To upload files to a hosted Minecraft server, obtain the FTP or SFTP connection details from the server host’s control panel, connect with FileZilla Client, open the correct remote directory, and drag the files from your computer into it. Use the exact protocol and port shown by the host: the Minecraft gameplay port is not the file-transfer port.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Stop the server or create a current backup before replacing a live world, configuration, mod set, or plugin. After uploading plugins or other files that are read only during startup, restart the server from its panel and watch the console for errors.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) provide file access to a server from a desktop client. A hosting panel normally supplies the address, transfer username, password or private-key method, protocol, and port. These credentials come from the hosting account, not from the Minecraft game client or your in-game account.
- A Minecraft server with FTP or SFTP access enabled by its host.
- The host, username, password or key, protocol, and port displayed in the control panel.
- FileZilla Client or another compatible FTP/SFTP client. Install the Client edition, not FileZilla Server.
- A local copy of the world, plugin, mod, configuration, or other files you intend to transfer.
- A backup or a maintenance window if the transfer will replace files that the running server is using.
FTP and SFTP: which connection should you use?
Choose SFTP whenever the host offers it. SFTP runs through SSH and is commonly assigned a provider-specific port. Plain FTP commonly uses port 21, but that number is only a general convention; the value in your panel takes precedence. Never substitute the Minecraft gameplay port for either transfer port.
#1 Best Overall
| Connection | What to enter | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| SFTP | Protocol set to SFTP, the panel’s host, SFTP username, authentication method, and the panel’s SFTP port | Uses SSH and may use a nonstandard port; do not force port 21 |
| FTP | Protocol set to FTP, the panel’s FTP host, FTP username, password, and FTP port | Port 21 is common, but your provider may assign another value |
Some panels show separate FTP and SFTP accounts. An account that works for the web dashboard may not be the same account accepted by the file-transfer service, so copy the transfer-specific username exactly.
Step 1: stop the server or make a backup
Uploading over a running server can leave a world or configuration in an inconsistent state, particularly when you replace files that Minecraft has open. Use the panel’s Stop, Restart, backup, or snapshot controls according to the host’s instructions. At minimum, create a recent backup before deleting or overwriting a world, server.properties, a mod set, or a group of plugins.
For a simple upload of a new, unused file, a running server may be acceptable, but the file will not necessarily be loaded until the relevant software is restarted. Treat replacement operations as maintenance work and stop the server first.
Step 2: copy the connection details from your panel
Sign in to the Minecraft hosting control panel and look for a page or card labelled FTP File Access, SFTP Details, Connect to SFTP, or similar. Record every field before opening FileZilla.
| Field | Meaning | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Host or address | The DNS name or IP address of the transfer service | Entering the Minecraft gameplay address when the panel supplies a separate transfer host |
| Protocol | FTP or SFTP, as specified by the provider | Selecting FTP when the account is SFTP-only |
| Port | The listening port for the selected transfer protocol | Assuming port 21 or the game port instead of using the panel value |
| Username | The FTP/SFTP account name | Using the panel login or Minecraft username when a separate transfer username is shown |
| Password or key | The password, private key, or other authentication method required by the host | Copying an old password after the host has reset the transfer account |
If the panel offers a password reset or a button to reveal connection information, use that control rather than guessing. Keep credentials private and do not paste them into screenshots, chat, or public configuration files.
Step 3: install and open FileZilla Client
Install the free FileZilla Client from its official distribution channel. The Client provides a local file pane and a remote-server pane; FileZilla Server is a different product and is not needed to connect to a hosted Minecraft instance.

You can make a one-time connection with Quickconnect, or save the details in Site Manager if you administer the server regularly. Site Manager is preferable for repeat work because it stores the protocol and port together with the host, reducing accidental connections to the wrong service. Protect any saved password with the operating system’s account security.
Step 4: create the connection
Using Quickconnect
- Open FileZilla Client.
- Enter the panel’s host in the Host field.
- Enter the transfer username and password, if the host uses password authentication.
- Enter the exact transfer port shown by the panel.
- For SFTP, select or enter the SFTP protocol as required by the client. For FTP, select FTP and use the host’s requested encryption mode.
- Choose Quickconnect.
Using Site Manager
- Open File > Site Manager and create a new site.
- Set the protocol to the host’s stated protocol, then enter the host and port.
- Choose the host’s login type, such as normal password authentication or key-based authentication.
- Enter the transfer username and save the site.
- Select Connect to begin the session.
Do not change a provider-supplied SFTP port to 21 merely because 21 is familiar. Likewise, changing an FTP connection to SFTP without an SFTP account will produce an authentication or protocol error.
Step 5: verify the first-connection security prompt
On a first SFTP connection, FileZilla may show a host-key prompt. FTP connections using encryption can also present a certificate prompt. Read the hostname and identity information and compare it with the provider’s panel or documentation. Accept and save the identity only when it corresponds to the server you intended to reach.
If the hostname is unfamiliar, the key has unexpectedly changed, or the certificate does not match the provider, cancel the connection and contact the host. Do not select Always trust simply to make the warning disappear; an unexpected identity can indicate a configuration error or a man-in-the-middle risk.

Step 6: identify the correct remote directory
After a successful connection, FileZilla shows your computer in the local pane and the server in the remote pane. The remote pane may open at the server’s root directory, a home directory, or a provider-specific jail. Locate the directory that contains the existing Minecraft files before uploading anything.
| Content | Typical remote location | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| World | /world |
The actual level name can differ; confirm which world is assigned in the server configuration |
| Plugins | /plugins |
Place compatible plugin JAR files here; supporting folders may be created on first startup |
| Mods | /mods |
Use the directory expected by the server software and ensure the client/server mod versions match |
| Server configuration | The main server directory, including server.properties |
Do not place configuration files inside a world, plugin, or mod directory |
These names are common rather than universal. Server software, managed panels, and host layouts can use different folder names or place the instance below another directory. If an existing installation already contains world, plugins, or mods, use that structure instead of creating a second directory with a similar name.
Step 7: upload files with FileZilla
- In the remote pane, open the destination directory, such as
/plugins,/mods, or the directory containing the current world. - In the local pane, browse to the files or folder on your computer.
- Select the item or items to transfer. You can select multiple files with the operating system’s normal selection keys.
- Drag the selection from the local pane to the remote pane, or right-click and choose Upload.
- Leave FileZilla open while the transfer runs. Large worlds and modpacks can contain many files and may take substantially longer than a single JAR.
- Inspect the transfer queue after the operation. Confirm that items appear under successful transfers and investigate anything listed as failed, skipped, or queued.
When replacing an existing file, FileZilla may ask whether to overwrite, resume, rename, or skip it. Choose overwrite only when the local file is the intended replacement and you have a recoverable backup. A partial or failed transfer is not a valid replacement, even if the filename appears in the remote pane.
Uploading a complete world safely
Prepare the local world
Stop the server and make a backup. If the world is stored inside a larger export folder, identify the directory that directly contains files such as level.dat and the world’s region data. Uploading an extra outer folder can produce a path such as /world/MyWorld/level.dat when the server expects /world/level.dat.

Back up or rename the existing world directory before replacing it. Then upload the prepared world directory to the server’s main directory, using the name expected by the server configuration. If the server is configured to use a different level name, either preserve that name or update the corresponding setting only while the server is stopped.

Start and validate
Start the server from the panel and watch the startup log. Join only after the server reports that it has finished loading. Check the spawn area, inventories, dimensions, and important builds. If the old world appears, verify the destination path and configured level name before uploading again.
Uploading plugins and mods
Plugins
Upload plugin JAR files to /plugins on a server platform that supports plugins. A plugin normally is not enabled merely because the upload completed; restart the server so it can discover and load the file. Check the startup log for dependency, version, permission, or Java errors.
Recommended Free Tools
Mods
Upload mod files to /mods when that is the directory used by your mod-loader installation. Server and client requirements vary by loader and mod, so verify compatibility before restarting. A modpack may include configuration files and libraries in addition to JAR files; preserve its directory structure rather than placing every file in the top-level server directory.
Why FTP/SFTP is better than a panel upload for large folders
Web file managers are convenient for a few small files, but some cannot upload directories at all and some impose browser-upload size or timeout limits. For a folder that the panel rejects, compress the folder into an archive if the host’s file manager supports archive extraction, or switch to FTP/SFTP. Direct transfer is generally the practical route for large worlds and modpacks because it can send a directory tree without relying on a single browser request.
If you compress a directory, preserve the folder hierarchy inside the archive and extract it on the server only after confirming the host’s available disk space and extraction controls. Delete an obsolete archive after extraction if storage is limited, but keep an independent backup elsewhere.

Restarting and checking the result
- Confirm the transfer queue contains no failed or skipped items.
- Check that the uploaded files are in the intended remote directory and have plausible file sizes.
- Use the panel’s stop/start or restart control, following its normal shutdown process.
- Wait for the server to finish loading before connecting in Minecraft.
- Review the console for missing dependencies, malformed configuration, unsupported versions, or permission errors.
- Test the specific change: enter the uploaded world, confirm the plugin command or feature, or verify that the mod loads.
FTP and SFTP troubleshooting
“Authentication failed” or “Login incorrect”
- Re-copy the host, transfer username, and password from the panel.
- Check that FileZilla is using the correct protocol and port.
- Verify whether the host supplies separate FTP and SFTP usernames.
- Reset the transfer password in the panel if it may have expired or been changed.
- For key-based SFTP, confirm that FileZilla is using the correct private key and that the key is readable by your operating system account.
“Connection timed out” or “Could not connect”
- Confirm the transfer host and port exactly as displayed by the provider.
- Do not enter the Minecraft gameplay port; it is separate from FTP/SFTP.
- Check whether the server is suspended, the transfer service is disabled, or your network blocks the selected port.
- Try again after confirming the protocol. An SFTP service will not respond correctly to an FTP connection and vice versa.
An unknown host key or certificate appears
Stop and verify the hostname against the panel. Accept the identity only when it matches the expected provider and server. If a previously trusted key changes unexpectedly, ask the host to confirm the change instead of automatically accepting it.
The upload says complete, but Minecraft does not change
- Open the remote directory and confirm that the file is where the server software expects it.
- Check the queue for failed, skipped, or incomplete transfers.
- Look for an accidental extra directory level, such as
/world/WorldName/level.datinstead of/world/level.dat. - Restart the server when uploading a plugin, mod, world, or configuration that is read at startup.
- Read the startup log for version incompatibility, missing dependencies, or a configuration error.
The panel will not accept a folder
Compress the folder and use the panel’s extraction function if available, or connect through FTP/SFTP and upload the directory tree directly. Browser file managers commonly handle individual files more reliably than entire folders.
How to evaluate a host’s file-transfer setup
If you are choosing or changing a Minecraft host, file-transfer support matters as much as the game server controls. Compare these practical features before committing to a provider:
- SFTP availability: SFTP is preferable when offered, especially for regular administration.
- Credential management: Check where transfer credentials are displayed, whether FTP and SFTP accounts are separate, and how a lost password or key is reset.
- Port and protocol clarity: The panel should clearly identify the transfer host, protocol, and port rather than making you infer them from the game connection.
- Web file-manager limits: Look for documented folder, file-size, timeout, and archive-extraction limits.
- Backup controls: Verify whether the panel can create and restore backups before you replace a world or configuration.
- Large-transfer support: A stable FTP/SFTP service is important for large worlds, modpacks, and repeated uploads.
- Panel usability and support: Clear logs, restart controls, and support documentation reduce recovery time when a transfer fails.
Practical security rules
- Use SFTP when available and keep the client updated.
- Never publish your transfer password, private key, or full connection details.
- Save credentials only on a computer you control, protected by an account password and device encryption where available.
- Review the remote path before overwriting or deleting anything.
- Keep an offline or separate backup before replacing a live world.
- Remove temporary archives and old credentials when a transfer is finished.
With the panel’s exact connection details, FileZilla’s local and remote panes make the operation straightforward: connect, open the correct destination, upload, verify the queue, and restart when the server software requires it.
