A burner wallet is a separate wallet address you use for experiments, funded only with an amount you can afford to lose. It can limit how much of your crypto is exposed while you explore an unfamiliar decentralized app (dApp), but it cannot prove the app is legitimate or make signing a transaction safe.
What a burner wallet does—and does not—protect
“Burner wallet” is a practical description, not a formal wallet category or standard. For this purpose, it means a separate account or address reserved for testing, with a small balance and no main-wallet recovery phrase or private key entered into unfamiliar pages, extensions, or tools.

Separation limits the funds directly exposed in an experiment. It does not make a malicious dApp trustworthy, prevent you from signing a harmful request, or necessarily cancel permissions granted to a contract. Treat the test balance as expendable.
Set up the test wallet
- Create a separate account or address. Use a wallet you already trust to create a new account, or use a separate wallet. Keep it distinct from the account holding your main funds.
- Fund it sparingly. Send only the amount you are prepared to lose, including enough of the network’s native currency to pay transaction fees. Avoid moving your main wallet’s recovery phrase or private key into the testing setup.
- Keep its purpose narrow. Use this address for dApp experiments rather than as a new everyday wallet. A small, separate balance reduces exposure if an interaction goes wrong.
Check the dApp and its request before signing
Verify the site address
Reach the dApp from the project’s official channels and compare the exact URL before connecting. MetaMask says trust signals can help identify an entity, but an absent verified badge is not proof of danger, and a trust signal is not an endorsement or guarantee (MetaMask’s guidance on security alerts).

Confirm the network and understand the permission
Check that the wallet is on the chain you intend to use. Connecting an account is not the same as approving token use: a connection can expose your public address, balances, and activity, while a token approval authorizes a contract to interact with specified tokens. Read the wallet prompt rather than assuming that connecting alone grants—or avoids—token permissions. Coinbase explains dApp permissions and token approvals.
Do not sign a request you cannot explain, and do not approve merely to clear a warning or dismiss a prompt. If an approval offers an amount or spending limit, choose a suitably limited authorization rather than an unlimited allowance where that option is available. Coinbase warns that a malicious contract can exploit unlimited allowances to withdraw the entire token balance it can access.

Use transaction previews as information, not proof
“A transaction simulation is a test run of your transaction,” as MetaMask’s transaction-simulation guide puts it. A preview can show estimated balance changes and help you spot an unexpected outcome before signing.
However, a standard off-chain simulation is not a safety guarantee. MetaMask describes “red pill” attacks in which a malicious contract behaves benignly during simulation but differently during actual execution. MetaMask also describes an enforced on-chain simulation feature designed to revert when execution differs from the simulation. Available features and supported networks can change, so check the wallet’s current documentation for the network you are using; do not assume every preview is enforced or that a successful preview makes a dApp safe.

Disconnect and review approvals when finished
Disconnecting a dApp and revoking a token approval are different actions. A connection concerns access to the wallet session; an approval may remain active after you leave the site, until it is used up or revoked. Revoking an approval is an on-chain transaction and requires a network fee. Coinbase’s permissions and approvals guidance explains these distinctions.
- Disconnect from dApps you no longer plan to use using the wallet’s connection-management controls.
- Review token approvals for the test address and revoke permissions you no longer need.
- Use approval tools reached through trusted official sources, and check their URLs carefully. Ethereum.org’s scam guidance lists Revoke.cash and Etherscan’s Token Approval Checker for reviewing and revoking approvals.
Disconnecting alone does not revoke approvals. Likewise, revocation does not undo transactions already completed; it removes an active authorization going forward.

A quick pre-signing checklist
- Am I using the separate test address, with only a small expendable balance?
- Did I verify the exact dApp URL through an official project channel?
- Is the selected network the one I intend to use?
- Do I understand whether the prompt is a connection, signature, token approval, or transfer?
- Does the preview show the expected effect, while remembering it is not proof of safe execution?
- Can I explain and justify every permission I am about to grant?
