The reliable way to upload a custom Minecraft modpack is to make a server-ready copy, install the exact same Minecraft and mod-loader versions on the server, remove client-only mods, upload the pack files, and give every player an identical client profile. A server can reject an otherwise valid pack when even one mod, configuration file, loader build, or Java version differs.

What you need to match before uploading anything
Write down four values from the working client profile and treat them as a single compatibility target:

- the Minecraft version;
- the loader family: Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge;
- the precise loader version; and
- the Java version required by the pack and supported by the host.
Those values must agree on the player’s computer, the server software, and the host’s runtime. “The same loader” is not enough if the client uses a different loader build. Do not begin by copying files; first confirm the target server software can run that combination.
Make a backup of the client profile and, if a world already exists, copy the world separately. Keep the original profile untouched so you can compare it with the server copy and roll back a removal that turns out to be necessary.

What a server pack is
A server pack is a multiplayer-ready version of a modpack rather than a raw copy of every file in a launcher profile. CurseForge describes it as “a specially prepared version of your modpack that allows it to be run on a multiplayer server.” The preparation matters because dedicated servers do not render graphics or provide a player interface, while some client mods assume that they can.
For most packs, the working server package is centered on these directories:

World saves, resource packs, datapacks, scripts, and other directories may also be required by a particular pack. Keep anything the pack documentation identifies as shared or server-side, but do not upload a client-only folder simply because it exists in the launcher profile.
How to turn a CurseForge profile into a server pack
1. Test the profile as a client
Launch the pack locally and enter a test world. This confirms that the downloaded mods and their dependencies work together before you add a server as a second variable. Record the exact profile version and loader build shown by the launcher.
2. Make a working copy
Duplicate the profile or export it before editing. Perform all removals in the copy. If a mod later proves to be required on the server, you can restore it without rebuilding the entire client installation.
3. Identify client-only mods
Read each mod’s project page or included documentation. Remove visual, menu, HUD, replay, shader, minimap, and other interface components unless the author explicitly says they support a dedicated server. A mod can be harmless in single-player yet stop a dedicated server during startup because it tries to load client classes that do not exist on the server.

Do not classify a mod by its name alone. Some performance or library mods have separate client and server behavior, and some gameplay mods need to be present on both sides. Follow the author’s stated side support and dependency list.
4. Assemble the server directories
Place the compatible JARs in mods. Copy the profile’s config directory and add kubejs when the pack uses it. Add optional scripts, server.properties, or the 64×64 server-icon.png only when you have a reason to use them. Keep the directory names and capitalization unchanged.
5. Check dependencies before compression
Open the mod list and verify that required libraries are included. A server crash that names a missing dependency is usually fixed by adding the required library at the correct version, not by adding random client mods. If the pack author supplies a server-pack download, prefer it over creating your own because it has already been filtered for server use.
6. Compress the correct level of the folder
When you create a ZIP for upload, make sure extracting it produces mods, config, and any other top-level directories directly inside the server directory. Avoid an extra wrapper such as MyPack/MyPack/mods; that leaves the host looking in the wrong location.

Mods do not run on a vanilla server. Install the server software for the same Minecraft version and loader family as the profile. Use the official Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge installer or server JAR. CurseForge points administrators to those official installers when a pack does not include a server pack.
- Create an empty server directory and place the selected installer or server JAR there.
- Run the installer or first-start command once so it creates the loader files and the expected directory structure.
- Read the first-start output for the EULA instruction and follow the server software’s terms before starting again.
- Stop the server cleanly after the initial setup, then copy in the prepared pack files.
Fabric’s Windows guidance recommends testing the mod set in a client first and then downloading the server JAR for the chosen version. That same order is useful with other loaders: establish a known-good profile, install its matching server software, and only then transfer the pack.

If the host provides a one-click installer, select the exact loader and Minecraft version rather than the nearest available release. A managed installer saves file work, but it cannot make incompatible mods compatible.
Upload the pack to a self-hosted or managed server
Manual ZIP upload
- Stop the server if it has already been started.
- Open the host’s file manager or connect with the file-transfer method it documents.
- Upload the server-pack ZIP to the server’s main directory.
- Extract it so that
mods,config, andkubejs(if used) sit directly in that directory. - Confirm that the mod JARs are inside
/mods, not in a nested ZIP or an extra folder. - Start the server and watch the console until the loader reports a completed startup or a specific error.
Uploading individual files
If the panel cannot extract ZIP files, create the directories yourself and upload the contents. Craftlands’ documented workflow places mod JARs in /mods and restarts after upload. Copy the configuration directory with the same care; uploading only the JARs can produce a server that starts with different gameplay settings from the client.

Some managed hosts offer a modpack catalog or a server-pack upload form. Use it when it supports the exact loader and version. The host may install Java, create the startup command, and arrange backups, but you still need to verify the resulting files and distribute the matching client profile.
Give players an identical client pack
Every player must use the same Minecraft version, loader family, loader version, mod versions, and relevant configuration files. A client can fail to join even when the server is healthy if one player has an extra gameplay mod, an older library, or a different setting that the server requires to match.
CurseForge’s Share Profile feature can export an importable ZIP. For a private server where worlds are not being shared, its support guidance normally selects config and mods for export. Share the resulting ZIP through a private channel and tell players to import it rather than manually rebuilding the list.
If you use a share code instead of sending the ZIP, CurseForge Support states that the code is limited to seven days. Generate a new code when it expires, or keep the ZIP available for players who join later. Do not include a world save unless you intentionally want to distribute that world.

After importing, ask one player to compare the profile’s mod list and loader version with the server copy before everyone connects. This catches a mismatched file without filling the server log with repeated join failures.
Private profile sharing versus a public CurseForge project
These are different workflows and produce different ZIP layouts.

CurseForge’s current support guidance says vanilla profiles are not supported for project submission, while Forge and Fabric projects are supported. A public project therefore requires more than a working private export: it needs the required manifest, the correct overrides layout, project details, and approval. If your goal is simply to let a few players join your server, use the private profile workflow instead.

Both approaches can run the same modpack. The practical difference is how much of the server administration you perform yourself.

Choose managed installation when you value a guided setup, browser-based logs, and provider-maintained backups. Choose manual control when you need unrestricted access to scripts, Java choices, or unusual loader configurations. In either case, the compatibility checks remain your responsibility.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The server crashes during launch
- Compare the Minecraft version and loader version with the client profile.
- Remove client-only visual or interface mods.
- Read the first named missing dependency in the crash report and install the compatible library version.
- Check that the host is running the Java version expected by the pack.
- Confirm that every mod JAR is in
modsand that no ZIP or nested folder is being treated as a mod.
Change one category at a time and restart. Removing several unrelated mods at once makes it difficult to identify the cause and can leave players with a different pack.
The server starts, but players cannot join
Compare the client and server file by file. Check the loader build, each mod version, libraries, and the config directory. A player with an extra client-side gameplay mod or an older dependency can receive a rejection even though the server console looks normal.
No mods folder exists
Run the correct loader installer or server JAR once in the server directory. The loader creates its expected folders; then stop the server and upload the compatible mods. Creating an empty folder by hand does not install the loader.
You are trying to use Paper
Paper’s plugin system is separate from Forge and Fabric mod loading. Forge and Fabric mods do not run as Paper plugins. Select a server implementation that matches the loader used by the pack instead of copying mod JARs into a Paper plugins directory.
The host’s installer offers a similar but not identical pack
Do not accept a near match simply because the pack name is familiar. Check the Minecraft version, loader family, loader version, Java support, and pack revision. If any required value is unavailable, use the manual server-pack upload route or choose a host that supports the exact target.
The server keeps reverting configuration
Stop the server before replacing config or scripts. Some panels regenerate files at startup, and some launchers apply a template after an update. Save a backup, upload the intended files, and inspect the startup log to see whether a managed installer is overwriting them.
A repeatable update procedure
Modpack updates are safer when treated as a controlled migration rather than a fresh upload.

- Update the client profile and test it in a disposable world.
- Record the new Minecraft, loader, Java, mod, and configuration versions.
- Build a new server pack and remove any newly introduced client-only mods.
- Stop the server, upload the new pack, and keep the previous files until the new start succeeds.
- Read the startup log for dependency, registry, or configuration errors.
- Have one test player connect before distributing the updated profile to everyone.
Never update the server first and ask players to guess which client files changed. Export the client profile from the tested build so the server and player instructions refer to the same version.
Final pre-launch checklist
- Minecraft version is recorded and identical everywhere.
- Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge is the intended loader family.
- Loader version and Java version are supported by the server and host.
- The server software has been installed and started once.
- The EULA and first-start prompts have been completed.

Once these checks pass, start the server, wait for a clean loader completion message, and connect with the exported client profile. When a problem appears, compare versions and files before changing hardware, ports, or unrelated settings; most modpack upload failures are compatibility or packaging errors rather than network faults.
