a step back to you. Rules do not bypass built-in safeguards and cannot grant access to an unconnected service.
Pause the Dot when you do not want it working and resume it later. If you reset it, the Dot, its conversations, saved memories and scheduled tasks are deleted. Save any results you need and read the deletion notice before confirming.

Common rollout and setup problems
- “I can’t find Dots.” Check plan, age, market, workspace beta status and staged rollout timing. If all appear correct, wait for the feature to reach the account rather than treating the absence as a setup error.
- Mobile web shows no creation option. Use the mobile app instead. The current Learn instructions support the app, desktop app and desktop browser, not mobile web.
- The Dot cannot access a service. Confirm that the specific app is connected and that the required action is allowed. A messaging channel alone is not app access.
- The Dot reports completion but the result is wrong. Open the task, inspect its work, provide a correction with the missing context, and tighten its approval rules for future steps.
- Local computer actions do not run. Confirm that local access was separately granted and that the computer is online with the ChatGPT app open.
