Use the transfer controls built into your remote-desktop web client. In Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services and Azure Virtual Desktop web clients, upload local files with the client’s Upload button, then open Remote Desktop Virtual Drive > Uploads inside the remote session. To bring a file back, copy it into Remote Desktop Virtual Drive > Downloads and approve the browser download prompt. These instructions do not automatically apply to Chrome Remote Desktop or other remote-access products, which use different permissions and controls.
First identify what “remote browser” means
The phrase can describe two different arrangements:
- A browser-based remote-desktop client: your local browser displays a Windows session hosted by Remote Desktop Services or Azure Virtual Desktop. The web client can expose a virtual drive for file transfer.
- A browser running on the remote computer: you are operating Chrome, Edge or another browser inside the remote session. In this case, the remote product—not the browser alone—determines whether files can cross the connection.
The procedure below is documented for Microsoft’s Remote Desktop web clients. You normally need an organization-provided web address, valid credentials, a compatible browser and a supported desktop operating system. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services web-client guide and its Azure Virtual Desktop feature guide describe the workflow. An administrator can disable resources such as file transfer, so the controls may not appear even when your browser is working correctly.
Upload a local file into the remote session
- Open the organization’s Remote Desktop web-client URL in your local browser and sign in.
- Connect to the required desktop or published application.
- If the client asks to access local resources, enable File transfer. In Azure Virtual Desktop, this permission is granted through the resource-access prompt.
- Choose the web client’s Upload control. Select one or more files in your local file picker and confirm.
- Inside the remote Windows session, open File Explorer.
- Browse to Remote Desktop Virtual Drive > Uploads. The transferred files should be listed there.
Azure Virtual Desktop makes uploaded files available in the session until you sign out. Copy them from the virtual drive to a normal remote folder if you need to work with them through an application or preserve them in the remote environment.

If Upload is missing
Check that you connected through the supported web-client URL rather than a native Remote Desktop application, reload the session, and review the local-resource permission prompt. If the prompt was denied, disconnect and reconnect so it can be shown again. If the button and virtual drive are still absent, your administrator may have disabled file transfer or the account may not have access to that feature.
Download a file from the remote session
- In the remote session, open File Explorer.
- Locate the finished file in its remote folder.
- Use Copy (not Cut) and paste the file into Remote Desktop Virtual Drive > Downloads.
- Watch your local browser for the download confirmation or save prompt and approve it.
- Find the result in the browser’s normal download location on your local computer.
Microsoft warns that using Cut can lose a file if a network interruption occurs during transfer. Copy first, verify the local download, and delete the remote original only after you have confirmed the copy.
Azure Virtual Desktop browser-download warning
Do not save a download directly from a browser running inside the remote session into the virtual drive’s Downloads folder. The local browser can begin its own download before the remote browser has finished writing the file. Instead, save the file to another folder in the remote session, wait for that download to complete, and then copy the completed file into Remote Desktop Virtual Drive > Downloads. This sequencing is specifically called out in Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop documentation.

Limits and behavior you should expect
| Item | Documented behavior |
|---|---|
| Transfer size | Microsoft documents a 255 MB limit for downloads through the Remote Desktop web-client virtual-drive workflow. Treat this as specific to that client and verify the current documentation before moving larger files. |
| Clipboard | The web client’s clipboard sharing is for text. It is not a file-transfer method; use Upload and the virtual-drive folders. |
| Upload location | Files uploaded from the local computer appear in Remote Desktop Virtual Drive > Uploads. |
| Download location | Files copied to Remote Desktop Virtual Drive > Downloads are offered to the local browser for saving. |
| Persistence | Azure Virtual Desktop uploads remain available in the remote session until sign-out. Do not assume they persist after the session ends. |
| Administration | Local-resource permissions and administrator policy can remove or restrict the transfer controls. |
Chrome Remote Desktop and other products
Do not substitute Microsoft’s virtual-drive paths into Chrome Remote Desktop. Google’s general Chrome Remote Desktop guide explains how to connect to another computer and access its files and applications, but it does not provide a universal file-upload and download procedure for every Chrome Remote Desktop session.
Google does document file transfer for a narrower scenario: administrator-managed remote support to ChromeOS kiosk devices. The administrator must enable that capability, as described in Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education instructions. That specific workflow does not establish that file transfer is available in ordinary consumer sessions. For another vendor, look for its documentation on local-resource redirection, file transfer, shared folders or drive mapping, and check whether an administrator must approve it.
A safe, repeatable transfer checklist
- Confirm whether you are using a Microsoft web client, Chrome Remote Desktop or another product.
- Use the organization’s official URL and sign in before attempting transfer.
- Grant only the local-resource permission you need; enable File transfer when prompted.
- For uploads, use the client’s Upload control and check the Uploads folder.
- For downloads, copy rather than cut into the Downloads folder.
- For Azure Virtual Desktop browser downloads, finish the remote download in a normal remote folder first.
- Keep files under the documented 255 MB limit unless your product’s current documentation says otherwise.
- Verify the local copy before deleting the remote original.
- Avoid transferring confidential files on an unmanaged computer or public network.
Troubleshooting common failures
No Upload button appears
You may be in a native client, an unsupported web page or a session where the administrator disabled file transfer. Reconnect through the organization-provided web-client URL, check the resource-permission prompt, and ask the administrator whether file transfer is allowed.

The virtual drive is not listed in File Explorer
File transfer permission may have been denied, the session may not have reconnected after permission changes, or policy may block drive redirection. Disconnect and reconnect, allow File transfer, and test again. If the drive remains absent, only the service administrator can change the policy.
Clipboard works, but files do not paste
This is expected in Microsoft’s web client: clipboard support covers text, not files. Use Upload for local-to-remote transfer and the virtual drive’s Downloads folder for remote-to-local transfer.
The download prompt never appears
Check the local browser’s blocked-pop-up and download permissions, then look in its download list. Confirm that the file was copied completely into the virtual drive’s Downloads folder. In Azure Virtual Desktop, make sure the file was first saved to a separate remote folder rather than downloaded directly into the virtual drive.

The file is larger than 255 MB
The documented web-client workflow has a 255 MB download limit. Compressing a file may help only if the resulting archive is within the limit. For larger transfers, ask your administrator which approved storage service or alternate remote-access method is available; do not assume another Microsoft client has identical limits.
Chrome Remote Desktop has no file-transfer control
Microsoft’s procedure does not apply. Confirm whether your session is an administrator-managed ChromeOS kiosk support scenario covered by Google’s documentation. Otherwise, use an approved shared storage location or the transfer feature documented by your organization.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drag a file from my computer into a Microsoft remote session?
Use the web client’s Upload control instead of relying on drag-and-drop; then retrieve the file from Remote Desktop Virtual Drive > Uploads.
Are files uploaded to Azure Virtual Desktop permanent?
Microsoft says they remain available in the session until you sign out. Copy anything you need to retain into an approved remote location.
Does the 255 MB limit apply to every remote-desktop product?
No. It is the limit documented for Microsoft’s Remote Desktop web-client virtual-drive workflow; other products may set different limits.
