How to Upload Images With the Next.js App Router

Use a Server Action for small App Router image uploads, a Route Handler for an explicit API, or direct-to-storage uploads for larger files. Validate and authorize every upload server-side.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a small image, the simplest Next.js App Router workflow is a form whose action calls a Server Action. Read the file from FormData, authenticate and authorize the request, validate the upload on the server, and store it in durable storage. Use a POST Route Handler when you need a conventional HTTP endpoint; for larger uploads, consider sending the file directly from the browser to storage.

Upload a small image with a Server Action

In an App Router page, give the file input a name and bind the form to an async Server Function. The browser’s accept attribute helps users choose a supported format, but it is only a picker hint—not a security check.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

// app/upload/page.tsx
import { saveImage } from './actions'

export default function UploadPage() {
  return (
    <form action={saveImage}>
      <label htmlFor="image">Choose an image</label>
      <input
        id="image"
        name="image"
        type="file"
        accept="image/*"
        required
      />
      <button type="submit">Upload</button>
    </form>
  )
}

The action receives a FormData object. The following is a server-side outline: replace the application-specific authentication, size constant and storage function with implementations for your app. Next.js documents form actions and form data handling in its forms guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
// app/upload/actions.ts
'use server'

import { revalidatePath } from 'next/cache'

export async function saveImage(formData: FormData) {
  const user = await requireAuthenticatedUser()
  const value = formData.get('image')

  if (!(value instanceof File) || value.size === 0) {
    return { error: 'Choose an image to upload.' }
  }

  if (!['image/jpeg', 'image/png', 'image/webp'].includes(value.type)) {
    return { error: 'Upload a JPEG, PNG, or WebP image.' }
  }

  if (value.size > MAX_IMAGE_BYTES) {
    return { error: 'The image is too large.' }
  }

  // Confirm this user may write to this destination. Generate a safe object
  // key, store the file in durable storage, and persist its URL or key.
  await storeImageForUser({ userId: user.id, file: value })
  revalidatePath('/images')
}

This example checks the file’s reported MIME type and size, but neither the browser’s filename nor its MIME type proves the actual content. Depending on your threat model, inspect file signatures, transform or scan uploads, set per-user quotas, and apply an explicit maximum size. Those are application responsibilities, not automatic Next.js protections.

Use a Route Handler for an explicit upload endpoint

A Route Handler is a better fit when clients need a separately addressable HTTP endpoint or you want to control the response status and payload. In the App Router, a POST handler can parse a multipart form with await request.formData().

// app/api/upload/route.ts
export async function POST(request: Request) {
  const user = await requireAuthenticatedUser()
  const formData = await request.formData()
  const image = formData.get('image')

  if (!(image instanceof File) || image.size === 0) {
    return Response.json({ error: 'Image required' }, { status: 400 })
  }

  if (!['image/jpeg', 'image/png', 'image/webp'].includes(image.type)) {
    return Response.json({ error: 'Unsupported image type' }, { status: 415 })
  }

  if (image.size > MAX_IMAGE_BYTES) {
    return Response.json({ error: 'Image too large' }, { status: 413 })
  }

  // Authorize this destination, persist to durable storage, and save metadata.
  await storeImageForUser({ userId: user.id, file: image })
  return Response.json({ ok: true }, { status: 201 })
}

See the Next.js Route Handler reference for the route convention and request/response APIs. This snippet assumes requireAuthenticatedUser, MAX_IMAGE_BYTES and storeImageForUser are implemented by your application.

Approach Best fit Where the bytes go
Server Action A form submission that updates the app’s page or data. Through the Server Action request to your server, then to storage.
Route Handler A public HTTP API with explicit request and response behavior. Through the route request to your server, then to storage.
Direct-to-storage upload Larger files or a flow intended to reduce upload bytes passing through the app server. From the browser to storage after a server authorizes the upload.

Both Server Actions and Route Handlers are callable server endpoints. Check authentication and authorization inside the action or handler; hiding the form in the interface does not protect the endpoint. Next.js explains these security responsibilities in its data security guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for request-size limits

Next.js documents a default Server Action request-body limit of 1 MB in its 2026 configuration reference. That limit applies to the raw multipart body, which includes boundaries, part headers and field metadata—not just the file’s bytes. The reference suggests allowing roughly 10–20 KB for multipart overhead when configuring a cap near your intended file limit.

You can set the Server Action body cap in next.config.js:

// next.config.js
module.exports = {
  experimental: {
    serverActions: {
      bodySizeLimit: '2mb',
    },
  },
}

Use the configuration shape appropriate to your Next.js version and project setup; the current reference is Server Actions configuration. Raising this value changes the framework’s cap only. A hosting provider, proxy, runtime or storage service may impose a lower limit, so check the full deployed request path before setting an accepted file size.

When to use direct browser uploads

For Vercel Blob specifically, its client-upload guide, updated September 15, 2026, recommends client uploads when files are larger than 4.5 MB. This is guidance for that Vercel Blob flow, not a universal Next.js limit. The browser obtains an upload token from your server and then sends the file directly to Blob.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Authenticate the user and confirm they may upload to the target account or record.
  2. In the token-generation callback, constrain allowed content types and the upload scope. Vercel warns that leaving authentication out of this callback can let anyone upload to the Blob store.
  3. Have the browser upload the file using the provider’s client flow.
  4. Associate the resulting object with the authenticated user or record, and persist its URL or object key and ownership metadata in your database.

For general guidance on reducing request size and choosing a backend storage flow, see the Next.js backend-for-frontend guide. A successful form parse is not the same as durable storage: some serverless environments do not support filesystem writes, and local files may not persist across requests or deployments.

Make storage and authorization part of the design

  • Authorize every write. Check the user’s permission for the specific destination, not just whether they are signed in.
  • Validate on the server. Require a real, non-empty file; enforce a byte limit and allowed content. Treat client-provided MIME type as one signal, not proof of file contents.
  • Use safe object keys. Generate storage names rather than trusting client filenames. Decide whether to scan, transform or strip metadata for your use case.
  • Persist ownership and reference data. Save the storage URL or key alongside the owning user or record in your database.
  • Keep failures useful and safe. Return clear errors for invalid type, size or authorization, but do not expose credentials, stack traces or sensitive internal details.

These checks apply whether you use a Server Action, Route Handler or direct upload. Next.js treats input validation and authorization as core safeguards for sensitive server operations; see its security guidance.

Troubleshoot common upload failures

  • Request body is too large: The multipart request exceeded the Server Action cap or a hosting/proxy limit. Reduce the image size, adjust serverActions.bodySizeLimit where appropriate, and verify deployment limits. For Vercel Blob uploads above its documented 4.5 MB threshold, use its client-upload flow.
  • The action receives no file: Confirm the input has name="image", the form submits to the intended action, and the server reads formData.get('image') using that exact name.
  • The server rejects a file the picker accepted: The accept attribute only guides the file chooser. Check the server’s accepted types and size policy, and remember that MIME metadata is not proof of file contents.
  • Upload works locally but not after deployment: Check the platform’s body-size and runtime limits and whether it supports persistent local filesystem writes. Use durable object storage rather than assuming a local file survives.
  • Unexpected users can upload: Enforce authentication and destination-level authorization within every action, route or token callback. UI visibility is not access control.
  • The endpoint returns an error after parsing succeeds: Parsing only extracts the request data. Check storage permissions, generated object keys, provider limits and database persistence separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload several images in one App Router form?

Yes. Give the file input the multiple attribute and read all entries with formData.getAll('images'); validate and authorize each file on the server.

Does raising the Server Action body-size limit make uploads persistent?

No. It changes the framework request cap, not where or how long uploaded files are stored. Persist files in durable storage and save their references in your application.
