What the transfer actually moves
An Enshrouded dedicated server stores the shared world: bases, explored areas, unlocked world content and other world progression. Keen Games states that “The world progression is stored on the dedicated servers.” Uploading that world therefore moves the environment your group plays in.

Character progression is separate. Keen Games also states that “Character progression is stored only on clients.” A world upload does not automatically copy every player’s personal character profile to the server. Each player should join with the same game account and local character data they used before the migration; a friend who joins without that client-side data may appear to have a new or less-progressed character even though the shared base and world are intact.
Before touching any files
Stop the server completely
Use the hosting panel’s stop control or stop the dedicated-server process. Do not replace files while the server is running. An active process can write another save over the files you are uploading, leaving a partial or inconsistent transfer.

Make two independent backups
Copy the entire current server savegame directory to a separate folder before deleting or moving anything. Also copy the local save files you intend to upload. An optional USB flash drive gives you a second physical copy. Keen Games recommends making a copy of all save files before changes to prevent accidental loss.
Keep the backup until you have joined the migrated world, inspected a known base and confirmed that recent progress is present. Server providers warn that replacing the generated save overwrites the server’s existing progress; the backup is your rollback.

- Note whether Steam Cloud is enabled for Enshrouded.
- Write down the date and time of the local files you believe are current.
- Record the server’s configured
saveDirectorybefore uploading. - Confirm that your file manager or SFTP account can upload, rename and move files.
Where Enshrouded keeps local saves
Steam Cloud enabled
Open the Steam userdata directory and replace <SteamUserID> with your numeric Steam account folder:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata<SteamUserID>1203620remote
The app ID 1203620 is the Enshrouded save location documented for local and Steam Cloud data. If Steam is installed in another library location, use that installation’s userdata folder rather than assuming the path above exists exactly.

Check the Windows Saved Games location:
%USERPROFILE%/Saved Games/enshrouded
Entering that variable in File Explorer’s address bar resolves it to your Windows user profile. The slash style shown is accepted conceptually; on Windows, the equivalent displayed path normally uses backslashes.

Choosing the right world when several exist
Do not select a file solely because its name looks familiar. Enshrouded uses static hexadecimal world names and keeps rolling copies for each world. Compare the accompanying metadata and each file’s modified date with the last time you played. The metadata helps distinguish worlds when several hexadecimal files are present.

Other documented static names include 3bd85c7d and additional hexadecimal names. The name is an identifier, not a readable world title, so preserve the complete set belonging to the same save rather than mixing files from different dates or worlds.
Find the server’s real save directory
Official dedicated-server installation
Open enshrouded_server.json and read the value of saveDirectory. Keen Games documents ./savegame as the default. The leading dot means a folder named savegame relative to the server’s working directory, not necessarily a folder beside your local game installation.
Rented or managed host
A host may expose the same directory at the top level of its web file manager or through SFTP. The visible layout differs between providers, so use the panel’s configuration or server-file instructions to verify that you are opening the directory mapped to saveDirectory. A folder with a similar name elsewhere is not sufficient.
Uploading into the wrong directory is the most common reason a server starts a blank world. Confirm the path before moving the generated files.

Know which files to upload
At minimum, identify the main hexadecimal world file. Depending on the source save and host, the world also uses matching companions with suffixes such as _info and _index. An index can select the active rolling copy, so omitting it may make the server choose an older state or fail to recognize the world.
Keep the base name identical across companions. For example, if the host expects 3ad85aea, its related files must use the corresponding 3ad85aea_info and, when present and required by the host, 3ad85aea_index naming. Do not change extensions, add a second extension during download, or combine an index from one world with data from another.
Server saves can range from 1 MB to 100 MB depending on world complexity. The size is therefore a useful sanity check, not proof that a file is correct. Enshrouded’s FAQ says saves are generated every five minutes, so the newest rolling copy may be only a few minutes behind your last session.

- Stop the server. Wait for the panel or process manager to report that it is offline. If a console window remains open, close the server cleanly rather than immediately replacing files.
- Back up the destination. Download or copy the complete server
savegamedirectory. Give the backup a date-based name so you can identify it during rollback. - Back up the source. Copy the selected local world file and every matching metadata or index file to another folder. Do not work from the only copy.
- Open the configured destination. In a self-hosted installation, navigate to the directory specified by
saveDirectoryinenshrouded_server.json. On a rented host, open the mappedsavegamedirectory in the panel or connect with SFTP. - Move the generated save aside. After confirming the backup, move the server’s newly generated world files to a backup subfolder or delete them only if the host requires an empty directory. Moving is safer because it preserves an immediate rollback.
- Upload the local files. Transfer the main world file and the companion files your host expects. Preserve the original byte contents, suffixes and extensions while uploading.
- Apply the expected base name. If your local hexadecimal name differs from the server’s expected default, rename the main file to
3ad85aea. Rename matching companions in the same way, retaining suffixes such as_info. Include the relevant_indexfile when it is present in your save set or required by the host’s instructions. - Check the final listing. Verify spelling, capitalization, extensions and timestamps. The files should be in the configured directory itself, not inside an extra folder created by an archive extraction or drag-and-drop upload.
- Start the server. Allow the process to finish loading before connecting. The first start after a replacement can take longer while the server reads the uploaded world.
- Join and validate. Enter the same world, visit a recognizable base, check that world changes and unlocked areas are present, and compare the in-game state with the most recent local session. Confirm a new server save timestamp is being produced.
Self-hosted server versus rented host
The save content is the same in both arrangements. The difference is how you reach it and how much control you have over configuration and rollback.

If you cannot see enshrouded_server.json on a managed host, do not guess a path. Ask the host which folder is mapped to saveDirectory before replacing the generated save.

What players should expect after migration
The base and world state
These are part of world progression and should appear when the correct world files load. Test with a landmark your group built or a known explored location rather than relying only on the server’s successful startup message.
Individual characters
Character progression remains client-side. A player who changes computers, Windows profiles or local save data may not see the same character even though the server world is correct. The server upload is not a character-profile migration.

Save timing
Because the game generates saves every five minutes, a file copied immediately after a major action may not contain that action. Use modified dates and the rolling copies to select the latest completed save, and allow a normal save interval before shutting down the original session when possible.

The server loads a blank or new world
- Stop the server again.
- Re-open
enshrouded_server.jsonand verify the exactsaveDirectory. - Check that the uploaded files are directly inside that directory, not one level deeper.
- Confirm the hexadecimal base name and companions match the host’s expected name.
- Restore the backup if the original server save was removed, then retry with the corrected path.
The server ignores the uploaded file
- Check for an accidental extension such as
.txtor a duplicate extension added by a file manager. - Compare the exact hexadecimal spelling with the generated server name; rename to
3ad85aeawhen the host expects that default. - Keep matching
_infofiles together and include the relevant_indexfile when your save set contains one. - Ensure the upload completed before restarting; a partially transferred file can be smaller than the source.
Recent progress is missing
Compare modified dates across the rolling copies in the local save location. The active index may point to a different copy than the one you first selected. Use the newest coherent group of files, not the newest single file taken in isolation.
Friends’ characters look reset
Check the client-side character data first. The world transfer carries shared world progression, but Keen Games identifies character progression as client-only. Have the affected player use the same account and local character data used before the move.

The server will not start after replacement
Stop it, restore the backed-up server directory, and confirm that the backup itself starts. If it does, repeat the migration with the source files renamed and arranged exactly as the host requires. Keeping the original backup untouched lets you separate a naming or placement error from a damaged source copy.

Rollback and future maintenance
To roll back, stop the server, move the current savegame directory out of the way, and restore the dated backup directory in its place. Start the server and verify the known base before allowing players to continue. Keep a fresh backup before every future save replacement or major server change.
For a long-running server, retain more than one dated backup because saves are written repeatedly and a problem may not be noticed immediately. A local copy plus an offline USB copy protects against both an incorrect upload and accidental deletion in the hosting panel.

These values describe the documented defaults. A host can expose a different folder or require a different filename arrangement, so the configured saveDirectory and the host’s file instructions take precedence over assumptions based on another installation.
