To print an STL model, import it into slicer software, set the printer and material, review the sliced preview, then send the generated print file to the printer. An STL is the 3D model—not usually the file the printer executes directly. You can transfer the sliced file by removable media or, if your printer supports it, over a network or cloud service.
What “upload an STL” means
The phrase can describe two different steps. First, you import the STL model into a slicer, which prepares the model for a specific printer and converts it into printer instructions such as G-code or BGCODE. Then you transfer that print-ready output to the printer. The exact output format and transfer options depend on the printer and software.

The steps below use PrusaSlicer 2.9 as a concrete example. Other slicers have similar stages, but their controls and supported features may differ.
Prepare and slice the STL
-
Open your slicer and import the model
In PrusaSlicer 2.9, drag the STL into the application, click Add, or use File > Import. PrusaSlicer also lists STEP, 3MF, OBJ, and AMF as supported formats. Other slicers may use different menu labels or support a different set of formats. PrusaSlicer’s first-print guide documents the import workflow.

Check the printer profile and model placement
Confirm that the selected printer and nozzle profile match the printer you own. Inspect the model on the virtual build plate and adjust its orientation if needed. A model can often be printed in more than one orientation, but the choice affects which areas need support and how the layers are laid down.
-
Select the material and print profile
Choose the material you intend to load and an appropriate print profile. Materials can require different temperatures, speeds, cooling, and other settings, so do not assume one profile suits every filament.

Review support needs and the sliced preview
Overhangs may need support structures. Slice the model, then inspect the layer or toolpath preview before exporting. Look for unexpected gaps, an incorrect orientation, or parts that would start printing without material beneath them. If the preview does not look right, revisit the model placement, support settings, or profile before proceeding.

Transfer the print-ready file
Once the slice is ready, choose a transfer method supported by your printer. Follow the printer’s manual for compatible media, connection requirements, and how to select a file at the machine; those details are not universal.

Removable media: USB drive or SD card
For a compatible offline setup, use the slicer’s removable-media export option to save the sliced file to a detected SD card or USB flash drive. Insert the media into the printer and select the file using the printer’s controls. PrusaSlicer documents removable-media export, while UltiMaker describes downloading a prepared file from Cura Cloud for manual USB transfer to a non-networked printer. Check your printer manual before choosing or formatting media.
Network or cloud transfer
If the printer and software support it, a prepared job can be sent over a network or queued through a cloud service instead of being carried on removable media. The details vary by ecosystem: Prusa distinguishes cloud-accessible Prusa Connect from local-network PrusaLink, while UltiMaker Cura Cloud documents queueing a prepared job to a connected printer as well as downloading a file for manual transfer. These are examples, not features available on every printer.

| Transfer method | Printer support | Internet or network | Manual handling | Queueing or monitoring |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USB flash drive or SD card | Printer must accept the chosen media and file type; check its manual. | No network is required for the documented offline workflow. | Export the file, move the media to the printer, and select the file there. | Not part of the documented removable-media workflow. |
| Local-network sending | Printer and slicer must support the connection; for example, PrusaLink runs on the local network. | Requires a compatible local-network setup; internet access is not inherent to a local connection. | No removable-media handoff when sending directly. | Capabilities depend on the printer and software. |
| Cloud queue or transfer | Requires a compatible printer and service; Cura Cloud documents a connected-printer queue. | Uses the cloud service, so internet access is needed for the cloud workflow. | A connected queue avoids manual transfer; downloading a file for USB still involves handling media. | Queueing is documented for Cura Cloud; monitoring features depend on the service and setup. |
PrusaSlicer is another example of software that supports offline slicing and local-network file sending, subject to compatible printer and setup.

Common problems to check
- The STL opens, but the printer cannot use it: Import and slice the model first, then transfer the generated print file rather than assuming the STL itself is the printer-ready job.
- The print settings seem wrong: Verify the selected printer, nozzle, material, and print profile before slicing.
- Parts look unsupported or misplaced: Recheck orientation, consider whether overhangs need supports, and inspect the sliced preview before export.
- The printer does not show the transferred file: Confirm the media type, file requirements, and file-selection procedure in the printer’s manual. If sending over a network, confirm that the printer and slicer support that method and that the connection is set up.
